Author: 55VONDA Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/6393/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking for relative of my grandfather George griffin who lived in Elizabeth city ,north carolina until his death. He was married to Carrie Griffin (I never knew her maiden name). He passed before she did. George had three sons by a woman named Dorothy Boatwright--I later learned that there was a discrepancy about her last name. The sons were named --David,James, and Mckinley. My father was James Griffin, who married my mother(Blanche Griffin)in April 1948.I recently learned that there may be two other offspring of James Griffin besides the six that he had with my mother. Any information would be greatley appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Emma's brother Benjamin Stephens seemed to relocate to Cardiff Wales and her other siblings were around Weston Herefordshire and East Dean in Gloucester but I cannot locate Emma and her children in any census. 1. [GRIFFIN] THE SEARCH FOR AARON AND AMBROSE FLOYD'S PARENTS
    2. Vircher B Floyd
    3. Dear Friends: I am searching for the parents of Aaron ( 1820 - 1879) and Ambrose Floyd, his brother. Aaron and his wife Fannie, my great grandparents, lived in Lancaster, Garrard Co.,KY. at some point in their lives. Ambrose, was 4 years older, I believe. He was married to America Overstreet. For background I can repeat what our great aunt, Sophie Owens, told us. She said that a Mr. _____Griffin (or Griffith) and his family had on their farm a Native American lady named Clarissa. Mr._____Griffin slept with her and they had a pretty child named Fannie. When Fannie came of age (12+ ?), Mr. Griffin gave her hand to an African American (we think) man named Wallace Cowan. Wallace and Fannie had a child named Alice but Mr. Griffin was unhappy with the way Wallace treated Fannie so he sent Wallace away or 'sold him' away. Aaron Floyd asked for and received permission from Mr. Griffin to marry Fannie. Whereas Wallace's marriage seemed to have been con sensual, Aaron and Fannie made proper marriage arrangements (in Boyle or Mercer ?) which were confirmed in Garrard County 8 years after the vowels were taken. In the meantime, Wallace, whose last name could have been changed to Cowan after he became a barber, worked and saved enough money to buy his freedom,,,,,or was given his freedom by a Cowan family. We believe that it was Elizabeth Cowan who freed Wallace while he probably took the Cowan name in gratitude. Fannie and Aaron kept Alice to raise and had two children of their own; Nanny and John (my grandfather, born 1860 and died 1960 ) who I knew and conversed with in Lancaster, Garrard County, KY. Regretably, I was too young to think about genealogy in those days. I know you have heard that before. Now, at 80 year of age, I want to "get acquainted" with my predecessors to learn what contributions they may have made to the growth and development of our Country, America. I want to share what I learn with my grandchildren, Brianna and Bethanie. Who knows,.. maybe other men in the family helped re-build the Capital in Washington, D.C. My grandfather "Papa John," my Uncle James and my father, Vircher, were all proud and good carpenters. My Uncle Commodore was a butcher and brick layer, I believe. My great grandmother's name was America Overstreet. I can not quiet my imagination. I want to know who my great, great grandparents were and what they might have contributed to my family's zest and drive to overcome hardships. I have found reference to some of my predecessors in Boyle, Garrard, Mercer, Lincoln, even Clay County. With "AMERICA" a part of our family, what might my great, great grandparents have done to make our family what it is and for this Country to make it what it is today,..and is still becoming ? Thanks for making it possible to 'check out" various combinations and facts I may dig up as I go. I have been at it for at least 6 - 8 years and hope to finish now in less than a year.
