Hi Listers; I am still searching for one elusive Gr Grandfather, Nathaniel Green. The information I have says he was born in Virginia in 1822 and came to Indiana in 1857. I find him in the Indiana, Clay County census in 1860, 1870 and 1880, he died in 1897. My information also says he came from Wytheville, Virginia. I have searched many hours but don't find him in Virginia in 1850. Of course I don't know if he came directly from Virginia to Indiana or stopped somewhere along the way. Some other relatives came from Virginia to Kentucky, then to Indiana. Since Wytheville is in the southern part of Virginia I thought he might have taken the same route. In the 1850 census I have found one Nathan Green living in Ballard County Kentucky, about the right age, born in Virginia. Does anyone out there know about this Nathaniel/Nathan Green from Wytheville, Virginia, or the one living in Ballard County, Kentucky, siblings, parents, or any little piece of information will be appreciated. Harold Wayne Green

Tom, Were your Greens still in Carroll Co. in 1840? Some of the given names you listed show up in John Cephas GREEN's family, but none of them are unusual, I suppose! There were at least two or three Tillmans in our family, Thomas & William occur frequently, as do Martha & Elizabeth John Cephas GREEN was b. 08 MAR 1812. According to various census schedules he was born in SC. He married Nancy T. HUCKEBA/HUCKABY, daughter of William and Sarah (Brown) Huckaby in Coweta Co., GA, in 1836. They were listed (on p. 51) in Carroll Co. on the 1840 census, though they apparently left GA around 1841. John C. Green was said to have participated in the Creek War of 1836, though I have yet to confirm it. Stories have him and his brother in law fighting in the Creek Wars, then buying land in the newly opened up federal land areas of the Creek Cessions in Alabama. His children were Samuel W. (b. ca 1837), Henry T., Thomas P., Elizabeth C., Martha Matilda, Andrew H., James Crawford, Sarah F., Lucious Leroy (my gggrandfather), Sallie J., and John C. I believe the two youngest children died at fairly early ages and that Sarah F. died as a young woman. I can follow most all the rest except Samuel W. Green. He was still living in 1870, when he was listed in Randolph Co., AL, with a wife (Martha) and two children. Have you ever come across this John Cephas GREEN or any of his children? Elisabeth

Does anyone have a woman with the maiden name of Humphrey who married a Green before 1839? They had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth b 25 Dec 1839, possibly in Greenville, Greene Co., TN. They also had a son named Joseph. The parents died of yellow fever before 1850, I believe around 1841, as there was an epidemic then. The reason I think the mother's maiden name may be Humphrey is because Mary was living with a 'close relative', Elizabeth Humphrey, in the 1850 census of Carroll Co., TN. In a message dated 98-10-07 07:31:57 EDT, you write: << I have the rest of our line in a file that I can send if you would like it. I cannot verify beyond John, but after your letter about William, I see in the LEDFORD Census Books on the Families of Haywood County that he is near my family. Do you have these books? If not I will look up names for you I have all that have been written so far. I want to get 1910 as soon as I can. Thanks in advance for any help you might give me. Susie Greene Barkley >> Hi Susie, Great to hear from you! I do recall our correspondence some time ago. I do not have the books you mention, and would love to have anything you have on William Green who died in Haywood County, NC March 2, 1837. I have visited the library in the county seat on one occassion, but did not have the time to realy do any research. I know very little about his son John Green, except a note that he may have gone to Texas to fight in the Revolution in 1836. You are probably aware that there were at least two (2) William Greens that lived in Haywood County, NC at the same time, and the children were apparently named the same. I wonder if we don't have the two families mixed together. My William Green was born February 6, 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and next appeared in Hillsboro, Orange County, NC in 1779 when he joined the Militia. He married Kezziah Patton in Hillsborough at her parents home January 9, 1781, and their first child, Thomas S. Green was born there October 24, 1781. The family moved to Burke County, NC about 1783 where most of their children were born. William Green moved his family to Haywood County, NC about 1813, but some of his children were married and did not move to Haywood County, NC. I show that your John Green was born about 1783, so he could have been born in Orange County, NC or he could have been born in Burke County, NC. I would love to have any info you have on this John Green. I descend from William Mercer Green, born about 1786 in Burke County, NC, who was the third (3rd.) son of William and Kezziah Patton Green. He married Nancy Porter in Burke County, NC in 1811 and they did move to Haywood County, NC since their son, also named William M. Green was born there in 1829. William Mercer Green moved his family to Carroll County, Georgia about 1830, along with his brother Anderson Green, because of the gold discovery in Indian land by Samuel Hart. William and Nancy Porter Green are both buried near Villa Ricka, Georgia and his mother, Kezziah Patton Green MAY also be buried there. There son, William M. Green came to Texas in about 1850 and married Sophronia Coltharp in about 1853. The couple lived in a small community established by her father near Tyler, Texas where my 89 year old parents live today. Please let me know if I can provide any other data for your search. Hi Beth, Have you done any research of Sir William Duff, the uncle of Robert Green, born 1695? You will recall that Robert Green came to America in about 1712 with his uncle William Duff, the brother of Robert's mother. From what I have read, William Duff returned to England and Robert Green became the owner of his uncle's land. However, starting on page 179 of Will Book A-1 (1721-1752) of King George County, Virginia, the will of William Duff is shown, and it appears that he died in America owning much land. On page 179 of the same will book is apparently the will of Elizabeth Duff, his wife. Her will is dated October 27, 1746 and his will is dated 1741 and probated August 2, 1745. His wife, Elizabeth Duff, appeared in court and refused to accept provisions of her husband's will, so her nephew, Robert Green was qualified as executor of William Duff's estate. My question concerns the identity of Elizabeth Duff. It appears that she did not have any children by William Duff, and she was also married to a man named "Rush." She left cash to her son, Benjamin Rush, and named her grandson, Benjamin Rush, as executor of her estate, and names several children of Benjamin Rush in her will. It is my GUESS she was married to Benjamin Rush, Sr. What do you know, or believe, about this family? I have another connection to the "Rush" family, in that I descend from a Major James M. Rush, born about 1807 probably in Georgia, and I have not been able to identify his parents. As a result, I have researched the family of Dr. Benjamin Rush who signed the Decleration of Independence and was one of the foremost doctors of the early days of our country. I wonder if Elizabeth Duff was also married to Dr. Benjamin Rush???? My James M. Rush married Tennessee Blair about 1844 and the couple emigrated to the Republic of Texas in the spring of 1845. Their daughter, Vannie Rush married Archibald Cockerell, and these were the grandparents of my Mother. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Tom Green

Hi Linda, I believe you have several Green families mixed together. I descend from William Green, born February 6, 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, who moved to Orange County, North Carolina where he joined the Hillsborough Militia in about 1779. He married Kezziah Patton there January 9, 1781 and their first son was Thomas S. Green born October 24, 1781. This family moved to Burke County, NC about 1783 where most of their children were born. In about 1817 some of the family moved to Haywood County, NC where William Green died March 2, 1837. For many years various cousins attempted to connect our Greens with the New Jersey Greens that came to the Yadkin River. This was the Jeremiah Green family, but I have not been able to find any connection to this family. I will add my comments to your message below regarding the Greens you have posted. Tom Green In a message dated 98-10-06 09:55:57 EDT, you write: << Tom, I have noticed that you seem to be quite knowledgeable of many of the Green lines, and for this reason I am writing to see if you have any info on my Green grandfathers who moved to NC reportedly from NJ. They apparently moved to Haywood County, NC with their parents, but soon migrated to Carroll County, Georgia where they are buried near Villa Ricka, Georgia.) Tom, if you need names on the next generations, I have that. Two more questions -- you have mentioned a JEREMIAH GREEN who was the first to leave his family in NJ and move to NC. 1) Do you know if he moved to western NC, BUNCOMBE CO., around 1800? 2) Is he related to my grandfathers as shown above? (No, I don't think there is any connection between Jeremiah Green and my William Green. The parents of Jeremiah were Judge William Green, born about 1671 in England, who married Joanna Reeder in 1682. Some researchers believe that Judge William Green had a brother names William Green, and this could be the family our William Green descended from, but I don't think so. It is my opinion that our William Green descended from either a Thomas Green or a John Green who lived in Prince Edward County, Virginia, but several of us have spent many years attempting to identify the parents of our William Green.) Tom, thank you very much for any info you can provide on these Greens. We all appreciate your input. Linda Pitt County, NC >> I hope this has helped in some way. Let me know if I can provide any other info. Tom Green

I didn't know there were so many researching Alabama for Greens. So anything I find on Alabama I will post. the parents of Rev. Alexander Littlepage Green, (George and Judith Spilman Green) is reported to have sixteen children and only about four of them has been found. I think George died in Jackson Co. Ala. They lived some in Tenn. Judith Green got a land grant after George died. Then there was the older man age 80 to 90 in Aaron Greens houshold in the 1830 census of Madison Co. Ala. I am sure he must have had several children. This Aaron Green was born about 1804 and married about 1820 (according to children born). Another marriage that could be a connection, John Priest married Nancy Green about 1822. John Priest is the brother to Benjamin Greens wife Mary (Dolly) Priest from Lawrence Co. Ala. John Priest shows up on the Tax record of Madison Co. Tenn. also. Benjamin Green came to Texas and had a son named George W. John and Nancy Priest died before the 1850 census and I believe they raised a son of John and Nancy Priest (William Priest). William Priest was born in Tenn, in the early 1830. James Green who was in the 1850 census of Tyler County Texas was born in Va. In his household was a daughter (Catherine) born in Va. about 1809/10. She never married. James was born about 1785. He died about 1852. I have not been found any other children connected to him. Possibly a Ellis Green may have been a son. James had a young girl in his census (Mary Hooker) whom I think may have been a grandaughter. IN later census Catherine was referred to as "AUNT" to Mary. Robert Hooker married Ann Green in Lawrence Co. Ala. and came to Texas about 1838. They may have died because I haven't been able to find them in the 1850 census. So possibly Ann Green may have been a daughter of James Green. James Green is a mystery. So little do we know about him. I haven't been able to find a probate or any records like that on him. He is not listed in the land indices of Tyler Co. Texas. Could he have left a WILL in another state? Mell
