    1. [GREEN-L] Re: Lewis Green and the Bear.
    2. In a message dated 98-10-14 08:54:03 EDT, you write: << Boone must have been very frightened of the bear, callous about the welfare of the injured man, chased away by indians or some such. It's hard to imagine that anyone would leave an injured man in the wilderness so long as there was any sign of life. It doesn't sound as if Boone would be the sort of hunting companion one would want in a tight situation, does it? >> Hi Hugh, I bet Lewis Green was very hesitant to go bear hunting with anyone after that exprience!!! There is a small booklet compiled by Charles A. Barker in 1995 that includes a number of transcribed letter from old men in the late 1880's in which they tell there father's version of the story. There is one or two stories which say the creek was named for a man named Lewis as you indicated, but the majority seemed to believe the creek was names in "honor" of Lewis Green. Who knows??? It is also not clear what involvment that Daniel Boone had in the story. One letter says that he came back to get Lewis Green and they huged and laughed because Lewis was still alive. Maybe Daniel Boone believed there was no hope that Lewis Green would live and they were about to be snowed in for the winter with no food. I have made an interesting discovery this week, in that I received an E-Mail saying the Lewis Green in the bear story was the one that married Elizabeth Lauderdale. I show that this Lewis Green was born about 1710 in Prince George County, Virginia, and died August 6, 1785 in Washington County, Virginia. One of the letters in the Baker booklet talks about Lewis Green being from Virginia, but other letters say he live in the Jersey Settlement on the Yadkin River where Jeremiah Green lived. There is a foot note with one of the letters that says that Zacharia Green was the son of the Lewis Green in the bear story, and I show that Lewis and Elizabeth Lauderdale Green did have a son named Zahariah Green, born 1760 in Fincastle, Virginia, and died September 12, 1840 in Nashville, Tennessee. I show that Zahariah Green married Sarah McKain. Zahariah Green had a brother named Lewis Green, born May 5, 1751 who married Ester Kilgore, and it was this Lewis Green that the Memorial Day ceremony was held for this year in Kentucky that I told you about. I have tried to connect this Lewis Green family to the one with the Burwell Green family, but have not been able to do so. This is the family where Lewis Green had a daughter named Susannah Green, born about 1700, who married William Gilliam, and their daughter Margaret Gilliam married Richard Hill in 1742. There are a lot of Lewis Greens that were living in both Virginia and North Carolina, and both David Green and I believe there is some connection to our William and Elijah Green, but have not been able to find the connection, if there is one. I know you are interested in any family with "Lewis" in it, so thought you would like the bear story. Best Regards, Tom Green
