    1. [GREEN-L] Continued search for Nathaniel Green
    2. Harold Green
    3. Still searching for a gr grandfather, Nathaniel Green. I have posted this before but am hoping one of the newer list members might know something of this man's family from Virginia. I will quote the first paragraph of his obit, "Nathaniel Green was born in Worth County, Virginia, November 20th, 1822. He came to Clay County, state of Indiana, in 1857, where he has continued to reside until his death, which occured, January 18th, 1897". An old uncle toal an older sister, (both now deceased), that his grandpa Nathan Green had come from "Withville", Virginia. There not being any Worth County or Withville in Virginia I assume this was Wytheville in Wythe County. An older great aunt told about our Greens coming frm England to Alexandria, Virginia. That they tore down a house in England, shipped it over and rebuilt it in Alexandria. Nathaniel Green married Charlotte Woolf in Clay County, Indiana. I did find a family sheet on Nathanile Green and Charlotte Woolf that named his parents as James Green and Jan/Jane ? I found information on a James and Jane Green in Alexandria but have not been able to prove that Nathaniel Green was their son. Can anyone out there help me? Harold Wayne Green

I wanted to thank you for the above message. As a fellow list member, I did not agree with your earlier concerns, although I certainly appreciate how time consuming it is to read all the emails. But I wanted to express my admiration and respect for your willingness to hear and respond to the feedback of other members. You may well have made internet history by being so reflective - since most people just seem to walk away in anger. I wonder how different things would be everywhere if each of us followed your lead of "looking in the mirror". Thank you. I am glad you are on this list and hope you will stay with us. 1. [GREEN-L] Robert Green connection to Thomas "Seagull" Green families.
    2. Hi Group, I have been looking for the connection between these two Green lines for some time, and just read on page 82 & 83 of Volume 35 of the Virginia Historical Magazine one way that they were connected. Abraham Armstead Green, the son of Abraham and Martha Armstead Green, was married to Eliza Aubion Cocke, who was the daughter of James Powell Cocke and Polly Lewis. James Powell Cocke was the son of Chastain Cocke and his wife Judith Archer, and his brother, also named James Powell Cocke, who was married to Martha Archer, had a daughter named Martha Cocke who married Major Moses Green Peyton, who was the son of Julia Amanda Green and General Bernard Peyton. Julia Amanda Green was the daughter of Moses Green and Fanny Richards, and Moses Green was the son of Col. John Green and Susannah Blackwell. And finally, Col. John Green was the son of Robert Green born 1695. I was looking for a connection between the two families in the early 1600's, but you take what you can find! Hope this helps someone. Tom Green

I have information from Keith Anderson on this line, but have a controversy about there being a son of Meshacks named JOHN GREEN b. abt 1800 Married to REBECCA. This is extremely important to my line and my research. If you could shed any light would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Woody King >> Hi Woody, Yes, we have just been talking about Meshack Green the past week. 1. [GREEN-L] Re: Ann Willis Green connection to George Washington - VA.
    2. In a message dated 98-09-07 10:23:56 EDT, you write: << These are excerpts of the email I got from this woman I told you about. Are you familiar with these lines? She has Duff Green married to a ? Barbour, Ann Waller and Mildred Washington, with, like I mentioned last night, William Green (b. 1762- d. 1835) being the son of Mildred Washington. Susan >> Hi Susan, It is a little more complicated than your friend tells you. Duff Green married at least twice, first to a Miss. Balbour (Balfore) who died and then he married in about 1750 to Ann Willis, born September 14, 1731, who was the daughter of Col. Henry Willis the founder of Fredericksburg, Va. The Col. was married three times, first to Ann Alexander Smith in 1714, and after her death, Col. Henry Willis married Mildred Howell in 1726, who had been previously married to Dr. John Brown. These were the parents of Ann Willis who married Duff Green. When Mildred Howell died, Col. Henry Willis married for the third time in 1733 to Mildred Warner Washington, who had been previouly married to Roger Gregory. Mildred Warner Washington was the daughter of Capt. Lawrence Washington and his wife Mildred Warner. Capt. Lawrence Washington was the brother of Capt. Augustine Washington, the father of President George Washington. There is a lot of confusion and mis-information about these three wives of Col. Henry Willis, and many researchers believe that the last two wives were sisters, but I have not found that to be true. There are also those who believe that Ann Willis was the daughter of the last wife, but the dates don't confirm this. I will post this to the list, as I am sure others will want to add their info. 1. [GREEN-L] Sherwood Green NC/TN
    2. Greg Gonzales
    3. Not far from where I live south of Nashville, TN is a fine old home with a marker in front yard titled "Sherwood Green". A history of the town of Nolensville states that the log and frame home was built by Sherwood Green (1766-1840). It appears that there are graves in the side yard. It states that Sherwood came through the Cumberland Gap with a surveying crew before TN became a state. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Green of Warren Co., NC. He was paid for his work by the government with land grants amounting to thousands of acres. Green came to the area with William and Sarah Nolen and the Colonel William Christmas family. Besides building the 2 story cedar log house, Green built 17 log cabins for his slaves with the old cedar log kitchen, the smoke house and one slave house still standing ( as of 1989). In 1800, Green married Martha Christmas (1784-1828). Sherwood learned his surveying skills from Colonel Christmas who became Surveyor General of Tennessee. The Greens had 9 sons and 2 daughters. In 1829, Sherwood married Mary Ozburn Johnson and they had one son, Edward J. Green (1830-1901). Upon his death, Sherwood left each of his sons 750 acres with Edward inheriting the home. Edward fought for the Confederacy. The Green family was stil living in this home into the 1980s and may still be living there today. Although I do not know of any connection to my Green line, I offer this in the hopes that it will help someone and that one of these days more information on my Hardin Otha Green (1820-1909) NC/TN/Lubbock,TX may surface. The information presented here comes solely from a summary derived from a history of Nolensville, TN. Greg Gonzales

    2. In a message dated 98-09-07 10:52:52 EDT, you write: << believe that is what I said but guess it didn't get to Green-L. Above info from CD #15 I rather thought that Lewis Green was son of Peter Green b. ca 1600 was in VA by 1639. Boddie had said he had a son Lewis Green and others have said no but Peter and Lewis names run through out these two lines, and not Edward but there was a Thomas Green listed on records same time as Peter Green. Louise >> Hi Louise, We are on the same page, just looking at the info differently. I show that Peter Green who died in 1745, was the brother of Lewis Green, Jr. Both were brothers of the youngest sibling, William Green, who died in 1749. The children and grandchildren of this William Green are the ones we see pop up in the late 1700's. I keep attempting to connect this family to the Thomas "Seagull" Green line, since Lewis Green is mentioned in that line several times. Did you see the message from David Green, where he believed that Susannah Green was the daughter of Lewis Green, Sr. not Lewis Green, Jr. as I posted? David has done a lot more research that I on this family, so I trust his opinion over mine. I was just looking at the dates to estimate that she was a daughter of Lewis Green, Jr.

    1. [GREEN-L] Robert Green to Nancy Greene
    2. Jeni Huffstedtler
    3. Hi Everyone, I havve posted to the Genforum wesite recently about Robert Greene from Eng/Ire/Culpepper County, VA. I have reasn to believe that my ancestor, Nancy Agnes Greene, may be related to Robert, his father William, and Robert's seven sons. Back in the 70s, my great great uncle's daughter, Sherry, put together a genealogy packet on the Lowe's. the Phillips's, and the Greene's. The last Greene she had was Nancy, who married John Lowe in 1818 in Blount County, TN. She included a substantial little history about Robert Greene and his father, and included limited information about his sons and their wives. Robert was born in 1695, so I am assuming that he married Eleanor Dunn in the eyars between 1715 and 1730, and had children with her in that general time frame. But Nancy was not born until 1790-1800. I have no clue which of those seven sons she might be descended from, and I am very anxious to find out! If anyone has any information about this line and Robert's grandchildren and great grandchildren, I would love to know how Nancy fits in on the tree. I have very little information, but I would be happy to share it if anyone is interested. Thanks! Jeni Huffstedtler 278 38th Avenue, North Nashville, TN 37209

    2. I am looking for the marriage date and other info on the above couple. Was this Samuel HOOD a relative of Robert and Elizabeth HOOD of Greene Co. TN? Per the IGI, Samuel was born ca 1773. Supposedly he and Rachel lived in Greene Co. TN but I haven't found any evidence of this other than the IGI. They supposedly had a daughter named Evelyn, born in 1799 in Greene Co. TN (per the IGI). I'd appreciate any help with this. Vickie Elam White

I Let JHAWK do my local research since he writes a column for the local paper and is related to everyone within 50 miles (G). Almost every day there is a Green in the Obit. area of our local paper. Sometimes I type these in since there are usually dates, parents, brothers/sisters, maiden names, etc. Most of you know I am not a typist so I usually don't type them in. If you want to see Green Ancestry then subscribe to the (Cheap) "Lenoir News Topic", Lenoir NC. You will also be able to read JHAWK's column once a week (He has a real name). Roger Greene is one of the first Greenes to appear in Virginia, but I have not seen much info about him. Tom Green

Capt. Richard Hill, born 1720, married Margery Gilliam, the daughter of William Gilliam, born 1704, who married Susanna Green, the daughter of Lewis Green, Jr. born about 1680, who married Frances Gilliam, the sister of William Gilliam. Is that clear as mud?? I have a 1980 letter from Ruth Phillips that says that William Gilliam was the brother-in-law of Lewis Green who married Frances ( ? ). From this tid-bit, and the names of these families that everyone has posted, this is my opinion of how they fit together. Lewis Green, Jr. is shows as the son of Lewis Green born about 1639 in Prince George County, Virginia, who MAY have been the son, or brother, of Edward Green, who was the son of Thomas Green. I would love to hear everyone's opinion of how these families fit together. Tom Green
