My first hunch would be that this John Green is also a son of Filmer. The will for Thomas in 1792 mentions a son, John, dec'd. I have been working on the hypothesis that this John is the same John who married Betty Arthur in Lunenburg, later Bedford Co. and died in 1776. I do not have the source of Lewis, but suspect that it comes from an attempt to rationalize the inheritance and sale back to William. Charley Green >> Hi Charley, What documentation I have found is in the Amelia County, Virginia records. I have seen a simular description of the "1/5 interest" of Lewis Green as "heir- at-law" on E-Mail message, but have not found documentation of his involvment. The John Green that married Betty Arthur was the son of Thomas Green the eldest son of William and Amey Clay Green. There is a book on Old Homes in Amelia County which has a picture of one of the houses owned my this family, and there is a description of this transaction given under the picture. I got an E-Mail the other day from a lady who has visited the old home, and she said a descendant still lives there. I have a map of the general location of the old home and I intend to visit the home when I find the time to go to Virginia. This home is not too far from the site of the home Robert Green, born 1695 built near Brandy Station. Tom Green

    1. [GREEN-L] John Green in Alabama?
    2. Elisabeth Green Streeter
    3. Did I read John? I have a John who seemingly sprang up full grown! Census records say he was born in 1812 in SC. In 1850, he was in Randolph Co., AL. He was John Cephas Green. In 1840, he was listed in Carroll Co., GA, and he married in 1836 in Coweta Co., GA, to Nancy T. Huckeba. They named their children Samuel W., Henry T., Thomas P., Elizabeth C., Martha Matilda, Andrew H., James Crawford, Sarah F., Lucious Leroy, Sallie J., and John C., in case any names sound familiar... John & Nancy apparently came to AL around 1841. Nancy was daughter of William and Sarah (Brown) Huckeba, and sister of William Benson Huckaby, who was said to have served in the GA Militia with John C. Green during the Creek War in 1836. For those who are not that familuar with these Greens, William Green married his cousin Elizabeth "Betsy" Green, the daughter of Duff Green. His brother, Francis Wyatt Green, born about 1784, married Lucy Strother. Francis and William Green were the sons of Col. William Green, born about 1727, who married Ann Coleman. Col. William Green was the son of Robert Green, born 1695, who married Eleanor Dunn. William Duff was the uncle of Robert Green and the brother of his mother Eleanor Duff. I did find some new info on the Duff family stating that William Duff had a brother named James Duff, born 1716, who married Mildred Tutt of Culpeper County, Va in 1738. They had a son named John Duff, born 1739, who married Sarah Nash. They had a son named James Duff, born April 15, 1761, who married Elizabeth Strother, born July 20, 1773. This info is on page 69 of Volume 4 of "Some Prominent Virginia Families" by Louise Pecquet du Bellet. I am not familiar with the Kezziah Green you mention as the daughter of Richard Green, who married William Boon. Do you have additional info on this family? I am attempting to identify the parents of my William Green, born Febraury 6, 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia who married Kezziah Patton in Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina January 9, 1781. Another of William's brothers, Abraham, was Justice of the Court and a local squire. The William who eventually got the property married his daughter, Obedience. Filmer moved to Tennessee. >> Hi Charley, I wanted to address your above mentioned subject in a separate message to keep down confusion. First of all let me say that the dates in the "Seagull" Green family are the most suspect of any family I have researched, but I want to mention that I show Thomas Green, the elder brother of William Green, who married Amey Clay, was born about 1665 and died in Amelia County, Virginia in 1730. If this death date is any where near being correct, he could not have been the Thomas Green named as guardian of the minor children of his brother William Green since William died 1747. I believe that the guardian was Thomas Green, the eldest son of William and Amey Clay Green. I show he was born about 1725, and would therefore have been about age 22 when his father William Green died in 1747. All the other children were minors. You are probably aware that this Thomas Green had a son also named Thomas Green, born about 1750, who married Martha Coleman. His name appears in many of the Amelia County, Virginia records, and may confuse the issue. Of course, if my dates are off just a couple of years, the above story is incorrect. There are other possible Thomas Greens that could also have been the guardian of William and Amey Clay Green's minor children. Thomas and Elizabeth Marston Green had a son named Thomas Marston Green born November 19, 1723, so he could have been the guardian of his uncle's minor chilren. I am sure the other brothers of William Green had sons named Thomas Green, so any of them could have been the guardian of their Uncle William Green's minor children. There is another famous family that could have been involved in the squable over the land discussed above. Amey Clay was the sister of Charles and Henry Clay who married Lucy and Martha Green, daughers of Thomas and Elizabeth Marston Green. This Clay family was very important in our country's history, as I am sure you know. Col. Thomas Marston Green, the brother of Martha and Lucy Green, went to Georgia and talked the government into creating a county in the Natchez area, when the Spanish chaimed that part of America. On top of that, Col. Green went to Natchez and told the Spanish to get out of town! This was not a shy and retiring family! What do you think? Tom Green

Upon William's death, his widow, Amey Claye, quickly remarried and there was a nasty custody battle in the local court. Most likely this was prompted by attempts to control the significant inheritance of his children, all of whom were minors. I believe that the Thomas who was awarded custody was not William's son but was his elder brother Thomas. Another of William's brothers, Abraham, was Justice of the Court and a local squire. The William who eventually got the property married his daughter, Obedience. Filmer moved to Tennessee. Charley Green "Lewis Green, by deed made in Granville County, NC, conveyed his rights to the property lying on the east side of Green's Road in Amelia County. This was described as a 1/5 part of the estate of William Green dec'd. The conveyance was made to William Green (his brother)." >> Hi Charley, Yes, I have seen the information you posted above, and would like to prove what you have is correct. I have never seen anything to document that Lewis Green was the son of Filmer and Ann Green. I do have a copy of the 1792 abstract of the will of the William Green who married his 1st cousin, Obediance Green, which menions his nephew, William Green the son of Philmer Green. Do you know of any documentation showing that a Lewis Green was the brother of this William Green? I have seen the July 24, 1800 land deed where Green Williamson sold land that was "1/5 part of land left unwilled by William Green, deceased, and which falls to said Williamson as heir at law." I believe that this Green Williamson was the son of Martha "Patty" Green the sister of Filmer and William Green, who were the sons of William and Amey Clay Green. I show that Martha Green married William Williamson, and have therefore ASSUMED Green Williamson was their son. There is also a October 24, 1804 land deed where John Green sold his 1/5 (same wording as above) to William Green. It is my opinion that this John Green was the son of Thomas and Martha Green the elder brother of Filmer and William Green, therefore a nephew of the William Green who was buying up "the old home place." These are the only two documents that I have seen that MIGHT prove who all there Greens were. Can you add anything else to the picture. Thanks for your help! Tom Green

The widow Cox, sister of Sir Richard Gerard, arrived in Maryland with her brother on the Ark or Dove in 1633-4. In 1634 she married Thomas Green in what is believed to be the first Christian marriage performed in Maryland. They had two sons, THOMAS AND LEONARD. Ann died about 1645 or 46. Her husband remarried once (some think twice) more. He and his last wife, Winifred Seybourne, had two sons, ROBERT & FRANCIS. GOV. THOMAS GREEN, son of Sir Thomas Green of Bobbing Kent Manor in England, died at St. Mary's, Maryland in 1651. I have found information on the governor's younger son Francis, but am trying to connect GERARD GREEN (1761-1845) to either of the older sons, Thomas or Leonard. (Note: some records make me think Gov. Green was also named Henry; his son Thomas also seems to be called Henry in at least one early source.)
