    1. [GREEN-L] Re: Daniel Boone & Lewis Green Connection.
    2. Hi Dan, Thanks for posting the info on the Potts Creek area. You seem very knowledgable of the area and I have interest in that part of the country. You are probably aware that the Jersey Settlement was established near the ancient Indian crossing of the Yadkin River, and I have attempted to find the parents of my William Green born 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, and died in Haywood County, North Carolina March 2, 1837. If you know of any connection to any Green family in Jersey Settlement I would be most interested in what you may have. The other family I have an interest is the Lewis Green family, and the story is that Lewis Green went on an extended bear hunt with Daniel Boone and was all but killed by the bear, but managed to survive and the creek where this happned was named Lewis Creek in his honor. I am attempting to determine if this Lewis Green was related to Lucy Blackwell Green, born February 27, 1776, who married Senator George Boone. Lucy Blackwell Green was the daughter of Capt. William Green, born about 1754, who was the son of Robert Green who married Patty Ball, a relative of President George Washington. Can you provide any help with this Lewis Green? Thanks, Tom Green

    2. To person named Ellen who is a descendant of James Jefferson Green: Please send me another message. I deleted by accident your email (sent to me while I was without a computer but now have a new computer). Hence, I do not have your email address. I only guessed that your ancestor came from some co. in NC because I remembered a speaker whose name I have now forgotten mentioned that people of Jones Co. (I think?) NC moved to Marengo Co, AL in the early 1800s. You see I am 81 hears old but still collecting Greens since I am looking for the parents of my Joseph Green who died in old Tryon Co, NC in 1771/2 (but will now filed in Lincoln Co.). I am not related to your line. Margaret Green

    3. I'm still a little new at all of this, so please bare with me... Thanks. My Cousin, and I have been researching our Helms, and Green lines, The Helms line has been solved (except for brothers and sisters), so our attention is now placed on his wife Adelia Green (e). She was to have been born in Bergen, County, NJ. no parents listed... this is from her death Certificate.., she was Married in 1864, to Charles V. Helms of Monroe Works, NY, which is were the Wedding took place. Yesterday, I came across, an Adelia Greene who's parents are Leland Greene and Nancy Wilmarth, however no dates are given for any of them, and no place of birth for any of them... Does any one know this family? Where are they from? I have looked on for information on census lists, and at the LDS, but so far Adelia has not turned up... This is the first that I have found..! If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated... Thank you, Wanda Clowater SunWolf@WolfEmail.com

    1. [GREEN-L] Judge John W. Green - VA
    2. Hi Group, I read an interesting story last evening about Judge John W. Green, born November 9, 1781, who was the grandson of Col. John Green, born about 1730, who was the son of Robert Green, born 1695. Judge John W. Green was the only son of Capt. William Green, born about 1757, who was captured at sea on the ship, Defiance by the British during the Revolution, and most researchers believe died in the battle. However, I have read that he escaped and reappeared three years later, but who knows. Judge John W. Green was apparently a great man and is always spoken of as one of the best of his time. He was the host to General La Fayette on his 4th visit to America in 1825. The 50th aniversary of the Decleration of Independence was a big event, and Gen. La Fayette was the guest of the nation and went from one reception to the next, and while visiting Culpeper County, VA, where many believe one of the first militia for the Revolution was formed, La Fayette was the guest of Judge John W. Green on August 22, 1825 at his home called Greenwood. The story is that after taking refreshments, the citizens form a receiving line and La Fayette asked to be introduced to each citizen. Judge John W. Green served his guest iced drinks, which must have been difficult in August of 1825. You can imagine how proud Judge John W. Green must have been to host this great patriot who was so loved by his grandfather, Col. John Green, who wrote to Thomas Jefferson while he was in Paris, in an effort to find his son, Capt. William Green, the father of Judge John W. Green. Can anyone fill in more details about this family? Tom Green

    3. I am posting this obit of Archibald Green, 1799 Vermont - 1885 Ohio in the hopes that it will help someone in our group. I found it in the book "Some Smiths, Osborns, and Allied Families of New England and Ohio": (Note his sons were living in NY) Obit.: Archibald Green, b. Williamstown, Vt., 1 May 1799, d. at his home in N. Bloomfield, Ohio, 30 Sept. 1885. "In Feb. 1817, a sturdy, brave hearted boy, with a sled, two yoke of oxen, and a team of horses, he made a 26-day journey from the hills of Vermont to the woods of Ohio. And going straight to Bloomfield he never changed his plan of battle. ...In 1829 he married Nancy Howe, a woman who would grace alike a cabin or a palace. ... Brick and marble may build palaces, but they do not build such a home as (theirs) ... For nearly half a century that modest home was as a rock in the storm, a light in the dark and a place of cheer in gloom to a whole community, and there was something touching and positively beautiful in the hold which it kept on the sons and daughters who went forth from it..." Mr. Green kept his integrity perfect...On all questions of morality, in all political questions where freedom for the slave, or justice to any man was concerned, men knew instinctively where he would stand.... Yet he was a perfect gentleman; he was simply unfailing in a courtesy and hospitality that was at once gentle and sincere...His whole life was an unusual example of unselfishness...He was forever stopping his own forward march to help someone on who faltered on the journey". He and Nancy had six children, five of whom survived him--Albert W. and Edward M. of New York; and Mrs. Wm. Chinnock, Mrs. W. S. Ackley, and Mrs. A. V. 3. Hi List, I'm searching for a missing GREEN. My grandmother, born Jennie Green, 25 Sept 1870, Ohio, was married to my grandfather Joseph BRADFORD WEAVER, in IN in the late 1800's. She had a sister named Rosella. Her death certificate gave no parents and only that she was born in Ohio. Have not been able to get over this brick wall or even tear down a few bricks. Indiana doesn't show marriage stats for them or have I been able to find her or her parents on the 1880-1890-1900 census. However I have a photo of her and her sister Rosella taken in South Whitley, IN in 1899. If any GREEN's out there have siblings by these names, please contact me through the list or at my email. 2. I am still trying to locate my grandfather JOHN MANVERS GREENE between 1902 and 1904 when he married my grandmother CECILIA POWERS . He was born in Phila in1858 to JOHN F A GREENE & MARIA MADDEN also of Phila, appears in the 1880 census living at 7078 Rubicam Ave in Germantown with his wife Frances L. Wood both age 23. They live next door to GEORGE & ELIZABETH WOOD,builder and WILLIAM & MARY WOOD vet. surgeon all born in England. The next time I find him is in the 1900 census living at 2322 Poplar St in Phila with his wife Sarah Wood sister of Frances and son Stanley age 18. As my mother was born in 1905, Frances must have died shortly thereafter, as I have heard, and he then met and married my grandmother Cecilia. Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Newman, Indiana Historical Society, 1985, states the following: "NATURALIZATION BASED ON MILITARY SERVICE: Special considerations regarding the naturalization process were given veterans. An act of July 17, 1862, permitted 'any alien, of the age of twenty-one years and upwards, who has enlisted, or may enlist in the armies of the United States, either the regular or the volunteer forces, and has been, or may be hearafter, honorably discharged, without any previous declaration of intention to become such; and he shall not be required to prove more than one year's residence.' While this legislation was used to induce aliens to enlist for the Civil War, it applied to any war, including the Mexican, Indian, and the Spanish-American wars. One would not find any declaration made but would find proof of residence, good moral character, and proof of his honorable discharge." The implication of this? Soldiers were REQUIRED PRIOR TO THIS DATE to declare their intent to become citizens prior to enlistment and were required to show residence in accordance with the law giving them 3 years, if under the age of 18 when entered the US, or 5 years otherwise. If I am correct, Matthew Green was convicted of assault and battery in March 1852 after he had enlisted March 1851 and the Army got him out to New Mexico Territory and out of trouble. I need to find his first wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Mary Ann someplace, without Matthew in the household. As I said, I need experts like you two to find them in Saratoga County in 1855 and prove my theory correct. I have already ordered the CD database for the 1850 Federal Census. It cost me $30. If I get good results from using this, I will work on Jane Armstrong's whereabouts next, if our work does not somehow uncover her in 1850 with Matthew Green nearby. The booklet also talks extensively about naturalization fraud. In New York, there was "colossal fraud", beginning in 1828, mainly involving voting fraud. As you know, the certificate shows Matthew is 22, in August 1850, and he was naturalized in three years, not five. Another nail in my theory. The possibility exists that Matthew Green was forced to serve in the Army because he was an alien convict. During the Civil War, the government used naturalizations (implication: without permission) to gain the right to draft aliens. It could possibly have been forced on him due to his conviction, in the years prior to the Civil War. The Mexican War had raged a few years before. Many Irish went to serve in that war, on both the Mexican side and the US side. Guess they just loved to fight. -- Tim mailto:phwalls@prodigy.net Researching MCCLINTOCK, ARMSTRONG, GREEN, all of Irish descent, especially County Tyrone (MCCLINTOCK, ARMSTRONG) and Co. 2. In a message dated 98-10-07 14:24:36 EDT, you write: << Were your Greens still in Carroll Co. in 1840? Some of the given names you listed show up in John Cephas GREEN's family, but none of them are unusual, I suppose! There were at least two or three Tillmans in our family, Thomas & William occur frequently, as do Martha & Elizabeth John Cephas GREEN was b. 08 MAR 1812. According to various census schedules he was born in SC. He married Nancy T. HUCKEBA/HUCKABY, daughter of William and Sarah (Brown) Huckaby in Coweta Co., GA, in 1836. They were listed (on p. 51) in Carroll Co. on the 1840 census, though they apparently left GA around 1841. >> Hi Elizabeth, Sorry, but I don't recognize your John Cephas Green. I have no indication that the John Green in my line went to Georgia, but then I don't know where he went! Yes, William Mercer Green, born about 1786 in Burke County, NC died in Carroll County, Georgia on March 24, 1847 and is buried next to his wife, Nancy Porter Green who died March 6, 1847, in fact there was one burial ceremony for both. They are buried in a private family cemetery and a cousin was keeping up the graves, but has died within the past few years. This family lived in the home originally built by Samuel Hart who discovered gold in Indian territory, which caused the Indian wars of that day, ending in the Trail of Tears. Tom Green

About all I can add to the info posted is an explanation of why Sir Henry Greene was beheaded. Richard II had promised the son of the Duke of Lancaster that he could inherite his father's estate when he died, but the King changed his mind, because he needed the money, and when a outcry arose over the King's taking of personal property, the matter went to the "committee" of which Sir Henry Greene was the CEO, since he was the Lord Chief Justice. A legal opinion was a little different in the 1300's and Sir Henry Greene knew where his bread was buttered, and he ruled that the King did in fact have the right to change his mind. Well, as you can imagine, the new Duke of Lancaster was very upset, and he marched on the King, who had left to fight Ireland (again) so Sir Henry Greene decided that his responsibility was to protect the Queen, who was the 8 year old (you heard me right) daughter of the King of France. Sir Henry Greene and his two friends took the child Queen to the castle in Bristol because the palace guard was suppose to be the cream of the crop. Guess what the young Duke of Lancaster did; he bribed the palace guard, and walked right in and took Sir Henry Greene and his friends out to the town square and cut their head off! I bet you have not read that version of history! Tom Green
