The change of name, if, indeed, it occurred, may have been made for the purpose of gaining permission to leave England for America. 'Godly deceptions' of a similar kind were not unknown in those trying days. Smith had left Gloucestershire (England) for New England, and again Taunton for Narragansett, 'for his conscience' sake,' says Roger Williams; possibly young Greene was of a family sufficiently obnoxious to the authorities to render desirable a change of name as well as a change of residence." >> Hi Ron, My first thought when I read the information you have found, was that this was the AKA name supposedly used by John "The Fugitive" Greene when he had to leave England. You are probably awared that there is a "story" that John "The Fugitive" Greene came to America, and this use of the name "Clarke" could be the basis for the story. As I recall, John "The Fugitive" Greene, if he existed, lived before America was settled, but who knows how stories get started. Tom Green
