I am trying to find out more about my great-grandfather William A. GREEN. Specifically, I am looking for information on his parentage, his life and activities after his first wife died in 1893, and his second marriage. And of course I'd love to find and share info with any cousins! William A. GREEN was born in Canada, probably Ontario -- about 1852, or maybe 1862 (sources conflict). Some sources give his middle name as Aaron, some give it as Arthur. His parents were supposedly also born in Canada, of English stock. He was was reportedly the nephew of a Tommy GREEN and cousin of a George Arthur SCOTT (1851-1902). He married Harriet TIBBS (1964-1893) in Parry Sound, Ontario in December 1880. She was one of several children of Sidney William and Jane (Hayward) TIBBS, who immigrated originally to Ohio in 1858, then moved up to the Parry Sound area in about 1862 to avoid the American Civil War. William's cousin George Arthur SCOTT also married a Tibbs daughter. I don't know his parents' names either, only that both he & William were nephews of a Tommy GREEN. In about 1882 or 1883, all of the TIBBS and the George SCOTT family, and possibly the William GREEN family, moved to Nebraska. About 1888-1889, the GREEN and SCOTT families moved to the Hildgard area near LaGrande, Oregon, and were shortly followed by Sidney and Jane TIBBS and the rest of the TIBBS children. Virtually all of them moved to the Sumpter Valley area of Baker County, Oregon, by 1890, working on construction of the Sumpter Valley Railroad, or working as loggers, farmers, etc. William's wife Harriet (Tibbs) GREEN died of consumption (tuberculosis) in December 1893. Tibbs family accounts have it that William's and Harriet's children were raised by their maternal grandparents Sidney & Jane TIBBS; however, the four children did appear with their father in the 1910 census for South Sumpter Precinct, Baker County, Oregon. But my dad says that my grandfather told him he had to basically fend for himself from the time he was 12 years old or so, after his mother Harriet died. William A. GREEN remarried, but my dad doesn't remember his second wife's name, and it's not known where they lived. He died 3 March 1949 in Grant County, Oregon. I am in the process of ordering a death certificate. His kids with Harriet were: Herbert William GREEN (1884-1954). Born in Parry Sound, Ontarioa Canada according to some sources; in Nebraska according to others. He had a ranch or farm in the Baker area, and had at least two daughters who married famers also in that area. Mae GREEN (1886 - ?). Born in Wisconsin, according to the 1900 census. She had two or three marriages, and at least at one point lived in the Glacier National Park area of northwest Montana (Flathead County -- which is where I grew up). I don't know any of her husband's names. James Claude GREEN (1888-1974) (my grandfather, who went by Claude). Born and lived all his life in Baker County, working in the lumber industry and the Sumpter Valley railroad. He married Edna Mabel Renneker in 1913 (known as Mabel); she died in 1978. Both are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Baker City, Baker County, Oregon. Charles "Charley" Green (1891-ca. 1905). Born and died in Baker County, Oregon, reportedly buried in Sumpter. Thanks for any help that any of you can give. (And I will do my best to return the favor whenever I can. In particular, I can do lookups in Alaska newspapers, given specific enough info on date/place, and a bit of time to get over to the university library.) -- Mel Green Anchorage, Alaska
