Hello GREEN Researchers: Effective today, I am your new listowner. I know many of you already, as I have been a subscriber and contributor to this list for several years. My name is Bill Caddell. I live on Lake Granbury in Hood Co., TX. I also administer the CADDELL, CADLE, CADWELL, CAUDLE, CORDELL, KEADLE, CALDER, CALDERWOOD, BATTLES, BIRCHFIELD, BURCHFIELD, BURWELL, TIDMORE surname lists, the SCT-INVERNESS and MORAY lists in SCT and the ALSTCLAI list of St Clair Co., AL. According to family lore, the progenitor of my family in America was Andrew CADDEL (b. c1730, Edinburgh, SCT and d. c1825, St Clair Co., AL and my gggg grandfather) married c1765, Orange Co., NC to Jean HENDERSON (b. c1745, VA). They had the following known children: Margaret (m. James ANDERSON), Phoeby (m. Burwell GREEN), Elizabeth (m. Lewis GREEN half-brother of Burwell GREEN), John Calvin (m. Mary JAY), Andrew Henderson (m. Susan TIDMORE GREEN), Martha (m. Henry JOHNS), Jane (m. John HALE), Unisa (m. unknown), William Riley (m. Jane GREEN), and Benjamin (m. Delila). According to tradition, Andrew CADDEL left Scotland, stowing away of a ship to America, at the age of 14. It was reported that he served indentured service for his passage. My research has led me back to Virginia, where I first located Andrew in 1751 as witness to a deed in Spotsylvania Co., VA. He next was recorded in 1754 in Orange Co., NC. Since then I have found that many of the close associates of Andrew in Orange Co., NC also came from the Spotsylvania-Hanover Co., VA area. One of which was the LEA family. Andrew, the LEAs and several others did early surveying of land in Orange Co., NC. It is reported by LEA descendants that the LEA lived in Granville Co., NC for a short time before Orange Co., NC. Several of the GREEN family married CADDEL as well as associates of the CADDEL family. I have not yet determined if Andrew knew the GREEN family in Virginia. I understand that these GREEN were in Surry, Prince George County and Charles City County, VA as early as 1650. I've been told that the progenitor for this GREEN family was Lewis GREEN Sr. (b. England :d. 1725, Prince Geo. Co., VA) and wife Susannah GRIGGS. Then, William GREEN Sr. (m. Mary) and William GREEN Jr. (1st m. unknown, 2nd m. Lucy TYUS). 1787 is the earliest date that I find which mentions a GREEN (Lewis GREEN) and Andrew CADDELL together in Caswell Co., NC. Lewis was the son of William GREEN Jr. and his first wife (name unknown). Lewis married Elizabeth CADDEL (daughter of Andrew CADDEL) in Dec 1789. In Jul 1789, Burwell Green married Phoeby CADDEL (daughter of Andrew CADDEL). Burwell, half-brother to Lewis, was the son of William GREEN Jr and his second wife, Lucy TYUS. The family remained in the Orange/Caswell/Person Co., NC area until around 1800 when they moved to Pendleton Dist., SC. Pendleton District land records show Burwell GREEN owned large tracts of land there. The family left Pendleton District and settled in Alabama in about 1818 at the time it became a state. They were in the TUSKALOOSA (later changed to TUSCALOOSA) and St Clair areas. They were in the 1820 census of St Clair County. Descendants generally scattered across the northern half of Alabama. I have been researching the CADDELL(L) name and variations for the last 40 years. For the past 15 years I've concentrated on Scotland research. I've been to Scotland twice and have found much information on the origin of the family in Scotland. My early research is at "http://www.castles.org/Chatelaine/CALDER.HTM". If I may be of assistance to any of you at any time, please let me know. I would like to have a ROLL CALL and, please, each of you tell of your research, brick walls, interests, or whatever you would like to say - as long as it's of genealogy related. Bill
