A big "Hi" to all you GREEN researchers in the American South in the Post-Revolutionary period! Okay, there has been a tiny bit of movement lately -- I just got a letter from a co-researcher with some new confirmation. A Jesse GREEN (m. Morning BANDY) has been confirmed (via fourth-generation family record, not contemporary) to be a son of a Enoch GREEN that my line has been searching for information about. Enoch still remains a bit of a mystery, but at least there is now something of a trail for him. Our current sketch looks like this: --------------- 1-- Shadrack GREEN (b. 1760-1765, d. Mar 1847) sp-- Martha ³Patty² JONES (b 26 May 1773) 2-- Enoch GREEN (b. 1790-1792, Rutherford Co., NC) sp-- "Polly" or "Pops" (b. 1794-1804) 3-- male b.~1814 3-- female b.~1816 3-- Jesse GREEN (b. 26 Jul 1818 "Burke Co", NC - d. 17 Nov 1905) m. Mourning BANDY (b. 26 Dec. 1816 Burke Co. NC-d. 21 Mar. 1896 Beechcreek NC)in Haywood County, NC on 26 Dec 1837 3-- male b.~1821 3-- female b.~1823 [ NOTE: Shadrach's will (1847) suggests Enoch has a son named George --this may be the George GREEN (b.1817) in Cleveland County in 1850. In 1820 Rutherford census Enoch GREEN appears with a wife (b.1794-1804), and one daughter and two sons all b. 1810-1820.] --------------------- (We have other children for Shadrach.) According to the letter, Enoch spent his whole life in Yancey county (near Burnsville) although that county wasn't created out of Burke until Enoch was in mid-life, and he appears in the 1820 federal census in Rutherford county (south of Burke) living next door to his father. We have very little to go on with respect to Enoch. From the will, we have ³GEORGE GREEN, son of ENOCH GREEN², as a son. We have the 1820 census, when he has a wife age 16-26 and three children under age 10: two boys, and a girl. It can be estimated that he has been married five to six years at least, so his wife would be at least 21 if not closer to the 26-year-old break point. Enoch is not listed in the 1830 census in either Rutherford or Burke counties, so where he was is a mystery. There is a listing for an Enoch in the 1840 census for Burke County. Let¹s examine this record: 2101001000000-0311001000000 The husband, Enoch, is born 1791-1800. The wife is born 1791-1800. So far, so good. Also in the household are one boy and one girl each in the 15-20 year old category, and one girl 10-15. These would be expected to have appeared in the last census, if we could find it. New for this census are three girls and one boy age 5-10, (b.1830-1835) and two boys in the 0-5 category(b.1835-1840). No children over age 20 are listed. However, in 1840 there is a ³G.² GREEN listed in Rutherford county, age 20-30, with wife and two kids. It is possible that the girl child also remained in Rutherford. In 1850 there is a census record for a George Green in Cleveland county which places his year of birth at 1817, which is consistent with the 1820 census record for Enoch, so it is possible that this is the George referred to in the will. If there is anyone out there with information which can throw any light on this family, we would appreciate it. Good hunting! Emily Jackson
Does anyone know the 'key' to finding people in that area of eastern Tennessee that was originally North Carolina? I found some information on TNGenNet Inc about military land grants that were sold to speculators. Tennessee couldn't do much with that eastern land for a long time because North Carolina had given these grants of thousands of acres. Is there an expert out there? I think my Lewis Greens were in the midst of this confusion! Pat in Oklahoma

Hi, Its been awhile since seeing anything posted on this Green line so I wondered if anybody has been working on it lately? This line is VERY confusing due to there being several different Lewis Green lines and I've seen them mixed up with each other. The last I saw was the Green DNA project website had shown that the Lewis Green/ Susannah Griggs line was not a match (they were once believed to be my Lewis Green's line) My Lewis Green is believed to have been born in Prince George Co,Va abt 1724 (some sources say 1710),He died in 1784 in Blue Spring Rd near Glascow,Ky. He married Elizabeth Sarah Lauderdale daughter of William Lauderdale. He was a private serving under Robert McKenzie in Tenn. He served in the French Indian War . Records show he was a vestryman in the church at Kilgore Station. his son Lewis Green,JR married Esther Kilgore, Nancy Green married Peter Hutchinson (this is my line),son James married Jane Porter he was killed by indians and Jane remarried Robin Kilgore. Thomas married Mildred Appling,Elizabeth married Moses Foley. Sound like we know alot on this Lewis Green but theres been so much confusion of data all these lines melt to gether! I DO know Lewis ,Jr and Esther Kilgore had a son named Burwell although I've seen other lines claim him too.Lewis,Sr's will named his daughter Sarah who married Josiah Payne, and his son in law Benjamin Nicholson who married daughter Jemima so in this will we know its the right Lewis Green but no evidence as of yet who his upline is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This line also includes the collateral lines of Sparks, Wells, Hutchinson,Kilgore, Porter, Walker,Hager among others. Thanks! Billie C.
Hi Glenda, You were looking for info on Stephen GREEN & Eliza JONAS. I'm not researching any of these families, but I took a look to see what I could come up with, and I think I have some news for you. GREEN - 4 - M - W - NC I believe you mentioned that you have the data for the 1880 census for Stephen's family, so I won't post that. I guess you can see from the above census records that STEPHEN was more than likely surrounded by his siblings, and perhaps his widowed mother, NANCY GREEN, who was 65, born Virginia (1785) in the 1850 census. She owned property worth $600 that year, which she more than like inherited from her deceased husband. Also note, living in the household of WILLIAM GREEN, a 90 year old NANA GREEN (b;abt 1760). Perhaps she was the grandmother of most of these GREENS. I would also like to point out the prevalence of the first names of WILLIAM and NANCY in the families. WILLIAM GREEN, who was 61 in 1850, seems to have been the oldest brother, it's possible he was named after his father??? I'm not exactly sure who ISAAC GREEN (b:1782)would have been who was also living with WILLIAM GREEN in 1850, but I can guess he may have been an uncle, perhaps his father's younger brother??? Checking back in earlier census: 1840 Richmond County,North Carolina,(Division allotted to John Baber), Image 63, #_70: (the census taker actually assigned numbers to the individual households, very unusual, but very helpful, although the first digits on this page were folded under) STEPHEN GREEN 2 - WM = 5 1 (or) 4 -WF - 5-10 (nbr is marked over) 1 - WM = 20-30 1 -WF = 20 - 30 1840 Richmond County,North Carolina, (Div. allotted to John Baber), Image 49, #825: NANCY GREEN 3- WM = 5 1 - WF = 10 -15 3 - WM = 5-10 1 - WF = 40 - 50 3 - WM = 10 -15 1 - WM = 15 -20 Image 35, #628: NANCY GREEN 1 - WF = 60 - 70 #634: WM. In 1790, there was one, while beginning in 1800, with the one year's exception, there were two, and later three WILLIAM GREENs which I did not go any deeper into, but I would suggest further study of those earlier census if you want to determine more about the origins. You'll notice, too, that the LOVELACE/LOVELESS & GREEN families seemed to have followed each others migrations between Richmond & Rutherford Counties. But for whatever reason by 1870, STEPHEN GREEN had left his wife and remarried, and settled in South Carolina and started a whole new family. Now for why I included some of those other families. I found some marriages and I think you'll understand also by some of the Bondsmen. Note that it was quite common for a relative, (a brother?) to post the bond for a marriage, which you shall see my point. Also many times brothers would marry sisters that came from the same families (i.e.GREENS married MOORES) Most of these marriages I chose because I saw the families living nearby: : Groom: Stephen In reading over my submission I discovered that I gave the wrong birthdate for Penelope Green --- it should be November 11, 1819. The birthdate I gave was for her adopted son John Giddings Bell. Hopefully this will open some doors. Thanks, Sue Wycoff Original Message: Date: Thu, 21 Apr 2005 07:57:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Sue Wycoff <wycoff2@yahoo.com> To: GREEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: GREEN, Penelope b1857 Florida Since this list has become so active lately, maybe someone can send me in a direction of success on this brickwall. My GG-grandmother was Penelope Green b January 6, 1857 in Florida. I have scant information other than that. I think it was either Leon or Hamilton County in Florida. Census records show that she was from Florida. She married John Giddings Bell of Tallahassee, Leon Co., Florida b May 2, 1820. (I have information that he was adopted by Thomas Bell & Abigail Grimes). They both lived in Bellville, Austin Co.,TX Penelope died in Bellville, on December 21, 1902. I came home from a short vacation and found all this email, and I don't have time to read them all. I will also unsubscribe if this keep up" "I realize you are just trying to be helpful to those on the list but I DONT apreciate my mailbox being toally flooded with info I dont need!!" I receive my list in Digest mode and can scan quickly down to see if there is anything useful or of interest AND my email box doesn't get "cluttered" as you claim. Why punish yourself by unsubscribing to the list --- just change to Digest mode. You may miss something that may pertain to you if you unsubscribe. Remember -- it may not pertain to your family group but what's being published may be just what's needed for another researcher. Since this list has become so active lately, maybe someone can send me in a direction of success on this brickwall. Does anyone have information on who her parents were and where in Florida she was born? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sue Wycoff wycoff2@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! I am looking specifically for any information from the !st Evangelical Lutheran Church Graveyard that may shed a light as to my ancestors. John Green was born aprx. 1777, location unknown, but his son David Green Sr. was baptised there and married many of their children were baptised there as well. One wonderful researcher found David Green Jr.'s b. 1818 in a photo album with alot of Pastors. David Green jr married Rachel Peffer, and had many children about 1850 the main family and members made the move out west to Iowa and Nebraska. I have alot of information on their migration move and different historical records on some. I will share with anyone interested.
