Not all counties still have all their records (some lost in civil war and/or due to fires). Some marriages between NA and Indian Countrymen may not have been formally recorded. 1750 though is really early...but not impossible. Most of the discussion in the books I've mentioned seem to revolve around the period post revolution-1820...but there were "long hunters" before that and other early fur trappers/traders. Have you contacted the Chatham County Historical Assn? They may be able to point you to relevant sources for further research/possibly some early history documents not found in many libraries. Anyway, I do wish you luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have though run across your family's names and tried to connect the dots to the Virginia and Georgia Griffins of my line before but have not yet been able to figure out how they are all connected. I will keep an eye out though. I've read Looney Hicks Griffin's WPA interview and such. Hopefully we will all figure this out eventually. I would hope more folks would join the Griffin Surname project...that would help alot. So far only about 30% have joined and done their testing (per the survey respondents). This of course though is a personal decision. Still, it may offer us all more clues on how we are all connected. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jantrevor Surnames: Griffin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6802.2.1.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: How, cool. I'm so glad you posted. It's nice to speak to a descendant....who's ancestors I have seen in all my research. I have had trouble getting in touch with many Native American Griffin ancestors who are still on the Rolls. (Have sent some info into the Cherokee genealogy folks) As to DNA, I have done a variety of DNA testing. (9 tests in all...it becomes addicting) On our Griffin Y-line, we matched 25 markers via Y-Search to a Robert Griffin who stated he currently identified as a tribal member, but he would release no further information to us. We also matched to a Griffin family in Arkansas who also had an oral history of being Cherokee and referred to themselves as Black Irish. I have also done autosomal testing and admixture testing with different companies to cross-check their results. Although autosomal and admixture testing are not line-specific (they look at everything you inherited from both parents rather than just fathers or mother's line) mine did shown NA ancestry. One company estimated mine as 1/8th (DNA Tribes) another in percentages ranging from 4-12% (AncestrybyDNA). This DNA could however be from other NA ancestors as I have tracked down 5 NA Grandmothers in different lines (1 being Griffin). The other group I have not been able to research fully are the African American Griffin lines. I grew up meeting African American Griffins in Houston...but have yet to be able to chat with any southern lines about their ancestry. (Would love to). Although some African American Griffins may have acquired their Griffin surname by taking their master's name after slavery (less common than once thought), some lines may be descendants of Griffin male/slave interractions during slavery or could also be African American women who married either white Griffin males or Native American Griffin lines either during colonial period, during slavery or after. Cherokees and Indian Countrymen in particular held slaves very early in ALA and many took slaves to OK/Ark at removal. Once freed, they became known as Cherokee Freedmen. I would love to learn more about the descendants of any of the Cherokee "Freedmen" Griffins as well. I have spoken with a northern line of African American Griffins, who descended from one Samuel Griffin that they believed traced back to an interaction of a Free Person of Color with a white indentured Griffin servant during the Colonial period. During that period, because rights for Free Persons of Color ! were more limited than for freed servants, the children were sometimes given their mother's surname. In any event, Griffin history is very complicated ...but rich and varied. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: TheresaGriffin55 Surnames: Griffin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6802.2.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just a note: If you are a GRIFFIN male, Y-DNA testing will NOT show Native American DNA there was an adoption or name change. If you do have Native American bloodlines due to intermarriage between a GRIFFIN woman and a Native American male, you need to use the Family Finder Test offered by FTDNA.com. Y-DNA only traces the Y DNA strand passed from father to son, it will not pick up anything from mother to son. Again, if there was an adoption or if a GRIFFIN woman married a Native American man and kept her married name (and so the children were also GRIFFINS) then the male Griffin can show Native American DNA. We do have a rate with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) for anyone named Griffin. If you need help getting a test, you can either go to our Surname site (it's worth going to anyway, you may find relatives there) or contact me for help. http://www.griffith.dna.rdgriffith.com/ Theresa Griffin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I do have my Indian card and am listed as 1/8 Indian. I have not gotten my brother to DNA test yet, but with a full blooded German mother it killed alot of my Indian. I am proud of my Griffin Indian heritage and would love to know how the first of my line that I can trace to came to be in the world. I can only go back to John Griffin who we think was born in Tennessee in 1763. He did marry a Cherokee, but we don't know how much of if he had any Indian in him. Author: jantrevor Surnames: Griffin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6802.2.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Agreed, most Griffin direct Y paternal lines do appear to (in many cases) trace back to either Ireland (Griffin) or (Griffith) Wales for the most part. However, some Griffin men married Native American women during the Colonial period. For those families, signs of that Native American ancestry can still be present. And in some cases during removal, these male Griffin men who were married to NA women, chose to be removed to stay with their families. You can see these families identified on removal records as mixed families. Those Griffin lines and their descendants in Oklahoma and some in Arkansas still identify as NA, whereas others no longer identifed as NA after removal. My commentary is in response more to my original data posted rather than to a specific family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jantrevor Surnames: Griffin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6802.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, thanks for posting about your family. This is good information and helpful for others on your line. So far, (of 33 total respondents) the survey is averaging between 28-33% of Griffin families reporting an oral and/or documented history of Native American ancestry within the Griffin line. (Most report Cherokee, then Creek or Choctaw). And yet, of all the respondents, 90% of Griffin families so far would currently characterize their family as White. This in part answers the question I had as a child "Where did all the Indians go?" It would appear, for some of us, we are their descendants...albeit having lost almost all knowledge of this heritage. Also note, based on Indian Removal records, of the Griffin/en/ith families who were actually removed and were recorded on the rolls, the tribal breakdown based on their reported ancestry is 47.6% Cherokee, 52.4% Choctaw. So...so far, the Choctaw is underrepresented in the survey results if those that were not removed were generally similar in population to those that were. In any event, all this is significant from a genealogical perspective in that it indicates that after the end of the Colonial period (the period of time where some of our Griffin relatives were living/in among Indian territories that these families may have changed how they where characterized on census or goverment records. Considering the consequences for persons of Native American or mixed ancestry during the Indian Removal period, one cannot blame them. It is during this period that some families began characterizing themselves as "Black Irish", "Black Dutch", and possibly "Melungeon" or "Portuguese" (pron. then as "Portygee") (see wikipedia for more information) as a way to dismiss some Native American features, poss. darker skin or Asian looking eyes for some members of a family. It is important to note that within the same family, there might have been darker, almost Mediterranean looking members and others fair and auburn haired. This is still playing out in my family today. My son, 7 generations removed had decidedly asian looking eyes...and yet is very fair skinned. Other relatives are very olive complected with thick dark hair. So, prior to say 1850, some of these families may have been characterized as Indian, possibly even Mulatto as during that period Mulatto could mean a mixture of any type. For those families who have been stuck during the colonial time period without being able to find the next generation back, they may want to begin looking for their ancestors on other documents which are not exclusive to Whites for the same time period (ie. Census records for Free Persons of Color, Indian Removal Records, etc.) For southern lines, this is particularly consistent with the history of the regions they were in (very early NC, GA, Alabama, TN) but this is not to say that similar patterns weren't playing out on Northern Migration routes, I'm just not as familiar with them. To learn more about the "Indian Countrymen" or "Metis" by the French as they were called during this time period...several books are recommended: Creek Country: The Creek Indians and Their World by Robbie Franklyn Ethridge Mixed Blood Indians: Racial Construction in the Early South (Mercer University Lamar Memorial Lectures) by Theda Perdue (Paperback - Mar. 28, 2005) A Conquering Spirit: Fort Mims and the Redstick War of 1813-1814 (Fire Ant Books) by Gregory A. Waselkov (Paperback - Sept. 28, 2009) Researchers can also search Google Books for "Indian Countrymen" and "Metis" for various early documents from the period. For me, since posting the survey and my family tree and their story, I was contacted by another researcher on my family line and she was able to produce a photo of one of her "Indian Griffins" which I compared with mine...both having descended from the same family (Benjamin Griffin Mary Polly Bird). Both have decidedly Indian features and would have been photographed between 1860-1880. So, I am hopeful that posting all this information will lead to contacts on other lines to help people get just a few more small clues. If you're a Griffin and would like to take the survey, but have not yet done so, please visit this link: http://www.visualmediaworx.com/gone to texas.htm Thanks to all for their responses and happy searching Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
