I think a more likely explanation is the illiterateacy and errors of the past. How many times have you, a "Greene", had to tell someone that there is an "E" on the end of your name. Poorly educated census takers and tax list preparers would, more than likely, spell the name "Green" rather than "Greene". I believe that a lot of the explanations offered are merely family lore handed down through the generations. In my family research, I have found both version of the name, sometimes in the same family generation.
