Sending to the lists of: MYRICK, MERRICK, THORPE, HARRIS, GREEN, GRAY, FOSTER, BARRETT Re: 1500s/1600s/Wales>England>Maryland, (Talbot Co.,) & Virginia, (James City Co./Isle of Wight Co./Sussex Co./Surry Co./Brunswick Co. MERRICK/MYRICK family group and marriages. Dear MYRICK/MERRICK/MEYRICK/MEURIG cousins who descend from Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr. of Isle of Wight County, Virginia and Daniel MERRICK of Talbot County, Maryland and their probable lineage out of Wales into England into Virginia and Maryland with merchant/marchaunt agents with the Virginia Company of London: While continuing to try to find more information regarding the ancestry of our Virginia ancestor: Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr., born: Bet. 1630-1660 prob. in Virginia, most likely in the area around Jamestown, James City County/Isle of Wight County/Sussex/Surry County where he was known to have resided which later was known as Brunswick....whom was known to have participated in and arrested during "BACON'S REBELLION." Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr. married wife # 1: Joan ?/THORPE? whom I believe is probably related to Timothy THORPE of Isle of Wight County, VA, parents of: Francis MYRICK, Sr. and Thomas MYRICK, Sr.. There were marriages of this THORPE family group into the HARRIS - JOYNER family group of Isle of Wight Co., VA at this time that also married into the MYRICK family. (Looking to connect more info here.) Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr. married wife # 2: Mrs. Mary Jane? GREEN GRAY, (d/o of mother: Mary FOSTER and ? GREEN,) and Mrs. Mary Jane? GREEN GRAY was the widow of (Sir) Francis GRAY. (Looking for more information on this FOSTER, GREEY, GRAY family group.) Regarding this Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr.: In the past, most of the Virginia through the South descendant researchers that I have communicated with have thought that Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr. was a son of the Thomas MEYRICK/MERRICK who was one of the 4 brothers who immigrated in connection with the Virginia Company of London, (family originally from Wales,) immigrating from Bristol, England to New England, Thomas, William, James, and John MERRICK/MEYRICK, whose parents were Dorothy BISHOP and (Sir) John MERRICK/MEYRICK, son of (Rev.) William MEYRICK, son of (Rev.) (Sir) John MEYRICK, son of (Capt.) Meurig ap Llewel(l)yn(n,) family out of Bodorgan, Anglesey, Wales. I guess this line of thought was because this Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr. had a son named Thomas MYRICK. However, after communication with descendant researchers of the New England "4 brothers" Thomas MERRICK and much research and communication between our MERRICK/MYRICK descendant researcher group descended from Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr. and wife # 1: Joan ?/THORPE? and wife # 2: Mrs. Mary Jane? GREEN GRAY. it appears very clear that this Owen MERRICK/MEYRICK, Sr. is not a descendant of the New England Thomas MEYRICK/MERRICK. But, instead, this Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr., born: Bet. 1630-1650, appears a likely candidate to the brother of Daniel MERRICK, I/Sr., born: Abt. 1630 who was from Talbot County, Maryland...not precisely sure where he was born....in England...Virginia or Maryland....who married Jane WALKER and are the direct ancestors for the Talbot County, Maryland MERRICK family of descendants. Daniel MERRICK of Maryland, current researcher and descendant of the first American Daniel MERRICK, I/Sr., above, graciously shared information with me that has helped me with my search and belief that our Virginia ancestor, Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, I/Sr., is quite probably the brother of Daniel MERRICK, and a son of John, son of Henry, son of (Sir) John MEYRICK/MERRICK, all of Virginia Company of London. This information is still relatively new to me so pardon me if there are any errors and, please, let me know if you see anything in error or can add anything....as this is an ongoing 'work in progress.' This Daniel MERRICK, I/Sr., (and I believe our Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr.,) is believed to have been the son of Elizabeth ? and immigrant, John MERRICK, born: Abt. 1605 prob. in England, who immigrated to Barbados and then to Virginia as a merchant/marchaunt with the Virginia Company of London, who was the son of Virginia Company of London agent, Henry MERRICK/MEYRICK, born; Abt. 1580 in either Wales or England, who was the son of Lucy POWELL, born: Abt. 1550 prob. in Wales, (d/o Morgan POWELL,) and Lucy POWELL's husband, (Sir) John MERRICK/MEYRICK/MEURIG, born: Abt. 1550 prob. in Wales, who was a 'Founding Member' of the Virginia Company of London in the Charter May 23, 1609 granted by King James I. (Sir) Johhn MERRICK/MEYRICK/MEURIG was the son of Catherine Owen BARRETT, (aka BARRATT, BURRATT, BURRILL, BURRELL,) of Gelliswic, Wales, ( my earlier information showed the name of Gillsarie, Wales,) born: Abt. 1506 in Gelliswic, Wales, (daughter of Owen BARRETT,) and Catherine's husband, (Bishop) (Rt. Reverend) Roland MEYRICK/MEURIG, born: 1506 in Llangadwaldr, Wales, died: 1561 in Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales, son of the aforementioned High Sheriff/(Captain) of the Guard, (Captain) Meurig/Meyrick ap Llewel(l)yn(n,) (have seeen him in some informationa s Llewel(l)yn(n) MEURIG/MEYRICK, (who was the 1st of this ancestry to use the family surname he chose of MEURIG/MEURIC that became Anglicized to MEYRICK and then to MERRICK and then with some in New England but, primarily, from Virginia into the South became MYRICK,) and his wife, Margaret vrych Roland/Rowland/(Syr/Sir) Roland, daughter of (Rector) (Syr/Sir) Roland/Rowland ap Howel(l)/Hywel(l.) I am looking for more information on Catherine Owen BARRETT of Gelliswic, Wales and her father, Owen/prob. Owain BARRETT, (akia BARRATT/BURRATT/BURRILL/BURRELL,) of Gelliswic, Wales, whom I have found with the spelling of Gelliswic for their location just today in information that I have shown below from the Table of Contents in a critical hypertext edition by Dana F. SUTTON in the Humanistic Letters section at the Shakepearse Institute, at the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston, Birmingham, United Kingdom. It is just a small reference listed there but shows: << Catherine Owen BARRETT of Gelliswic as the wife of Rowland MEYRICK, Bishop of Bangor, born: 1506, died: 1561.) >> The excerpt from that website as well as the links and urls for the pages are listed below. As far as I can tell, this is the only item pertaining to the BARRETT-MEYRICK marriage there but not sure of that. Interested in any other information that you have regarding them or any of the other names mentioned above in the possible lineage for the Daniel MERRICK mentioned and the Owen MERRICK/MYRICK, Sr. that I believe is his brother. Looking forward to hearing from you.
