The only information that I have at this time is that he married Claryssa Hays 21 Jul 1823, in St. Francois Co., Mo. Together they had 1 daughter, Tabitha Ann Griffin, in 1824. Sometime between 1824 and 1826 Solomon Griffin died. Claryssa and Tabitha were granted his land in Austin's Colony in Texas, according to the General Land Office Records in Texas. Tabitha married my ggggrandfather, Abraham Baker Sr. (Claryssa had remarried after Solomon's death, she married John Andrews Jr., together they had several children, and raised Tabitha.) I've "rescued" an old photograph of Amanda PAINTER which was taken at the Tracy Studio in Pana, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Amanda appearing to be in her 40's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Amanda and her family: Amanda Mary ESKRIDGE b. April 1842 in DE to parents Oakley Thomas ESKRIDGE (b. 12 Jul 1807 in Laurel, DE) and Mary Elizabeth GRIFFIN (b. 20 May 1817). Amanda married Henry PAINTER (b. Mar 1845 in IN) in 1870 and it appears that the couple had no children. Census records provide the following information: 1880 census of Effingham, IL: H. C. PAINTER, age 35, a Printer, born IN, parents born VA Amanda PAINTER, wife, age 37, Keeping House, born DE, parents born DE/MD Elizabeth PAINTER, Mother, age 78, at Home, born VA, parents birthplace unknown 1900 census of Pana, IL: Henry C. PAINTER, age 55, born Mar 1845, married 30 years, born IN, parents born VA, an Iron Salesman Amanda PAINTER, wife, age 58, born Apr 1842, married 30 years, no children, born DE, parents born DE/MD Mary E. ESKRIDGE, mother-in-law, age 83, a widow, born May 1817, 11 children/2 living, born MD, parents born DE 1910 census of Pana, IL: Henry C. PAINTER, age 64, married 42 years, born IN, parents born VA, a Traveling Salesman Amanda PAINTER, wife, age 64, married 42 years, born DE, parents born DE + a servant I am hoping to locate someone from Amanda's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. He had four children under the age of 10 in the 1840 Henderson County census. I think one child was William and another Rachel. He died before 1850. Does anyone know who his wife was or who raised their children? A John A. Griffin married Mary Hazelwood in 1836 in Henderson County but I don't think this is the same person. Mary Hazelwood married Alfred C. Norment in 1845 after the death of her first husband but she does not have any Griffin children living with her in the 1850 Henderson County census so she may not have had children with John A Griffin. Joseph's son Daniel's mother-in-law, Phoebe Smith, is a daughter of Nathan Smith and Elizabeth Robards Smith. I am researching John Griffin (born c. 1810) whose son William M. (b. c. 1837) married Jane Elizabeth Smith, a daughter of Thomas A. Smith and Margaret Ligon Smith. Thomas is a brother to Phoebe. I believe John Griffin and Joseph Griffin are brothers. The oldest son of Thomas A. Smith and Margaret Ligon Smith, Oscar Bennette Smith (b. 1845) married Lelia Walker (b. 1861), a daughter of Hal B. Walker (b. 1838). Are you related to these Walkers? I believe the Smith, Ligons, Farleys, Robards, Walkers and Marshalls all came into the Henderson, Kentucky area about the same time from the same area near Nottaway, Virginia.
