JOHN GRIEST was born probably in Bethel Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania on either 6-21-1716 or 11-2-1716, the record is not clear. On 4 August 1736 he requested “to come under the care of Friends” at Concord Meeting Chester Co. and on 18th day of ninth month 1736 he married there Susannah Pyle, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Chamberlain). He died 4 May 1780 surviving Susannah who died 15 May 1776. He was buried “in family burial ground on Griest farm, Latimar Township.” In 1746 John and Susannah got a certificate to the Sadsbury Meeting in Lancaster County, but it was mislaid. They got another certificate to the Warrington Meeting in York County 7 June 1749 and it was received there 18 September 1749. They apparently settled on the land granted John’s father in 1742 because this 298 acres was later divided, in 1779, among three sons, John, Thomas and Joseph. Children of John Griest and Susannah Pyle: i. Daniel, b. 10th mo 9, 1737, d. 7 mo. 7, 1787 or 91, m. 12 mo. 21, 1759, Warrington Meeting, Ann Rodgers, daughter of Andrew and Rebecca (Garretson). The story is told that Daniel was shot in the chest by a neighbor’s boy who was “incorrigible.” Daniel had somtimes been able to quiet him. He said to the boy “Why, thee don’t intend to shoot me?”, but the boy did - - and was later aquited as insane. Daniel and Ann had seven children. 5.ii. MARTHA, b. 1-20-1739/40 or 3-31-1740. iii. John, b. 6-19-1742, d. 6th mo., 1743. iv. John, b. 8-25-1744, d. 9th mo., 1744. v. Mary, b. 5, 8th mo. or 10-16-1745, d. 7-3-1827, m. at Warrington Meeting, John Garretson, son of John and Content (Hussey) Garretson. There were ten children. vi. Hannah, b. 11-7-1747 or 1-18-1748, d. 8-15-1836, m. at Warrington Meeting, William Wierman, son of Nicholas and Sarah (Cox). There were eleven children. vii. John, b. 10-8 or 12-19-1749, d. 1804, m. at Warrington Meeting on 11-13-1775, Susanna Cox who died 1813, dauther of William and Ruth Cox. There were no children. viii. Thomas, b. 2-14 or 2-25-1752, d. 11-30-1834, m. at Warrington Meeting Anne Cox, daughter of William and Ruth Cox, at a double wedding with John and Susannah on 11-23-1775. ix. Susannah, b. 3-15-1754, d. 4-21-1754. x. Joseph, b. 4-12-1755 or 12-4-1755, d. 9-24-1835, on 10-12-1782 he declared his intentions at Warrington Meeting to marry Mary Cleaver, daughter of Peter and Miriam (Frazier) Cleaver. Mary died 11-9-1782 before a wedding and Joseph waited three years and m. 7-21-1785 at Warrington, Rebecca Hussey, daughter of Riccord and Miriam (Harry). Several Cleaver’s were witnesses of this wedding. There were ten children. The Hussey family claims lineage from Sir Henry Hussey who was Bishop of Chichester in Essex (he died 1557) and had descendants in Boston and Nanducket. xi. Ann, b. 10-22-1757, d. 11-2-1757. xii. Lydia, b. 2-16 or 12-16-1758, d. 6-1850, m. at Warrington Meeting, Nicholas Wierman, son of Nicholas “The Miller” and Sarah (Cox) Wierman. They had ten children.
