Hi researchers, I have an assortment of real genealogy treasures and would love to have them be my family. Since they are not, how about helping me find a fellow researcher that is related. I will be putting this on the following lists: NORCAL, SOCAL, GREEN, BLACK, MISSOURI, HITCHCOCK and BOZEMAN. My daughter recently bought a home of a deceased elderly woman, in Ventura California. As she was storing suitcases in the attic she found a box of the listed items. She ask the realtor to see if the sellers wanted the items and he said they didn't want anything, so, here we go! A beautiful High School Diploma from Jacksonville Indiana for Metta A. HANNA, dated May 14, 1922. It is 16" high and 22" long and very decorative. It is signed by the following people. E.G. Copeland Superintendent A.E. Messick Principle G.W. Mitchelle President Board of Education L.E. Hochstetler Secretary Board of Education Walter E. Brissele Treasure Board of Education There is a total of 10 State of Indiana, Crawford County, Teacher Licenses for Willa O. JOHNSON. Some are issued for 12 months and some for 24 months. Evidently Willa and other teachers had to take a proficiency exam because the grades are shown for each subject tested. These are very attractive documents and are all signed by the incumbent County Supervisor. They are dated and signed by the County Supervisor as follows: 1. 1887 J.W. Goldman 2. 1889 " " 3. 1890 " " 4. 1891 " " 5. 1892 J.F. Zimmerman 6. 1894 J.R. Duffin 7. 1895 James R. Duffin 8. 1903, Apr. 24 Chas. A Robertson 9. 1903, May 30 " " " 10. 1903, Aug. 29 Stuart A. Beals Don't ask why there were three issued so close together in 1903! There are eight Wright Township, Greene County, Indiana report cards for Metta HANNA. All are signed by either S.C. Hanna or Willie or Willa Hanna who I assume to be Metta's parents. I will list them below as grade, year, teacher and first name of parent who signed. 1 1915 Bertha Moss Willie none none Willie 3 1918 Ruby Moore Willie 4 1918 M.G. Watson S.C. 5 1920 Douglas Hudson Willie 6 1922 M.G Watson Willie 8 1924 Fannie Dayhoff S.C. Rather sad, the 8th grade report card dated 1923/24 was unsigned my either parent for the last quarter. I was rapped in a note the reads, "Mother died Aug. 18, 1923. She was burried Aug.20, 1923. There were 162 cars at the grave yard." Buried as written by Metta. There are 3 letters and 8 postcards dated in 1947. They are addressed to Mrs. Bensten/Metta Bensten. All are signed mom, dad or mom and dad. They are all addressed to 558 E. Meta St., Ventura, California. Also, there are 18 post cards and 2 letters, dated 1947/48, to the same address but addressed to Mr. and Mrs Benny Benson/Mrs. Metta Benson, Mrs Metta A. Benson and Mr. and Mrs. T.L. Benson. All of these letters were signed mom, dad or both. Last, one letter to Mrs. Metta Benson, % S.C. Hanna, Jacksonville, Indiana and signed Bob. A post card photo of a young boy and girl about 6 and 4 years old. Appears to be turn of the century. A wonderful photo of 4-men and 4-women. Three of the men and women appear to be in their 50's and the other man and woman in their 70's. They appear as four married couples. The photo looks as if it was taken in the 1920's or 30's. No name anywhere. Size = 8" high and 10 " long. Last, an old Sunday Service Program from the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Indiana. Names mentioned in the program are Clarence E. Baker, Pastor. Ray Price, Sunday School Superintendent. Mrs. Morse, Dr. Osterholm and Margaret and Chester Jump, Missionaries to Vanga, Belgian Congo. Any help finding a rightful owner to these items and proving themselves so, Will be greatly appreciated. Del Del Black In the beautiful Tehachapi Mountains of California
Okay. I found something substantial in Cincinnati, Ohio in the late 1850s and early 1860s. There was a Russell Green, Solomon Green (physician), William Green all living on Front Street. In 1863 I found our long lost Jane Armstrong and her daughter, Jenny Armstrong, living or working next to this family of Greens. Jane was listed as a servant per the city directory. The addresses are as follows: Russell Green, 1523 E. Front, Solomon L. Green, physician, 1524 E. Front, William Green, 1521 E. Front, and my Jane Armstrong, servant, 1525 E. Front. Her daughter, Jenny, or a close relative named Jenny, appears to be living at 236 W. 6th. I also found a Mrs. A.M. Green living at 60 W. 6th and our elusive John Green (not John A. Green) living at 61 W. 6th. The entry for Jenny's occupation reads as follows: Armstrong, Jenny b. h. 236 W. 6th (could be 266 W. 6th, hard to read). Since Jenny is too young to be working in 1863 I presume it is a relative named Jenny. In no other year has these Armstrong listings shown up. Does anyone recognize this Green family? It is the first time I have actually found any Greens connected to my Jane Armstrong besides her husband, Matthew Green, and I would appreciate it very much if someone could look up any census information on these Greens. They appear to be in the 17th Ward of Cincinnati in 1870. I don't know what ward this would be in the 1860 or the 1850 censuses. -- Tim mailto:phwalls@prodigy.net Researching MCCLINTOCK, ARMSTRONG, GREEN, all of Irish descent, especially County Tyrone (MCCLINTOCK, ARMSTRONG) and Co. I just joined the list yesterday and am hoping to find the family of Lucucitha (Green) Mattingly Riggs. Lucucitha was born abt 1814 perhaps in Marion County, KY. I found recently that she was adopted by Richard Charles MATTINGLY (the line I had been trying to find her through), but was born to Mortimer GREEN. I have her mother listed as Lucinda. I am trying to find her birth parents, info about them, and maybe other family. I have heard that they maybe were among the Maryland Catholics that migrated to KY. I would appreciate any help on this that you could give me. In a message dated 9-25-98 Tom Green writes: <> Tom, I'm not sure if I've communicated with you before, but I've noticed reading all the messages on the Green List that you have a great deal of information and knowledge about the Green family. I'm hoping that you could give me a clue on the search for my ancestor. I am looking for information on a Ruth Green. We have no idea where or when she was born, although we believe it was somewhere around 1840. We do know that she was married to George Parsons sometime prior to 1865 (the date their first child was born). Her first child was born in Rowan (now Guilford) County, North Carolina. We are desperately searching for her parents, siblings, birthdate, marriage date, basically any information at all. What I've listed is all the information we have for her. Our research on our Parsons line has stalled with George Parsons and Ruth Green. If they followed the naming patterns of the time, chances are her parents would have been William and Mary (but, again, that's ONLY if they followed the naming patterns). We are hoping that if we can pin down when they were married and where, we can break open this HUGE brickwall we've come to. Any help on any Ruth Green born between 1830 and 1850 you may have in your data base would be extremely appreciated. Thank you for your time. Krys (Parsons) Abrao
In a message dated 98-09-24 13:20:06 EDT, you write: << I am a descendant of Phillippa Greene, who married Caleb Carr, the nephew of the governor of Rhode Island. >> Hi Alix, When you get a chance, I would appreciate receiving what data you have on your family. I like to keep my computer updated with as much Green data as possible. I show that Phillippa Greene (1658-1690), was the daughter of Major John Greene, born before August 15, 1620 and his wife Amy Almy. Major John Greene was the son of Surgeon John Greene, born February 9, 1595, and his wife Joan Tattersall. I only show one child, Merebath Carr, for Phillippa Greene and her husband, Caleb Carr (1657-1690), and I show that Merebath Carr married Jobe Greene (1751-1838), the son of Charles and Eleanor Greene. I show that Charles Greene was the son of James and Rebecca Cahoone Greene. I show that James Greene was the son of Lt. John Clarke Greene, born June 16, 1651, and his wife Abigail D. Wardwell. Lt. John Clarke Greene was the son of John Greene of Quidnessett. Do you descend from Merebath Carr and her husband Jobe Greene? If so you are directly related to both Surgeon John Green and John Greene of Quisnessett who were cousins, and both descended from Robert Greene of Gillingham. John Greene of Quidnessett descended from John Green the son of Robert of Gillingham, and Surgeon John Greene descended from Richard Greene, the son of Robert Greene of Gillingham. The line back from Robert Greene of Gillingham to Sir Henry Greene is where the names and documentation are questionable. Some researchers believe that Robert Greene was the son of John "The Fugitive" Greene, born about 1448, and that John was the son of Thomas Greene born about 1420, who was the son of Thomas Greene born about 1397, who was the son of Sir Henry Greene, beheaded in 1399. There are many differing opinions on this data, and I will post this message to the list so others can give you their opinion. Tom Green
Hi Everyone, For those of you who already knew about this ftp site, just skip over this message. The University of Minnesota conducted a study for sociology purposes and published a 1% sampling of the 1880 census. It's kind of tricky getting at the data, but here are the Greens who they used for their study. I won't post any more names because there are simply too many. Just go to the link. There are many more listed. Here's how to extract the data if you see a name or state that looks promising: 1. Go to this link (index): ftp://ftp.genealogy.org/pub/1880/index/ 2. Click on G 3. Click on "280" link. Scroll down part way when the page loads. 4. Write down the state and the three sets of corresponding numbers. I'm going to use "Allen Green for an example." GREEN ALLEN SC/0070/0027/090676 5. Hit the back button on your browser. 6. Go to the top of the page and click on "Up to higher level directory". 7. Go to the top of the index page and click on "Up to higher level directory" again. 8. You should be on the state code page. Click on the state. As per example, I'm going to click on SC. 9. That will take you to the four digit numbers page. Find the four digit number that corresponds to the four digit number just to the right of the state code of the number you wrote down. As per example, we want "0070". 10. Click on the four digit number that matches the middle number of what you wrote down. As per example, we will click on "0027". 11. Now click on the six digit number that matches the rightmost number that you wrote down. As per example, we will click on "090676". 12. And this is how the actual data from the 1880 census will appear: ANDERSON, SC Enum. Dist. 27 Reel 1219 Page 185 Date: 06/14 -- GREEN, LYMUS B M 37 Head M South Carolina South Carolina South Carolina GREEN, BINA B F 29 Wife M South Carolina South Carolina South Carolina GREEN, WILLIE B M 12 Child S South Carolina South Carolina South Carolina GREEN, JANE B F 14 Child S South Carolina South Carolina South Carolina GREEN, HATTIE B F 10 Child S South Carolina South Carolina South Carolina GREEN, ALLEN B M 3 Child S South Carolina South Carolina South Carolina GILLARD, HESTER B F 25 Res. employee S South Carolina South Carolina Now to get back to the next Green listing. 1. Hit the back button on your browser. 2. Hit "Up to higher level directory" on THREE successive pages until you get back to the state code page. 3. Go down to the BOTTOM of the state code page. That will bring up the links for the index where the letters are. Click on "index". 4. Click on "G" and start with the next Green you are interested in (code 280 OR 281). REMEMBER that when you've looked at all the Greens on the "280" entry, you will have to back up and look at "281". There are no more Greens listed after the "281" page. I hope this proves useful to someone. These ftp sites are a pain and the first time I came here I was lost, but I messed around with it until I figured out what to do. I hope I didn't hopelessly confuse any of you. I could possibly tell you a little more but it would be just too confusing and I'm not that great at it myself! Good luck! Remember that this is approximately only 1% of all the Green(e)s that were on the 1880 census, so there are lots more out there - somewhere! Alice The beginning of the actual names looks like this and there are lots, lots more. GREEN ? ALBERT G IL/1350/0154/018287 GREEN ? BEN F MO/0270/0029/050081 GREEN ? Hi--Thought it was about time I posted my queries, again. Any help would be More than welcome-- Mary E. GREEN b 25 Dec 1939 married Richard LEIGH b 11 May 1836. I don't know who their parents are but here are the Humphrey connections: In the 1850 census of Carroll Co., TN, Mary Green is listed in the home of Elizabeth Humphrey a 60 year old widow born in NC. She had the following children: Enoch b c1818, Elizabeth b c1823, Ann b c1825, Sarah b c1827, Pheby b c1828, William b c1829, Malinda b c1832, Joseph b c1833 and Marion b c1834. The children were possibly born in GA with the last two possibly being born in TN. I was told that Elizabeth came to Carroll Co., TN before 1833 and she was a widow in the 1840 census also. She deeded her land in TN to her son Enoch, and the son Joseph may have married in 1859. Mary Green had a brother named Joseph. A Joseph Green married Martha Humphrey in Madison Co., TN 11 Oct 1852. Richard Leigh's parents may have been Richard Leigh b c1804 SC d Dec 1859 and Patsey or Martha Humphrey b c1809 NC d Jan 1860. They both died in Carroll Co., TN of pneumonia. Their children were Emeline, Adeline, Hildra, Martha, Elizabeth, Richard, Nancy, James, William, Laodicia and Sarah. Thank you so much. Matilda Green's father was Angus Green. She was born Dec. 27, 1820, in Hope, Warren Co., NJ. She married Jacob H. Brands, b. 1818, supposedly from New Jersey as well, and they lived in Blairstown between 1840 and 1850. Their children were Mary G. Brands (b. 1843), David Allen (b/d, 1849), Aaron R. (b/d 1840), Sarah Matilda (b. 1845) and Charles Austin (b. 1850). Any information? Sandy
I'm interested in parents and siblings of Caleb and Mary Oaks Green(e), both from CT. Caleb was born in 1792 and died July 13, 1840 in Cherry Valley, OH. Mary died in LaSalle City, IL at age 88. They had 12 children: William O., b. 1816 in Bridgetown, Oneida County, NY., m. Jane Krum 1838, and d. April 4, 1896 in West Andover, OH ; Perry, b. April 15, 1827 in Monroe County, NY, m. Marie Clark, and d. 189, buried Cherry Valley, OH; Lois Green Clark of Ottawa, IL; Marilla Green Gay; Eveline L. Chapman; Leander Green; Dewitt Green of Wyoming; Allen J. Green, d. 1847 in Indiana (1 child with Emma Cleveland Green); Mary Ann Green Brower or Brown; A. N. Green m. Rebecca Mather or Mathews; H. S. Green maybe m. Sarah J. Wood and Charles D. Green d. in La Honda, CA (had been in Mexican War). My line is from William O. and Jane Krum Greene's son, Jay who married, then left Malinda Tisch after having 4 sons who lived into adulthood and other babies who didn't survive. Jay's brother William Marcellus Greene married Urilla Tisch, Malinda's sister. Brother Albert Greene married Alice Sweet and lived in Norwalk, OH when his father made out his will in the 1890's. Does anyone know if Albert and Alice had children? Their sister Sarah O. married Algernon Kingsley. She died in 1921 and he in 1925. They are buried in West Andover, OH Cemetery near other Kingsleys, but I do not know if they had children. Another sister Victoria married J. C. Williams in 1863 and they had a daughter Josephine Winch. Also listed in Wm. O.'s will were 3 grandchildren: Ruthie, Krum, and Corral Dockery. There are other Green(e)s in the Cherry Valley, West Andover, and Hickock Cemeteries, but I don't know the connections. If anyone is interested, I'll post the names and dates I could read. Thanks. Judge Willilam Green of NJ had a son named William who married Lydia Armitage. Meshack Green is not the son of Jeremiah and Hannah (Hunt) Green. He is the son of Jeremiah and Rachel (_____) Green. Given the names Jeremiah there may be a connection, but does anyone know for sure? John Hawkins

The Willis Green desc. of Duff Green has many times been confused with Wills Green son of Stephen Green Jr., son of Stephen Green Sr. and His wife Jemima Scott of Madison County. Will Green of the latter family line was a Representative from Grayson County, KY. This Willis Green was orphaned at an early age and his grandfather, Stephen, and Uncle Martin Green were made his guardian. He was injured in battle. After his service he went on to New Orleans and then returned to become an entrepenuer in Grayson Co., Ky, where he built his home at the Falls of Rough. While there he became a congressman for both Grayson and Breckenridge Co., KY He had no children but took care of neices and nephews after the death of his brother Morgan. Later, his nephew Lafayette, inherited his vast holdings in Grayson County and the family home at Falls of Rough. This Willis Green married Ann Allen 24 Dec. 1818 in Shelby Co., Ky. Prior to his death he moved to Corpus Christy, Texas, where he was living when he died. His nephew, later returned his body to Canehill Cemetery in Louisville where he is buried. This Willis Green was born 1795 Madison Co., KY and died 20 Jun 1862 in Corpus Christy, Texas and is buried at Canehill Cemetery, where his wife is also buried. --Hugh Ridenour has written a very interesting Biography of the above Willis Green called The Greens of Falls of Rough. Dear Tom and Darrell, and others interested in the early Greenes: Well over three years ago, when I first joined AOL, I explored their genealogy files that can be downloaded. As a curiosity, I downloaded a very extensive file on the de Boketons, etc. I found it interesting, albeit quite short of sourcing and documentation. I did, however, put it into my word processor and massage the material so that it printed cleanly on the page and was much more readable. I will be glad to forward that version of the file to anyone who would like to receive it. I will collect requests for a few days and then send it out. Allan E. Green - still looking for the parents of Clark Dodge Green, born supposedly in Deerfield, Franklin, MA in 1816.

Subject: [OKROOTS-L] GREEN, GREENLEE, NABOURS, LAWSON Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 11:47:48 EDT From: WendyGayle@aol.com To: OKROOTS-L@rootsweb.com My grandmother Eugenia Evelyn Debra (Jean) GREEN was born in Stidham, McIntosh, OK. September 17, 1920, she died December 15, 1957 in Tulsa. Her siblings were Wallace, Betty (Rita), Leard (Leird), Hubert. I know nothing of the siblings. Her father was Charles Lewis GREEN born August 28, 1884 in ? died June 25, 1962 and mother's name was Ollie Jane LAWSON born June 23 ? died ? Some of this information came from Eugenia's bible and the rest from my mother's second husband. Eugenia married Thomas Moses GREENLEE. Thomas had a brother named Fred NABOURS, I am not sure of the spelling of last name and he had a sister named Evelyn STANKOWICH. I never knew any of these people. I have Eugenia's death certificate and it showed that she had poliomyelitis deformities (polio of the spine). I noticed that there a lot of GREEN's, NABOURS', and LAWSON's in the Greenwood Cemetary but I have no idea if they are related. ______________________________

(Some say it is Lauderdale??? but I have not seen the documentation for this). This Lewis and Elizabeth had several children which I do have their names at home (I'm at work now). One of their children is my ancestor, Lewis Green married to Esther Kilgore. Lewis was in the Revolution and died on the road to Tennessee with his daughter, Sarah Payne. My line goes on from Lewis. My maiden name was Green. >> Hi Carla, I have a little info on your Lewis A. Green, born 1710 in Prince George County, VIrginia, died August 6, 1785 in Washington County, Virginia. He served in the French and Indian War with Capt. Robert McKenzie's compnay from Dinwiddle County, Virginia. I show that he married Elizabeth "Sarah" Lauderdale born about 1730, and died after 1785 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Their son, Lewis Green born May 5, 1751, died June 10, 1853 in Kentucky. He married Ester Kilgore, but that is all I have on your line. I have not been able to connect your Lewis Green with the line I have been attempting to connect to my William Green. If he connects, it is probably through a brother of Lewis Green born about 1640, who lived in Prince George County, Virginia. This Lewis Green had at least one brother named Edward Green born about 1700, but I have not been able to identify a Lewis Green in that family. I hope this helps in some way. Tom Green
