Mary Morris. They moved to Pickaway Co., Ohio,in 1834. They had: 7-269 John *7-270 Ester, b. 4-1-1814 *7-271 Martha, b. 12-8-1815, d. 10-7-1877 *7-272 Matilda, b. 10- -1818 *7-273 Mary Ann, b. 12-27-1819 *7-274 Issac M., b. 5-31-1821, d. 12-2-1881 7-275 Israel, died young *7-276 Alvina, b. 5-7-1823, d. 4-4-1891 *7-277 Lucinda, b. 11-18-1826 Jonathan of: #5-43. Jacob Griest. b. 1-2 or 1-22-1770, d.1844, of Willing Griest & Ann Garretson, went to Ohio in 1788. (Jacob is also my great great grandfather). On 9-12-1791 Huntington Meeting (about six miles from Warrington Meeting) disowned Jacob for marriage to a non-Quaker, Ester Vanscoyac (b. 1771, d. 4-1-1830). It's possible he married her in the West and then returned, or married her before leaving, they went West with the migrations, and then returned. I just don't know the sequence of events; Cross in "The Griest Family" simply has the annotation "went to Ohio in 1788". At least some Vanscoyac's were originally from the Latimer Township area. "Thomas Stevens, Executor of Moses Vanscoyac, late of Latimer Twp. to Jacob Griest, of Latimer, $676.22 1/2, 30 acres, 180 partly in Huntington and partly in Latimer Twp. adjoining Thomas S. & Elizabeth Beever, Jacob Griest, and heir to Thomas Pierson, being part of a larger tract, Thomas Penn, patented 1-27-1756 to Aaron Vanscoyac and by his WILL to Moses Vanscoyac." Jacob and Ester had: *6-93 Jonathan, *6-94 John (my great grandfather), and *6-95 Ester (1798-1863). I've got photos of Jacob and Ester and can shoot some good digitals for you next time I'm in Pennsy if you don't have any. Since Jacob was disowned he and Ester couldn't be buried on Quaker ground. See my list msg. Details: John Griest 1694 as to how they came to be buried at Warrington Mtg. Jacob of: *4-8 Willing Griest (1736-1819) married Ann Garretson (1745 -1820) of John Garretson and Content Hussey. Lots of information on Willing in the Cross book and elsewhere. I believe I have a lead on the burial of Willing and Ann but not yet confirmed. Willing of: *3-1 John Griest of Bethel (est.b.1694-1748 to 51) m. Martha Baldwin (1694- est.1751) of Thomas Baldwin and Mary Linville (widow of Richard Linville, Sussex County, England). Remote possiblity/lead on burial of John of Bethel on the Bermudian Creek near Huntington Meeting to be investigated. Additional Notes: Virtually all Griest's in the U.S. are cousins. Per Cross about 80% are from the "York County Branch" descended from John of Bethel Twp. assumed to be of the third generation in the U.S. The other 20% are the "Lancaster County Branch" who have historically claimed descent from John Griest and Ann Butt who married in 1682. Definate linkages are not established and Cross begins their numbering with the assumed fifth generation Thomas Griest of Fremont, West Nottingham Twp., Chester Co., Pa. d. before 1825, m. 1779 to Priscilla Brabson, b. 4-1-1757. At least three branches have changed the spelling to Greist, including those of the Greist Manufacturing Co. (sewing machine attachments). And of course all of we Griest's endure all of those strange pronunciations that others come up with for us. Regards, Sid
