    2. I have an ancestor who was born in Eastern Tennessee. His name is Gilbert GREENE, and he was born 12 February 1824 in Hawkins County. At one time, I thought that he was in some way connected to someone named Elijah, but dismissed that for lack on evidence. His ancestors are unknown to me, but I do know that he had a sister named Ruth and a brother named William. There is also evidence to suggest that he may have also had siblings named Amzie, Gulford, Henderson, Mandy, Martha and Isaac. So far I can't prove any of these connections. I would be interested to know if these names are in any way connected with your Greens. Darrell Blue Yakima, WA

    3. http://geocities.com/janet_ariciu/Green.html John Green II born 14 Feb 1851 d 3 Apr 1937. In 1936, at the age of 86 John Green sat down and told his family story to his grand-daughter Margaret Leolia Green. Leolia wrote what her grandfather said and typed it up. She recopied it and pass it out among the family. " Green Family Story" "Grandfather John Green SR, married a Tipton and moved from (Georgia???) to near Lexington, LaFayette Co. MO. I think they came from Eastern Tennessee. May be near Georgia area or maybe their parents came from Georgia. But John or Elisha or Sarah were from Eastern Tennessee. There were eleven (11) brothers and a sister, Sarah Green. John SR and a brother Elias (Elisha) Green, settled in Platte Co. MO., far from Fort Leavenworth. Elias (Elisha) Green married Lindy (Melinda) Green. Linday maiden was Green but they were not related." 1. Giles Green (1800 VA to 1881 KY)
    2. Frankie Perry
    3. Giles (gravestone says "Jiles") Green, b. ca 1800 in Virginia, d. 1881 in Johnson County, Kentucky, was my great-great-great-grandfather, through his son Thomas, b. 1820 VA. Several questions have arisen concerning Giles/Jiles. If you have information that would help clarify these, I would appreciate hearing from you. 1. Who was Giles's first spouse? W.C. Kozee in "Early Families in Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky", p. 275, lists his first wife as "Katie Chandler", and states that Katie is probably the d/o Thomas Chandler. John Chandler in "Descendants of William Chandler Born 1700, Died 1747/8 in Amelia County, VA" gives her name as "Catherine (Katy) Chandler"(p. 26). A review of three of his children's death records show the name of their mother as "Nancy Chandler". A gravestone was found that appears to read "Nancy, wife of Jiles Green, born June 18, 1799, died Jan 18, 1845". Does anyone have any other documentation that would clarify the name of Jiles's spouse: Nancy Chandler, Katie Chandler, Catherine "Katy" Chandler, or ??? (His second spouse was Margaret Ghent Yates, a widow.) 2. Were Giles and Enoch brothers? Kozee and Chandler, in the above listed sources, state that Giles and Enoch are brothers and that they married sisters. (Enoch married Elizabeth Chandler, d/o Thomas Chandler in Cabell Co., VA on April 17, 1831. (Other sources list Elizabeth's name as Margaret Elizabeth and Mary Elizabeth. His second wife was named "Margaret>) Both Giles/Jiles and Enoch came to KY and ended up living on Hoods Fork in Lawrence County -until the formation of Johnson County when Jiles/Giles' land became part of Johnson. The question has arisen as to what documentation there is that the two men are brothers. Does someone else have info on this? 3. Who was William Green, the father of Giles? A marriage record has been found for William Green and Judith Ann Gordon, with bond signed by Giles Gordon, February 2, 1792 in Campbell Co., VA. Judith's death is recorded in Lawrence Co., KY on Hoods Fork in 1856. Can anyone tell me any more about William?

    1. William A. GREEN (1852 ? - 1949) of Ontario & eastern Oregon
    2. Mel Green
    3. I am trying to find out more about my great-grandfather William A. GREEN. Specifically, I am looking for information on his parentage, his life and activities after his first wife died in 1893, and his second marriage. And of course I'd love to find and share info with any cousins! William A. GREEN was born in Canada, probably Ontario -- about 1852, or maybe 1862 (sources conflict). Some sources give his middle name as Aaron, some give it as Arthur. His parents were supposedly also born in Canada, of English stock. He was was reportedly the nephew of a Tommy GREEN and cousin of a George Arthur SCOTT (1851-1902). He married Harriet TIBBS (1964-1893) in Parry Sound, Ontario in December 1880. She was one of several children of Sidney William and Jane (Hayward) TIBBS, who immigrated originally to Ohio in 1858, then moved up to the Parry Sound area in about 1862 to avoid the American Civil War. William's cousin George Arthur SCOTT also married a Tibbs daughter. I don't know his parents' names either, only that both he & William were nephews of a Tommy GREEN. In about 1882 or 1883, all of the TIBBS and the George SCOTT family, and possibly the William GREEN family, moved to Nebraska. About 1888-1889, the GREEN and SCOTT families moved to the Hildgard area near LaGrande, Oregon, and were shortly followed by Sidney and Jane TIBBS and the rest of the TIBBS children. Virtually all of them moved to the Sumpter Valley area of Baker County, Oregon, by 1890, working on construction of the Sumpter Valley Railroad, or working as loggers, farmers, etc. William's wife Harriet (Tibbs) GREEN died of consumption (tuberculosis) in December 1893. Tibbs family accounts have it that William's and Harriet's children were raised by their maternal grandparents Sidney & Jane TIBBS; however, the four children did appear with their father in the 1910 census for South Sumpter Precinct, Baker County, Oregon. But my dad says that my grandfather told him he had to basically fend for himself from the time he was 12 years old or so, after his mother Harriet died. William A. GREEN remarried, but my dad doesn't remember his second wife's name, and it's not known where they lived. He died 3 March 1949 in Grant County, Oregon. I am in the process of ordering a death certificate. His kids with Harriet were: Herbert William GREEN (1884-1954). Born in Parry Sound, Ontarioa Canada according to some sources; in Nebraska according to others. He had a ranch or farm in the Baker area, and had at least two daughters who married famers also in that area. Mae GREEN (1886 - ?). Born in Wisconsin, according to the 1900 census. She had two or three marriages, and at least at one point lived in the Glacier National Park area of northwest Montana (Flathead County -- which is where I grew up). I don't know any of her husband's names. James Claude GREEN (1888-1974) (my grandfather, who went by Claude). Born and lived all his life in Baker County, working in the lumber industry and the Sumpter Valley railroad. He married Edna Mabel Renneker in 1913 (known as Mabel); she died in 1978. Both are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Baker City, Baker County, Oregon. Charles "Charley" Green (1891-ca. 1905). Born and died in Baker County, Oregon, reportedly buried in Sumpter. Thanks for any help that any of you can give. (And I will do my best to return the favor whenever I can. In particular, I can do lookups in Alaska newspapers, given specific enough info on date/place, and a bit of time to get over to the university library.) -- Mel Green Anchorage, Alaska

    2. Hello GREEN family cousins, listers, and researchers. The list has been fairly quiet, but recently has more than our share of spam. Just wanted to let you know that I forward all spam msgs that do get through back to Rootsweb for review and blocking - and the amount of spam that Rootsweb does block is s ignificant. I had thought about moderating the list, but is not recommended by Rootsweb for an extended period of time. Basically - if a msg carries the 'not a subscriber" tag - delete at will. As an update: There are 422 subscribers to GREEN-L and 135 subscribers to GREEN-D. Hope that your research sojourns this summer are fruitful and you will share your successes with us. Thanks for making this list informative and valuable to the genealogy community. - Dave Green, list admin.
