Hi, your info from Genealogical Dict of NE Settlers re John Green of RI and his descendants prompted me to revisit my collection of Greens. In researching my maternal line of Arnolds I found that my gr gr grandfather, George E. Arnold of RI and CT connects thru 6 direct lines to three of the sons of surgeon John Green of Warwick. More Greens than Arnolds! Following are those 6 lines: 1st most direct: John (1), Thomas (2), Benjamin (3), Susannah (4) m Philip Arnold, Philip Arnold (5), Andrew Arnold (6), Philip Arnold (7) father of George E. 2nd: John (1), Thomas (2), Benjamin (3), Katherine (4) m William Green, Benjamin (5), Catherine (6) m William Searle, Catherine Searle (7) m Philip Arnold parents of George E. 3rd: John (1), Thomas (2), Welthian (3) m Thomas Fry, Mary Fry (5) m Benjamin Green, Catherine (6) m William Searle, Catherine Searle (7) m Philip Arnold parents of George E. 4th: John (1), John (2), Samuel (3), William (4) and Katherine (4), Benjamin (5), Catherine (6) m William Searle, Catherine Searle (7) m Philip Arnold parents of George E. 5th: John (1), John (2), Samuel (3), Mary (4) m Thomas Fry, Mary Fry (5) m Benjamin Green, Catherine (6) m William Searle, Catherine Searle (7) m Philip Arnold parents of George E. 5th: John (1), James (2), Elizabeth (3) m Francis Reynolds, Jabez Reynolds (4), Jabez Reynolds (5), Phoebe Reynolds (6) m Andrew Arnold, Philip Arnold (7) father of George E. I went thru this exercise for my own clarification, and decided to share the list. If anyone wants further info on any of the Greens, I'd be glad to share. Regards, Ann
Below is someone looking for Information on William Greene only he seemingly stating that William Greene Jr. is actually a George William Greene. This inquiry was found in Greene County Quires. Is there someone out there that can confirm this Data. It sure would clear up a few things on my Greene line. What is said about William Greene Jr. is correct. Wife is Ruth Hunter and the children of this couple is right on. #17 William Greene Wed Nov 19 1997 I am looking for information on William GREENE. Born August 3, 1764 in Warren County North Carolina and died 1819 in Greene County, Georgia. He married Ruth Hunter ,b September 24,1764 in Wilkes County North Carolina and d. May 15, 1826 in Greene County, Georgia. They had Lemuel, Alston Hunter, Nancy, Nathaniel, William, and Augustine. Father was George William Greene, b.1734 in Virginia and d. 1806 in Wilks County Georgia. Both father and son fought in the Revolution. It is a tradition in our family that both are cousins of General Nathaniel Greene. I have not been able to establish connection. Thanks Richard Greene

These people show up on the 1850 Federal census for New York. Neighbors of this family in the census: Note: Ages taken by this census enumerator are probably inaccurate. He did not do a good job with the ages of the people because on the 1855 New York State Census I found the children had increased by an increment of 4 years (which is correct) but some of the adults' ages had not increased by equal amounts. I believe Matthew Green here is really 21 or 22. However, I have to report what the census shows. 1850 New York Federal 1850, Clifton Park, Saratoga County, p. 493. > 17 17 Peters, William A. 35 M 500 New York > 18 Van Vrankin, Rebecca 76 F 8000 New York > 18 19 Austin, William age 40 M Farmer New York > 19 20 Smith, Charles age 25 M ?(illegible) England > Mary Smith age 24 F Ireland > William Smith age 1 M New York > Mary Smith age 1 F New York > Green, Mathew age 25 M ?(illegible) Ireland > Margaret Green age 24 F Ireland > Mary Ann age 2 F New York? Hi Tom, Saw your reply to Jann regarding "Jeremiah Green" family; hair color; and Green-Jones feud. If the family hair color is a sweeping generalization, then the "Jeremiah Green" family would fall into the "Black Green's" category. If I recall my ancestors in TN right, there was more of a mixture than one predominant color (black; brown; blond). I do not recall any red hair other than a cousin who was a "flame-haired" beauty that I totally infatuated with. As to the feud, this same "Jeremiah Green's" descendants were the guilty party along with the "Jone's". I believe I posted the following before on the "Green-Jones" feud. THE GREENE-JONES WAR - 1888 (Originally transcribed from newspaper files by the late Alton Greene, Sanger, TX) Collected and recopied from William P. Grohse files by Margaret Long Mabrey. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rogersville Herald, Apr 21, 1888 The Greenes and Jones of Hancock co got into another racket on last Sunday. It appears that while Richard, Lincoln and Tom Greene were out looking over their fields they were fired on by and ambush party, supposed to be members of the Asa Jones family, one of whom Richard killed a few months since. Tom Greene was badly wounded in one of his arms while his brothers received no further injury than to have their clothes torn by some of the bullets. ibid, May 5, 1888... Lee Valley (Apr 30) The Jones and Greenes trouble seems to have quelled for the present, as I do not hear any fresh outburst from either party. Thos Greene is convalescent with his arm but the Physicians do not think it will have to be amputated. ibid, June 9, 1888... "News from the start of the war" (Mooresburg 6/6) Lewis Moore, one of the Hancock co Warriors, passed through this place on Monday of this week; he was at Etter Brothers and bought some oysters and ate them at the store, and while there, gave an account of the killing of Devault in Hancock co last week. He says Devault acted traitor with Jones and his friends and that was the cause of him being killed. Dr Yoe of this place went over the mountain to Hancock co, to amputate and arm for one of the Greenes who had his arm badly broken by some of the warriors over there, and on the way back found a man by the roadside, dead. Dr Yoe stopped at Joshua Davis' and informed him of the fact and Mr Davis, being a Magistrate, summoned Dr. Yoe and a jury and held a post mortem examination over the dead body. Dr Yoe has abandoned his practice in Hancock for the present. (* Joshua Davis married Nellie Brewer, dau of Isham, son of Joab, Jr. by W.P. Grohse) ibid, News from Camilla, June 9, 1888 On the 2nd inst. the Jones party, nine or ten in number, surrounded Mr Hamp Greene's house. About the dawn of day the Greenes discovered the Jones party and sending their wives and children out, both parties began firing at about the same time.... supposed to have been about 300 shots shots fired in succession on both sides, several shot through the clothes but none seriously wounded but one little boy that had crawled under the bed for protection, got shot through just above the hips and died last Tuesday. The Sheriff of Hancock co., Geo. Wilburn and James Brooks and others, thirty-six in number came to arrest the Jones crowd, but all had absconded but one, H. F. Ferrell; they took him to Sneedville jail to lay over until court. Think is we had more such men as Sheriff Drinnon, Brooks, and Wilburn, we would have better times, which if ever needed, it is now. ibid, June 16, 1888... The fuss between the Greenes and Jones is abating some. I have been informed that they stacked their arms. The Greene side went and gave up their arms last Monday and on Tuesday following, a posse of about 60 men started in search of the other side. News came they had found one and arrested one. No other later reliable news at present, but it is thought that the Jones will relent and let civil law decide the trouble between them. The writers opinion opinion is that both sides will finally submit to whatever is right and live under the reign of the civil law instead of the hail of bullets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ B. Seal, reporter. THE GREENE-JONES WAR - 1889/1890 (Originally transcribed from newspaper files by the late Alton Greene, Sanger, TX) Collected and recopied from William P. Grohse files by Margaret Long Mabrey. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rogersville Herald, November 6, 1889 MURDER IN HANCOCK COUNTY Hamp Greene kills his nephew, James Greene - Another chapter in the Jones- Greene war. News reaches us of another murder in our neighbor county - Hancock, which occurred in Livesay's store at Luther P.O. Wednesday morning Oct 30. It appears that Hamp Greene belongs to the Greenes and James Greene to the Jones faction, which is not having war with each other for some time and that Hamp now had two sons in the penitentiary for killing a brother of James Greene in one of their battles, and that he was circulating a petition to the Governor asking for the pardon of his sons, and upon meeting James Greene on Wed. morning at the above named place, asked him to sign the petition, and upon his refusal to do so some hot words passed between them, and it is said Hamp Greene drew a weight upon James and threatened to strike him with it, when James drew his ever ready Smith and Wesson and began to fire upon him, and after several shots had been fired without effect, Hamp dropped the weight and raised his Winchester rifle and shot James squarely in the forehead, killing him instantly. then walked leisurely to his home without any attempt being made to arrest him, and we understand is still at large. This unhappy continuation of the Jones-Greene feud is greatly to be regretted, as it will keep up the bad name of Hancock co. abroad and seriously injure its future prosperity. ibid, May 21, 1890..... Ace Jones Surrenders Ace Jones, the leader on the Jones side, in the late Jones-Greene war in Hancock co, after scouting and evading the officers of the law for over 12 months, gave himself up last Thursday, to Deputy Sheriff Henry Davis, of the 13th District of this county, and expressed himself ready for trial upon the charge of killing Thomas J Berry of this county (Hawkins) which was preferred grabbed him, and conveyed him a prisoner to the Hancock County jail, to await trial upon charges preferred upon him there. NOTE: The killing of Berry, referred to above, took place in his meat house when he was shot by someone hidden inside. He had gone out there with his son- in-law to set his milk higher, as flood conditions had caused his milk to be ruined. ibid, Sept 24, 1890 The noted Asa Jones murder trial, after a continuance of five days, came to an end Tuesday, with the verdict of acquittal by the jury. Some of the ablest speeches listened to in the court house for several years, were made on both sides. Asa Jones will be taken back to Hancock Co, TN where he stands charged with implicity in the Jones-Greene trouble, but as we understand a compromise has been affected in these cases, he will be permitted to give bond, and thus be a free man once more. (This was the trial for the Berry murder.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ B. Seal, reporter. RGreene431@aol.com
Do you have any additional information concerning the George Green mentioned in this will? Sincerely, Douglas Anderson No I don't. That is real odd. I can't pick up anything on the children of Richard Green. I can't find them in tha land indices or deed records. William Boon and Kizziah Green must have stay there for their entire life. I did pick up a bond record on a Moses Green who was a Blacksmith. One of the Peed sons was bound to him to teach him the art of Blacksmith. There was a Spliman family there and I am trying to check out the George Green who married Judith Spilman. They are the parents of Alexander Littlepage Green. I thought maybe there might be a connection. There are still more records I need to go through in King George Co. Mell

Hi Stan: I am also sending this reply to your question as to who was the Mr. Green at Forty Mile Creek to the mailing list in case anyone else is interested. According to a book researched and published by my Uncle, Dr. Watson Kirkconnell in 1976, this is what he had to say: John Green, with his wife Mary (Davis) Green, had four sons (aged 17, 15,12,and 10) to accompany them on their1787 expedition to a new home; and twin daughters were born in 1793. The family settled at "The Forty", (Forty Mile Creek, or the Modern Grimsby, on the Lake Ontario shore 40 miles west of Niagara). John Green, like his father, was a surveyor and a road builder. He also built a saw mill on Forty Mile Creek in 1788 and a grist mill in 1789. With his own sawn timber ready available, he built himself a handsome clapboarded house, at which the Greens frequently entertained Governor John Graves Simcoe and his lady, for the families were intimate and John Green regularly accompanied the Govenor on his journeys. Mary Green was licensed to "practice medecine and surgery" and she figures in Mrs. Simcoes diary as prescribing for a ailing Simcoe child. About 1801, John Green bought land in West Flamborough Township, east of Burlington, and he appears to have moved there, giving the family name to the village of Greenville. John's brother, Adam, settled at Stoney Creek, where he first bought 100 acres on the creek and two years later was confirmed in a grant of 300 acres in Saltfleet Township as a loyalist refugee. He and his wife, Martha, had 10 children, seven being born before the trek to Canada. Rebecca Green, a sister of Adam and John, became about 1765, the second wife of Francis Glover, of Sussex County, New Jersey. She had 7 children by him and after his death in 1796, she moved to Upper Canada to join her children. John, Adam and Rebecca were the children of Samuel Green and his third wife, Hannah Wright of New Jersey. I also have information of the children of these loyalists. Helen W. Austin, Texas

I would appreciate any information concerning my family history. My grandfather, Dr. John Thompson Green (later changed to Greene) was a practicing physician in the town of Elloree, SC, for more than 60 years until his death in 1973. He lived in Bishopville, SC, as a boy, and his ancestors supposedly landed at Georgetown, SC, in the early 18th century. Ralph Green, a relative (now deceased), had been active in compiling a family history during the 1960's and 1970's. He lived in Columbia, SC. My father's cousin, Francis Green, resides in Bishopville, SC.
Hi All: I just got the index to CC, TNs Will book A from 1822-1864 approximately (it says). These are the GREEN names listed, (there are no Greene's): Aaron pgs 11-12, Moses pg 192, Davies pg 312 and David 435 I would be interested in reading these wills, if any one can send me copies, especially Moses. I am looking for the parents of Mary and Joseph Green. Mary was born in 1939, Joseph was probably born earlier. Their parents were both said to have died of yellow fever, probably around 1841. I am currently typing up this index to add to my Green info at my web site, if you are interested check later on, probably around noon. There are three pages of names. I will also put up the address where you can send for the wills if you would like. In a message dated 98-10-02 20:39:06 EDT, you write: << Well, I've been watching for many months hoping I could figure out which major Green lines had which hair color. Where did the Greens of Jersey settlement fall? I've also been trying to figure out which TN Green's were feuding with the Jones'.? Jann >> Hi Jann, I don't know the answer to all your questions, but can say that Thomas "The Seagull Green and his sons were all read headed and tall. There are numerious books that mention the height of one of his sons or grandsons as being over 6 feet tall, in fact Thomas Green the son of Seagull was suppose to be 6 ft. 6 in. tall. Most of his family went to Mississippi, first to the Natchez area. Many of this family lived in Amelia County, Virginia, and the surrounding area. I call the Jersey Settlement Greens the "Jeremiah Green" family because Jeremiah was the first of his family to leave New Jersey and migrate to North Carolina. I don't recall if this family was red headed or not. I have read about the Green - Jones feud, but don't know which family this is. As I recall, this was considered the second worst family feud in American history. I will post my response and hope others will add and correct the story. Tom Green
