Dear Fellow Green tree climbers, http://image.vtls.com/ This Address will get you to an incredible data base for Colonial Virginia. There are land records, marriage records, old bible records, court records, etc. Enjoy---and if anyone figures out how to use the Bible records, please post the directions. There is a reference to Thomas and Hannah Green, who setlled in the 1600's from Holland via England. The William Green--Culpepper Greens are also listed. I can't seem to figure out how to access them. Go Well, Cindy Green/Sproul

Thank you Mell for posting this information to the list! While Im dissapointed that no Charles Greenes appeared, I most certainly do appreciate the time and trouble it took for you to do this for the rest of us. Thank you Mell! Hi Folks! Ive had literally a ton! of requests for this recipe, so please forgive my posting it to the list, it seems that this is the easiest way to pass it along. I for one would really appreciate any "Greene/Green" family handed down recipes that you all might have. My brother Carl may remember differently, but I recall that each time Mom served this soup, Dad would proudly announce that " it has been in the Greene Family since before the Civil War". ( Carl, we should bug Mom for any other "greene family" recipes she might have...I had to bug Mom in order to get this one) Anyway here it is as it was given to me,,,, my notations are in brackets: Lima Bean Soup 1 lb dry lima beans ( I HATE lima beans, so I use white or navy, they work just fine) 3/4 lb peeled ripe tomatoes ( or one large can) celery and parsley ( no quantity given, use what you like) 1 large onion 1 large carrot 1 small potatoe ( onion, carrot and potatoe I cut up) 1 bay leaf 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp worchestershire sauce( or more if you like ) 1 lb kholbassa sausage ( In case your wondering, this and the worchestershire sause were available prior to 1850. I dont know about bouilliion cubes, I think this is a later addition) 2 beef bouillion cubes Wash beans, cover with water to make 3/4 pot full ( dont know what this means.... I wash beans, drain and then cover with water again, let sit overnight then drain and add water to cover beans in a 8 quart pot) Add everything except kholbassa. Bring to boil then let simmer 2 hours. Add sausage. Cook till done. ( I cut up the sausage) Thats It! I find its great in the winter the day its made, but its even better the next day. Fool proof too, you can vary it however you like to. Sue Pawley trottr@icanect.net
Question... How many Green's (Greene's ) Lived in NJ? Any in Bergen County? I'm still looking for Adelia Green, so trying a new approach. I found one Adelia Green daughter of Leland, but I do not know where this family is located.. Adelia Died in Carbondale, PA. no parents listed on Death Cerificate... Any ideas? Thanks... Wanda
Tom I ordered the index on film from Salt Lake through my family History Center. I copied the part on the Greens. Yes I think that most of them are from the Robert Green Family. Since I have posted the index I have found there are several other older newspapers in that era. Maybe they are on line. I will see if I can find them. Mell
In a message dated 98-10-25 14:13:19 EST, Crgtx writes: << Do you have any more info on the home? or the book of homes? I have two sisters and a cousin who live in Richmond. Maybe they could check it out. My aged daddy is supposed to visit them for Thanksgiving. I'm sure he would love to see it. Charley >> Hi Charley, The book is Volume 2, entitled, "Old Homes and Buildings of Amelia County, Virginia" by Gibson Jefferson McCannaughey. On page 103 is the picture of Horse Pen Plantation. On page 101 is a picture of "Greenland" which is said to have been the home William Green, who married his first cousin,Obedience Green, when he made his will in 1790. You will recall that this couple did not have any children, and William Green is said to have left half of his property to his wife, and half to his nephew, William Green, the son of his brother Filmer Green. This book says that Filmer Green's son, William left 1/5 of this land to his "heir-at-law" Lewis Green. I have not been able to document this version of the story, and do not have any documentation of Filmer Green haveing a son named Lewis Green. Several have told me there was such a son, and I feel this is probably correct, but I would like to have some documentation of this son. Can you help? Green Land is located on the east side of County Road 622, which is on the eastern part of Amelia County, Virginia. If you go to the area, I would also suggest that you visit the site of Liberty Hall, the home that Robert Green (born 1695) built about about 1717. The site is about four miles north west of Brandy on Route 625 in Culpeper County, Virginia. The original home burned in 1850 and was rebuilt in 1870. I do not know the current status of the home. You might also like to visit another historic place if you visit the Culpeper area. Catalpa Farm, is located 1/4 mile south of Route 522, which was the site of the first campsite of the Culpeper Minute Men. The son of Robert Green, Capt. John Green was one of the men that raised one of the first companies of Minute Men. The flag of these heros included a coiled rattlesnake with the words, "Don't Tread on Me" below the snake. On either side of the snake are the words, "Liberty or Death." A flag very much like the Culpeper Minute Man flag was used during the Texas Revolution, so I have always been interested in the connection. I hope you enjoy your trip to visit the homes of our ancestors. Please send me your thought after you have visited these sites. I am most interested in how such a visit makes you feel. I love to visit historic sites, and always have a very special feel while present where our heros and patriots of the past once lived. Best Regards, Tom Green
Dawn asked about genealogy software: > Do any of you have any suggestions of software to document >the info that we find? I read an article recently that said most all the software is standardized so people can import data into their programs from files on the net. Personally, I would recommend you buy the cheapest software you can find that will allow you to do what you would like to do. For example, if you plan to do family photos and family books, you can choose one that will allow you to include photos. Don't waste your money on the sets that contain many CDs that are said to contain info on ancestors. In my experience they contain nothing but referals to buy another cd for $30 to $50. I am looking for a Ruth Green from possibly NC who was born somewhere around 1750 or possibly earlier if the following marriage was her second. She maried a George PARSONS ( we have just discovered that some documents list him as George PERSON and his marriage bond may have PERSON listed) about 1770 (if our new information is correct). Does anyone have a Ruth Green that could possibly match up with the above in anyway? Really need to find Ruth to get anywhere further on our research. Thanks, Krys
Ok, listers! This is just a stab in the dark at trying to find out where in heck my MATHEW or MATTHEW GREEN was living in 1850. I have all the Matthew GREENs and Mathew GREENs from the 1850 Census. There are not very many of them. Yet, none of them seem to be mine. I do not have his parent's names and all I have is County Meath as his place of birth. No parish listed. His birth year could be anywhere from 1826 to 1833. If you have any Matthew/Mathew Green in your data, AND he is listed as being from IRELAND, please write me about him. I am hoping to at least find out where he lived in either the US or Canada in 1850 but will look at ANY Matthew GREEN, even from the late 1700s and all of the 1800s. I do have a connection with the following names: HAGNEY, ROBINSON, WARD, and ARMSTRONG, but only insofar as they are all connected to my Matthew GREEN. And yet, nothing links up! HELP! Thanks and I continue to hope for the best for all GREEN researchers in your hunts. -- Tim mailto:phwalls@prodigy.net Researching MCCLINTOCK, ARMSTRONG, GREEN, all of Irish descent, especially County Tyrone (MCCLINTOCK, ARMSTRONG) and Co. try these sites: http://www3.libertynet.org/iha/hope/more/recipes.htm or http://www.tcm.org/html/info/education/programs/interact/thanksgiving.html or go to yahoo and input colonial recipes. I didn't try it, but last year on the Mayflower's site, there were recipes. You might just search for that one as well.
I dont have a Colonial Days recipe, but do have a family recipe that according to my late father Charles Greene ( yes, named after the infamous Charles FM Greene that is from under a rock that Im still searching for any info on, Any info at all... ) has been in the Greene Family since "before the Civil War". It is a recipe for Bean Soup and Im more than happy to share it with what ever Greene/Green cousins that might like to have it. Its really simple, and a darned good winter time soup. Just let me know. BTW, it calls for Worchestershire sauce and I Think that would date it no earlier than 1830 ( the soup isnt the same without it either). Hello everyone, Do any of you have any suggestions of software to document the info that we find? Do you know of any shareware? I have gotten alot more info and now have to figure out how to make a "family tree" it would be easier with some guidelines. Thanks for any input. And thank you all for the tips on where to start. I have started researching the census reports and am happy to say I am finding out alot of info. Once I have it all together I will post what I have. Cheers, Dawn
