    1. Re: [GREEN-L] John "Moccasin" Green
    2. I also replied directly to the person who had asked about John "Moccasin" Green(e) with the info I had. Tom, I didn't compare your list of children to mine, but I do know we have some of the same ones. Ron, I don't have the three additional that you show so I'm forwarding your letter on to Edwin Greene who is THE authority of the Jersey settlement Greenes and the source of my information. Maybe he will reply himself. Here is what I have: John Green (called "Moccasin John"), born about 1772 , married about 1796n to Eliabeth Coffey, bonr about1781, daughter of Reuben Coffey and Sarah (Scott). He is on the 1840 Burke County (NC) Tax List but is not on the 1841 Caldwell County (NC) Tax List, the first taken when the new county was formed. Several of his children left Burke County and are found in Cherokee County, NC, in 1840. Apparently John and Elizabeth did not live together in their last years as she is found in Cherokee County, NC, with some of her children in the 1850 census. Her death date is not known. When Hannah Green applied for a Widow's Pension on 16 June 1850 on the service of John Green, there is a statement that a John Green, nephew of the groom, attended the infare, the day after the wedding at the home of the groom's father. The John Green, nephew, would have to be the son of Richard and Eleanor, and he would still be living at the time she applied for the pension. Many legendary stories have been attributed to a "Moccasin" John Green. Some of the stories indicate that John, who is the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (and the husband of the Hannah of the Widow's Pension), others that John, son of Richard and Eleanor is the one called "Moccasin." Still others indicate that John Greene of Mitchell County, NC, is "Moccasin" John. The factual information available about this last John seems to indicate that the researchers have confused all three men. The John Green, Revolutionary War veteran, who died in Mitchell County, NC, about 1852, does not seem to be a part of the family of Jeremiah Green of the Jersey settlement. Children of John and Elizabeth: James, born about 1799. Elijah, born 4 November 1800, married Mary Moody. Abel , born about 1802, married Mary Gragg. Amos, born 29 April 1804, married Cena Estes. Nancy, born about 1806, married James Coffey. Sarah, born about 1808, married William Coffey. Silas, born about 1810, married Susan _______. Daniel, born about 1814, married Eleanor _________. Jesse, born about 1815, married Mourning ________. Eleanor, born about 1818, married _______ Moody. Thomas, born about 1823, married Sarah _______. I cannot comment on the three additional children mentioned by Ron, except to say that the John Green of Mitchell County was married to Isabella Jones, which suggests to me that the Isabella who married James Buchanan might be in their family. Since another one of the three (Aaron) married a Buchanan it suggests that brother and sister may have married brother and sister. Perhaps someone might pinpoint the location of the Buchanans to see if they are in the same area with one of the John Greens. The same thing might be applied to the Sparks family to see if which Green Nancy Sparks might have married. Thanks for the info. I hope I haven't confused the situtation more. John Hawkins
