Hello all, Thank you for all of the posts on William Green and Samuel Green. I am still sifting through it all. Though I am not sure now that I even have the right William Green. The way this started was: I found a newspaper article on microfilm from a local paper on one of my uncles. This article was from 1900's. In it he stated how proud he was of his grandfather William Green who served in the Revolutionary War. There is a piece in it taken from a letter my ancestor received from the secretary of war, Washington it said : Washington.DC July 3 1905, It is shown by the records of this office that one William Green served as a private in Colonel John Hathorn's Regiment, New York Militia, Revolutionary war. His name appears on a receipt roll under the following heading:"We the subscribers do acknowledge to have received from Col. John Hathorn, of Warwick, in Orange county, the several certificates as numbered with their sums annexed to our names." This roll shows that on September 16, 1784, William Green received certificate No. 981-440 for (shows the amount). His name also appears cancelled on a list of certificates returned by John Hathorn for pay of hes regiment of militia for November, 1779, belonging to Orange county. Nothing further concerning him has been found on record. The records show the Henry Wisner was lieutenant colonel and later colonel of the regiment mentioned." signed F.C. Hainsworth Military secretary. It says also that he (my uncle) remembers his uncle very well. That he died when he was ninety seven years of age. 'And a story that he told him. So I called a cousin of mine in Arizona. He is not new to genealogy. I am very new to all of this. He called and sent papers that he found William Green and he has sent for records. But he listed this William as being in NJ Militia. But was checking into. After all of this I am more confused than ever. I tend to believe now though that my cousin is researching the wrong William Green.I have a William Green listed on a paper from the Dar showing William on a list from the Orange County militia Fourth Regiment Under Col. John hathorn and Lieut. Col. Henry Wisner. I know this is my 5th great grandfather but don't know where to go from here. I am sorry this is so long but wanted to explain and hope that you have some tips on where I should go from here since I know you all have a lot more experience in this than I. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you cousins, Dawn Lepre
