There are several stories about how the name GREEN originated. The most common is that at some point there was a family living on, or adjacent to, the village green. Others include the fact that a young, untried, warrior or bowman was green, like a twig, and the nickname stuck. All these stories are probably true. There has been talk on the list about a Lord de BOKETON de GREEN, and Tom can comment more on that, but his was certainly not the origin of the name. As for you query on William GREEN one would need rather more information before being able to investigate further. Whereabouts in England? That question would be absolutely crucial to tracking down his christening. Remember, neither William, nor GREEN are unusual names. Without some idea of his origins it's rather like saying you're looking for William GREEN born somewhere in North America without specifying province, state, county etc. To give you an idea of the difficulty, on some lines I have traced back into the 1500's, but every single one of my ancestors I have so far been able to trace all come from one single county in England (and my GREENs only go back to 1794 so far).
