Jo COLONIAL FAMILIES OF THE Southern States of America GREEN FAMILY page 238 The Greens of Virginia, are of an ancient English family, tracing their lineage back to the early 14th century. Sir Henry Green, of "Green's Norton," Northampton Co., England, was Lord Chief Justice of England, ih the reign of Edward III., and was succeeded by his son Sir Thomas Green, whose daughter, Matilda, married Sir Thomas Parr, and their daughter, Katherine was the sixth wife of Henry VIII. WILLIAM GREEN, of "Green's Norton," Northampton Co., England, was an officer in the body guard of William Prince of Orange, he was a cadet of the family of "Green's Norton." He m. Eleanor Duff, who was of the noble Scotch Clan of Macduff, and had, ROBERT GREEN, the first of the family in Virginia; d. 1795; came to the Colony in 1712, located first in King George Co., and later in Orange, that portion of the county which was later created into Culpeper. In 1731 he was a Vestryman of St. Mark's Parish, and in 1736 a Burgess from Orange. He owned large estates in Virginia, he inherited 120,000 acres in the Valley from his uncle Sir William Duff. He m. Eleanor Dunn. Issue: 3--1. William, of Culpeper Co., Va., served in Va. Troops in French and Indian War, from 1755 to 1763; m. Miss Coleman, of Caroline Go., Va., and had issue; m. 2nd 5-13-1775 Lucy Blackwell. 3--2. Robert, of Culpeper Co., Va., m. Pattie Ball, dau. of Samuel and Ann (Tayloe) Ball, of Northumberland and later of Culpeper Co., Va., and had issue. (See Ball lineage.) 3--3.DUFF; of whom later (NEXT E-MAILS) 3--4.JOHN; of whom later (NEXT E-MAILS) 3--5.Nicholas, of Fauquier Co., Va., served as Justice of Rich-mond Co.,1792; he later moved to Fauquier Co. He m. ElizabethPrice, dau.of Capt. Ayalon and Joyce (Barber) Price, and had issue. 3--6.James, of Culpeper Co., served in Va. Troops Frenchand IndianWar. He m. Elizabeth Jones, dau. of Hon. Gabriel Jones. Issue: 4--1. Gabriel, of Green River, Ky., served as Ensign in the 6th Va., and later as 1st Lieut. in the Revolutionary War.Hem. Sarah Grant, and had issue. 4--2. James, served as Ensign of 6th Va. Reg., Revolutionary War; m. Miss Jones, and had issue. 4--3. Robert, of Fauquier Co., Va., m. Lucy Edmunds, dau. of Capt. William and Elizabeth (Blackwell) Edmunds, of Fauquier Co., Va., and had issue. (See Blackwell lineage.) 4--4.Duff, d. unto. 4--5.Jones, m. Miss Neville. 4--7.Dolly, m. Moses, d. 1769, of Fauquier Co., Va., m. 1st Mary Blackwell d. 1767; and 2nd 1768 Lucy Blackwell, dau.of William and Elizabeth (Crump) Blackwell, of Fauquier Co., Va.; his wid. m. (second) 1770 William Pickett, of Fauquier Co., Va. (SeeBlackwell and Pickett lineage.) Issue: 1st m.: 4--1. Sally, b. 1765 d. without issue. 4--2. Eleanor, b. 1767, m. Gen. James Williams, who served with distinction as Capt., 1775 to 1784, Revolutionary War; and as Maj.-Gen. Va. Troops, War of 1812; son of William Williams. He m. 2nd Elizabeth Bruce. Issue: 5--1.James, d. unm. 5--2.William, m. Miss Stubblefield. 5--3.Sarah, m. Hon. George Strother, or Culpeper Co., Va., who served in U.S. Congress.
