    1. Gen. Nathanael Greene
    2. For years there was a tradition in our family that we were direct descendants of General Greene. I found an excellent biography of him in the library that gives a great deal of family information, including collateral lines. I cannot remember the title of the book, but I suspect that many libraries might have it or be able to secure it through inter-library loan. As well known as the General is, probably a request for a biography would get it or one equally good for you. John Hawkins, Lenoir, NC (Not a descendant of the General after all)

    1. John or David Green - any PA Green's out there?
    2. Colleen Lopez
    3. Hello cousins, I am looking once again for John Green born aprx. 1777 where?, however his son David Green Sr. born 1796 we believe he married a Barbera Ridsbaugh - still checking validity of that. However his son David Green jr. married a Rachel Peffer. All in PA. The children of John Green b. 1777 wre all born in PA. Do any of you have a Jonathan or John Green in your family lines born around 1777? I have no idea of where my Greens came from, or have any idea's as to how I can breach this wall? The 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carlisle, Cumberland County PA have alot of the records I need. However they no longer keep them in that location. We had alot of marriages, baptisms, and even deaths that were recorded there. I just wish I could find these records somewhere. Thanks so much, Colleen "Green" Lopez colleenlopez@yahoo.com

    3. Tom and others, While researching at the Laurens County SC library I made a copy of an article about Gen Nathaniel Greene. My handwritten scribble says Sept 5, 1973, page WW Wild 1775. I just wanted to make sure you knew this, I'll retype a little bit. I think in 1973 a man named Mr. Ezell did on slide show on this. "Gen Nathaniel Greene brought his Army Regulators militia and backwoodsmen to Star Fort on May 22, 1781 in an attempt to force the British soldiers and Tories from the fort"... Gen. Greene had 1. Regular troops from Connecticut and PA, 2. Militia from NC , SC , VA 3. The frontiers. ...Patriots had the Tories who were led by Joseph Robinson and Lauren County's own Patrick Cunningham...This information and more was discovered by the university who uncovered his grave... Does this interest anyone? Tammy Lynn Collard

    3. Marilyn......... Abigail wasn't the daughter of Nathaniel Greene, the general. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Greene, the son of James Greene and Rebecca Cahoon - all from the John of Quidnessett line of Greenes. The general was from the John the Surgeon line of Greenes. Abigail was the cousin of Job Greene, son of Charles, grandson of James and Rebecca Cahoon Greene. Job is believed to be our ancestor. Abigail and Jonathan Briggs' son Giles Briggs was often living near our Greenes, and Giles married Catherine Putman, the sister of my gr gr gr grandmother Mercy Putman Greene. Hope this helps! I can find no other reference to Daniel or Isaac Green in this book . One of Isaac's daughters, Sarah Ann is said to have married Eli Norman who was from Stafford Co, VA, migrated with his father Thomas Norman to Surry Co, NC and then to SC. Priscilla Green (dtr of Isaac) married Reuben Ross about 1760 probably in NC and moved to SC before 1771. Alse Green (dtr of Isaac) married unknown Landsdale/Lansdale Richmond Co. 1. Gen. Green/e in GA: connection to Watkins & Eli Whitney
    2. Geneology York
    3. Following is an old note from Watkins records: According to "Watkins Family" page 510, "He (Watkins) was a planter of large means, and in studying the application of mechanics, more for pleasure than for profit, discovered, and made, the first GIN for upland cotton and had it in successful operation while Eli whitney, at the house of Mrs. Gen. Nathaniel Greene, in savannah, GA,-puzzled and thwarted-was working at a similar model. Upon hearing of Mr. Watkins' invention, he did the wise thing in going to inspect it in person. He was courtesouly received, in the old-time Southern style, and shown by the amiable host over the whole plantation, and all its attractive features and improvements delightedly exhibited, and he found the new gin corresponded with his own conception, with the additional idea that one cylinder, studded at right angles with parallel rows of wire teeth to tear the lint from the seed, and another cylinder provided with brushes to sweep it off, and revolving, not above, but on a horizontal plane, would great improve his original plan," et. This was in 1792, and he soon had a success. "But every one in GA regarded whitney merely as the IMPROVER and INTRODUCER of the cotton gin, and not the INVENTOR; and watkins was continually urged to bring counter-suits against whitney; but, as was said, he had studied the application of mechanics more for amusement than profit, and invariablly refused and allowed things to take their own course. Whitney was born in Massachusetts in 1765. He had been disappointed in gaining the position of private tutor in a private family, for which he had come south, and Mrs. Greene befriended him with the fortunate result to the world." "All that is here stated regarding Joseph Watkin can, upon demand, be thoroughly substantiated." (See article by Hugh N. Starnes, in the "Southern bivouac" for Dec,. 1885, on "The cotton gin, its Invention and Affect." Gen. Nathaniel Green/e’s widow later married the financial partner of Eli Whitney, Dr. Phineas Miller, who became a GA state senator. Whitney had tutored the Green/e children when the General was still alive, as best I can determine. At one time a prominent GA Watkins, brother to the presumed inventor of the cotton gin, considered litigation against the Whitney family, but the attorney’s wealthy brother probably stopped the suit because of the popularity of their deceased neighbor. The Watkins brother who was the attorney was also very notable and in GA annals is credited with having brought law to the Southern frontier. I have a Rachel Green/e b ca 1830 who married a John C. Hooker b ca 1810 MD/NC whose descendants married into my Watkins family in TN. I have studied ties between the Green/e and Watkins families for some time, trying to determine how/if they are connected in GA. If anyone has additional information about this study, I would greatly appreciate it. Please contact me directly for lengthy communication.
