I came across the James Trainor / Bridget Griffin marraige by accident and have not researched it yet since it was a fairly recent find. James Trainor born abt 1850 and was a sailor so I know he moved around a lot (this is 1870 to early 1900's). I don't know when James immigrated for sure he was married in Ireland in 1875 and his wife died around 1879. Suspect marriage to Griffin 2nd? His son Francis says in 1906 James is in NY. In 1914 Francis says James is in Iowa. You might try looking in the Newry co Down and Belfast, Antrim co. Ireland area this is where I also found Griffins matching Elizebeth or Eliza and John maybe they or family were in Ireland before England. Flanigan sounds pretty Irish. Try Ross Davie's County Down website and Wylie's website also (should be able to find them thru google) Let me know if the Trainor connection works out. Thanks for all the Griffin info. hope it's not a dead end for you. Michelle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SteveShervey Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.griffin/3069.2.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Wow, the mother lode. Great information. When Henry Griffin emigrated in 1861, he was on his own. He lived in a boarding house in the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, and worked in the mines. He enlisted in the First Mich Cav in 1861. You wonder why these guys did it, he wasn't a long time American. They are definitely from Whimple, Devonshire, England. I've got their data from there. Charles and eliza Griffin were , what I would consider, very old to have emigrated. Their first farm was in Rockton, Illinois. I'm gonna check on a Bridget Griffin. I do know they had a spinster daughter who is buried with them in Guthrie. If you go onto my site, "Hill family of California", there is some writeups about them. They sold some acreage to Henry, who was also given some as a vet. I have copies of the Bills of sales of the land in Grove City, Adair county, Iowa. Evidently , when they got too old to farm , they moved down to be with their family in Iowa. After they were buried there,! Henry and Emily moved up to London, Ontario, Canada, and are buried there in Woodlawn Cemetery. I have been in contact with them there, and they are wonderful people, and very historically sensitive. They were getting ready to have a memorial for Canadian vets who served in the Union Army, and weren't aware that Henry was a vet. Henry's unit, the First Mich Cavalry went on to be the most fabled American Cavalry unit in the whole war. It was commanded by George A. Custer at Gettysberg, and was the primary reason for the Union holding the line. Custer and the First Cav stopped JEB Stuart and the whole dang Confederate Cavalry from hitting the backside during pickett's charge. Very interesting stuff. This naturalization information is really very cool. I'm going to go to the archives and see if I can get copies. My GGrandfather married the daughter of Henry and Emily. Her name was , for some reason, Eliza Jane Consenta Griffin. My family up there was right over the borde! r from Rockton, in Wisconsin. Eliza Jane Consenta Griffin became a Hi ll, after marrying John R. Hill. They , along with John's brother , Isaac, headed out in wagon trains for North Dakota, and ended up in Nebraska where my Grandfather was born. I just had contact with the Nebraska Hill family the other day for the first time. They evidently have some good photos , and some good documents. John Hill's brother, Isaac, kept a diary of the war, and included in it was his unit's meeting of Abe Lincoln. He spoke of the war, and then his reasoning for heading for North Dakota, and about his little daughter CoraBelle. CoraBelle is the Granny to the people in Nebraska. The Diary is fascinating. They have the original, and I have a copy, but a hand made copy from long ago which an Aunt of mine gave to me. Well, I'm excited to check out your information, and many thanks for the response. I have found Jno or John Griffin and Eliza Griffin witnessing my great grandfathers naturalization and wedding. No one in my family knows or can remember Griffin's, but they must have been pretty good friends or I suspect family. The time period for these documents were from 1906 to 1914. I called the cemetery that Trainor's are buried at here locally and just out of curiosity asked about John and Elizabeth also and they turned out to be at same cemetary in same lot. My great grandfather also says that his mother and father Trainor are in Iowa in 1914. It's interesting that you say they were in England. I'm researching my family, Trainor's in Northern Ireland. But I'm wondering if my great great grandfather James Trainor may have married a Bridget Griffin in England. And if this is possibly how the Griffin's and Trainor's came to be in Spokane and Iowa? Just in case you haven't found this information. I found John and Eliza or Elizabeth in census record here. I don't remember what date but it was on Ancestry search in the Spokane Census. She was about 60 and widowed and John I beleive is her son in his 30's. There is also a group of Griffins in the early 1800's Spokane census. Sounds like it's not the same Griffin's but just in case you can use the information. Good luck, Michelle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'm still looking around for this information, but I've made some progress. I know that my Eliz Griffin came over from ENGLAND< with Husband Charles Griffin. They farmed in Rockton , Ill. for many years, and were ultimately buried in Guthrie, Iowa. Someone has sent me the gravestones from there. I still don't know who her parents are, or what her maiden name was. I admire her very much though, as she and Chas. Griffin didn't emigrate until they were in their sixties. Their son Henry Griffin was a Civil war vet, having fought with the First Mich Cavalry, and ultimately wounded and captured, and then exchanged at Camp Parole, Md. Thanks so much. Hi Scott. Bless you for all the work you do for everyone. My Henry Griffin is not this guy. My guy, who was in the First Mich Cavalry, ended up being buried in a cemetery in London, Ontario, Canada. Do you know of how to pull that off??? I know he and his wife are there, because the cemetery staff sent me their death certificates, and verified same. thanks Again. s ________________________________ From: griffin-bounces@rootsweb.com on behalf of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon 5/11/2009 12:54 PM To: GRIFFIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GRIFFIN] Henry Mathew Griffin This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Bryan, according to my records: Jesse Amos "Jeppe" Griffin, married Abigail Octavia Johnson and had 10 children, and they lived in "Rocky Face," GA. (around Dalton). Abigail died in 1903, and Jesse remarried to "Lula" (Tallulah ?) Edwards...and she shows up on the 1910 and 1920 census with him. Jesse died in 1921. Their children's names do NOT include a "James Marion" - John Henry Griffin (my paternal grandfather) M/ Olivia Evelyn Morrison (and they lived in Rome, GA) - Lucinda Daisy Griffin M/ Lester Love - Marcus Hale Griffin M/ Helen Lenore Hunt - Mary Esther Griffin M/ Tommy Love Lowry - Dennis Griffin M/1 Virginia L. Jones & M/2 Carrie Mel Shipe - Fletcher Walton Griffin M/1 Ruby Carlton & M/2 Marian Long - Thomas Piece Griffin M/1 Pearl Irene Britton & M/2 Lillian Gates - Samuel Snow Griffin M/ Edith Johnson - James Amos Griffin (Died in childhood) - Noyce Lovie Griffin M/ Cecilia Bastian Unfortunately I do not have confirmed information about his parents, but the general story goes: An ancestor was granted land in GA in return for service in the Revolutionary War...and that eventually stimulated a move from North Carolina (which then, of course, also encompassed present day TN). Interesting point: the info above was compiled MANY years back by Noyce, my aunt Miriam (John Henry's oldest daughter) and a cousin referred to as "Rev. Reese Griffin" - which means he's descended from one of Jesse's brothers (also likely from N. GA). Maybe that clue will unlock something. I've heard there's a direct descendant living in the area who knows the full genealogy of most Griffins in the local cemetery.
