My mother was Blanche Smith Sikes and Edith (my grandmother) lived with us until she passed. Indeed Uncle Percy was her brother. I remember visits from Aunt Auntie I think it was when I was growing up. She was Percy's wife....was she not and therefore your grandmother?? I'd love to compare information with you. AND....before my mom died in 2003 I got some pretty enlighting info from a geneaology search group called British Ancestors regarding Mary Ellen's parents. She was not disinherited...as both were dead when she married Joseph. She had a brother....but the census at a later time shows her as an only child. Therefore there would have been no one to disinherit her, as we were told. I can't find any ship's records of their entry into the US and heard a story that 2 of their 3 bags were lost on the shipboard trip. My thoughts were that they created a story about who they were and perhaps they came in steerage with only 1 trunk. It wouldn't be the first time immigrees created new lives for themselves. Since I found out that Mary's father was a taylor (not landed gentry as we were told) and her mother a silk spinner, as was she before she left England....that has also clarified some things for me. Thanks, Janice Sikes Rountree (nickname is Jessie) My dad was Phil Sikes. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. As your Ezekial was born in 1795, my Stephen F would presumably have been his father. Hi I hate to kite these messages they get so long and complex. Where in Alabama did the Rufus Marion Griffin live. It is several Griffins scattered around in AL. . Winston County AL is always a possibility because it is called the FREE STATE OF Winston. before the Civil War the County tried to succeeded from Alabama and become an Independent State. The reason being there were so few slaves and the family loving hill folk did not want to take sides in the War. The raiding parties from both Rebel and Union came thru regularly and stole all the crops, cattle etc They would capture any man and conscript him into which ever side caught him. Or Kill him on the spot and burn out his family. The men would hide in the hollows, caves and ravine of the Bankhead National Forest. Many were executed and most were drafted to service. Brothers against brothers Fathers and sons divided. The people became very improvished, many starved , became ill and died. Four of my husbands family died in the fall of 1862 cause unknown. Many people came to Winston County hoping to escape the fighting. On the Court House grounds is a statue of a soldier dressed half Union and Half Rebel It has always been called the Free State of Winston. I do think this Doc Holiday thing is imagination gone wild !! I saw you begin with a Charles Griffin b; 1809. A part (Dempsey Griffin) of the Cumberland Co NC Griffin's went into Sumter Co GA and they had some Charles, Charlie, Dempsey Charles. So you may want to dive into those Griffins. I don't know what the "C" in Thomas C Griffin was, but have 'thought' it may have been Caleb, as that name came down the line also, even in Sumter GA. As far as I know there have been no Charles in Thomas & Nancy's line. Just keep on plugging along someday this puzzle will unravel, I hope !! I have tried to tie this infamous General W Griffin into Thomas and Nancy's family but have found nothing that gives proof (other than the name game and family lore). I wish this dear General was the founder of Griffin GA, it would make life easier. But the founder of Griffin GA was a Col. Lewis Griffin. And if memeory does'nt fail me this Lewis Griffin left GA and moved to TX where he died (??). My line is Thomas (Jr) son of Thomas & Nancy Stewart Griffin. They settled in Henry Co AL in the 1840's. Hi there, I might take a quick lookie loo and see if there is anything there. The Griffins did hail somewhat from Wales, but mostly all over the UK. In Devonshire where my Griffin family came from, there are tons of Griffins. The other day the Historical Society president of Devonshire sent me a painting copy of the house my family lived in before they emigrated. I'm gonna shoot it to Griffin-Bounces@rootsweb.com. That is so cool! I would love to be able to trace my family back to the "old country" and actually see a picture of their home. Better yet, I'd love to see it in person. Good luck in your search. As a result of your question about where my Griffins emigrated from, I did a bit more research and found some census information that I didn't have--so thanks! Diane, I'm still grasping at straws -- trying to find my great grandfather,Lee GRIFFIN and his brother Fate (Lafayette?) GRIFFIN. There may have been more siblings. I suspect they may have been born in NC so am wondering if these names are in your GRIFFIN line? If I am not supposed to communicate directly, please guide me in the proper way of making inquiries. I am a relative new member of Ancestry. I am searching for a Griffin fellow whose first name I do not know. If I am correct, he had a family with him on a farm in Garrard County in KY.in the late 1800's. My great Aunt Sophie Owens informed the Cowan and the Floyd families, descendants, in a Floyd-Cowan Family Reunion about 45 years ago that a Mr. _________Griffin, a farmer in that area, slept with a Native American lass ( I believe she was an employee nanny, helper who live with the family) named Clarissa and from that union came Fannie our great grandmother. To help further, when Fannie became of age Mr. ________ Griffin gave her hand to a Negro man named Wallace Cowan. About two years later Mr.________Griffin became unhappy with Wallace's treatment of Fannie. He separated them and gave her hand to Aaron Floyd in (May 15th) 1869 in Boyle, Lincoln, or Garrard County. Aaron was born, we believe, in 1839 -1840. Fannie and Aaron were about the same age but we are not sure where she was born,..possibly Boyle, Pulaski or Garrard Counties, KY. Among the uncertainties we have; ~first what was Mr. ____Griffin's (or was it Griffith) first name ? ~did he have a farm in Boyle or Garrard,..or both ad in what years...........? ~ what was his wife's name,..(Sarah ?) and what were the children's names....? ~ was he in the military in the war between States.....? Rank ? ~ did Aaron work on his farm,..or on the Davis Floyd's farm nearby ? We have a hundred more questions. We are open,..even eager, to respond to questions you may have. Does the information I have shared, help you in some manner. I hope we can connect with good results for us both. V.
