Fellow Green Gene's, Just a brief note to share what I think is exciting news. I just posted my Green line and within minutes had a "lost cousin" e-m me to say we not only share the same Green's but are double cousins through another connecting line. Wonderful! Isn't this genealogy thing exciting and a lot of fun? Brenda Jo
Dear Bob, Nathan, Jim, Rob, Charles & J R - I have not attempted yet to derive a lineage for Shad Sr., or determine the nature of the relationship between the two younger Shadracks. Nor have I attempted to determine with certainty whom their wives were, although I have some evidence for the choices I list below. Also, be aware that I have not listed a possible eldest son for the Shadrack who dies before 1820 who is out on his own by that date, nor have I done a complete analysis of the descendants of the children of either Shadrack. Also not addressed is the young girl in the 1830 census -- see the Evidence for notes on this situation. Here goes! First the Shad who dies before 1820: 1-- Shadrack GREEN (b. 1755-1775, d. 1800-1810) sp- Nancy (either GAGE or JONES?) Taking the suggestion of Betty and posting my line of Green's, up to and including my immediate family. Some or most of this may be repetitive but please bear with it as it may help someone. I visited your research facility at Rice University some months back, after seeing that Jane Cook was said to have been a niece of General Nathaniel Greene. At the time you did not have any documentation of this relationship, and I have not found any connection. Have you found anything new on this possible connection of these two famous families? I noted on your Web Page that you mention the possible connection, and I wondered if you had found anything new?? You probably know that Jean "Jennie" Strahan was married to Rev. William Cook, Jr., born 1724 in Virginia, died 1791, a prominant Baptist minister of the day. He was the son of William Cook, Sr. who married Naomy Davis, born in Scotland. I wonder about this Davis family. If you have any additional info on this family, I would appreciate notification. Best Regards, Tom Green TBGreen3@aol.com
Hi Lisa, Thanks for sending me the Davis web site address, http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~pjdavis/gene.htm I visited the site and as you probably noticed Jennie Strahan , the grandmother of Jefferson Davis, is said to have been related to Gen. Nathaniel Greene. I have seen this statement several times, and did visit the Jefferson Davis "room" at Rice University, but did not find any proof of this relationship. As you know, Jane Cook was the mother of Jefferson Davis, and her father was Rev. William Cook, born 1724 in Virginia, and died in 1791. He married Jean "Jennie" Strahan (or Simplson) in 1756. She died in Mississippi in 1845, but I have not found any connection to the family of General Nathaniel Greene. The father of the General was married 3 times, so I guess there are a number of possible connections, but I have not found any. The only POSSIBLE connection I see, is that this family lived in the same area of Mississippi where Col. Thomas Marston Green built his plantation home, Springfield, north of Natchez, Mississippi. Jane Cook also died near Vicksburg, Mississippi where Duff Green built a plantation home that still stands today. Duff Green descended from Robert Green, born 1695, and Col. Thomas M. Green descended from Thomas "Seagull" Green family, and I have not found a connection between these two families and that of Gen. Nathaniel Greene, but you never know. Please let me know if you find a connection between the family of Jefferson Davis and Gen. Nathaniel Greene. Tom Green TBGreen3@aol.com

Richard Green, born 1740, died about 1810, was the son of Jeremiah Green, born about 1705 in Hunterdon, New Jersy, who married Hannah Hunt, born about 1719. This Jeremiah Green was the first of his family to come to what was called Jersey Settlement on the Yadkin River near present day Sallsbury, NC. Jeremiah Green was the son of Judge William Green, born about 1671 in England, who married Joanna Reeder in 1692 in New York. This couple built the first brick home in the area in about 1717, and the home still stands on the campus of Trenton College. There is no proof, but it is believed that Richard Green married Eleanor Sullivan, born between 1740 and 1750, died before 1817, was the daughter of Edward E. Sullivan who died February 27, 1794. The story is that Edward Sullivan brought his coffin with him when the family migrated to North Carolina made from a Poplar Tree, and was the first to be buried in the new home of these pioners. This couple joined the Jersey Baptist Church January 2, 1785. You also asked about their son, Amos Green born 1778, died January 6, 1857 in Georgia, who married Elizabeth Searcy who died October 13, 1854 in Georgia. I do not show a brother named Andrew Jackson Green. This family was an important family in old Rowan County, NC in the early days, and there are many researchers on the Green "list" who research this family, and I will post this reply to the Green list in case you wish additional info on this family. Good Luck in your search! Tom Green TBGreen3@aol.com

In a message dated 98-09-15 23:13:11 EDT, you write: << This is not my Green family, so I can provide no other insight into these relationships. I did find it interesting that the surname was spelled differently in the Diary entries. >> Hi Dick, Thanks for posting the info about the family of General Nathaniel Greene. The General died soon after the war ended, and Catharine LIttlefield Green made many trips between her estate near Savannah, Georgia and her family home in New England. These entires you have found deal with her travels with her children and their education. The General has spent his own money to finance the war, as well as his credit, so after his death, Catharine Littlefield Greene had to make many trips to meet with Congress in an attempt to receive re-payment for what her husband had spent. Catharine did not like to travel by sea, since she had spent her early days on Block Island in Rhode Island, so she and her children went north by land on several trips. Catharine was also a business partner with Ely Whitney after he invented the cotton gin in her home, and the gins were made in New England, so Catharine made a number of trips regarding their cotton gin business. I love the stories about our ancestors, and appreciate you posting the info. Tom Green
In a message dated 98-09-15 10:27:04 EDT, you write: << Tom, in which county was Robert Green living? Are you sure he is the same Robert Green that was in the Revolution, you realize if he was born in 1695, he would have been over 80 during the Revolutionary War? Also what do you know about his son John Green? Louise >> Hi Louise, The first Robert Green, born 1695, did not fight in the American Revolution, as he died in 1748 in Orange County, Virginia. His son, Col. John Green formed a division in Culpeper County, Va. and covered the retreat of General Nathaniel Greene at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse March 15, 1781. He died November 18, 1793 in Culpeper County, Va., but his body was moved to Arlington Cemetery. Some of the other younger sons probably also fought in the Revolition, as did some of the grandsons of the older sons. Tom Green

Does anyone have any GREENs in their lists who were of Cherokee ancestry and who were soldiers in the Civil War on the Confederate side? Specifically, I am interested in Cherokees who fought in the Cherokee Braves unit (Stand Watie's regiments) as volunteers, in 1861. But if you have Green's in your lines from Tennessee who had some Indian blood and who were considered full or part bloods then contact me ASAP. Looking for parents and siblings of Willis Geo Green b. 1855. He lived in White County Tennessee, maybe in the city of Sparta, 1977 - 1986. It is possible he was born there. He married Rachel E. Hi Bill, You sent me a message some time ago asking about the identity of this Thomas Green since he is reported to have served as an officer at the Battle of Monmouth. I have not attempted to locate the military record of this Thomas Green, but the idea is good, and might give some info on the family. If you find anything please let me know. I have wanted for years to connect the family of General Tom Green of Texas with the Seagull Green family, but have not done so to date. Just in case you did not know, the sons of Robert Green, born 1695, also fought in many of the same battles of the American Revolution, so you may find the name of John Green, one of Robert Green's sons in the military records. Good luck! Tom Green
Hi Susie, My guess is that this was a grandson of Thomas "The Seagull" Green. His son, Thomas, born about 1665, married Elizabeth Marston, the daughter of Judge Thomas Marston and his wife Elizabeth Marvell. This was a prominant family in early Virginia, and they named two of their sons Marston. One son was named Marston Green, born about 1730, who married Elizabeth Apperson, and they were the parents of Col. Grief Green. With the lack of standerdized spelling in this period, I have seen the name spelled several different ways. The other son given this name was, Col. Thomas Marston Green, born November 19, 1723, who married Martha Wills in 1752. This couple names a son Thomas Marston Green, also named a daughter Elizabeth Marston Green. They also named a son Henry Marston Green, so as you can see, the possibility of a Maston Green descending from this family in the 1800 appears quiet possible. Just to give you another example of how a name changed spelling in this family; Thomas "Seagull" Green married Elizabeth Filmer, and one of their sons, William Green, named a son Filmer Green born about 1742. Walker. Filmer Green had a son by the same name, but it was spelled Philmore Green. By the way, I have also seen the name of Marston shown as the middle name of William Green, the son of Thomas "Seagull" Green. Hope this helps! Tom Green
