Last night I began reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to my six year old son. It was our Halloween selection. My husband had recently attended a meeting just outside Tarry Town, NY, and was amused to find out he was in Sleepy Hollow. We told our son that there was a famous story about Sleepy Hollow. It has been years since I read the real thing, so I checked it out of the library. With that introduction, let me transcribe the first paragraph... "In the bosom of one of those spacious coves which indent the eastern shore of the Hudson, at that broad expansion of the river denominated by the ancient Dutch navigators the Tappan Zee, and where they always prudently shortened sail, and implored the protection of St. Nicholas when they crossed, there lies a small market town or rural port, which by some is called Greensburgh, but which is more generally and properly known by the name of Tarry Town. This name was given, we are told, in former days, by the good housewives of the adjacent country, from the inveterate propensity of their husbands to linger about the village tavern on market days...." I had to send this out to see if I can find any Greens researching the vicinity of the Hudson for the 1800's. My cousin and I are still looking for clues to the parents of our anscestor, Adelia Green, born Bergen County, NJ, about 1849 or 1850, married to Charles Vincent Helms in Monroe Works (now Monroe), NY, April 14, 1864 (witnessed by Henry Morgan and Nelson Wilson). With all due respect to our cousins south of the Mason-Dixon, please, please, aren't there any Yankee Greens out there?
About a week ago a website was put on rootsweb as being excellent for military research. I have tried countless times to access it but cannot-either overloaded or something. The address as given is http://www.usig.org/library/military/links/index.htm. Do I have it wrong or is their another way to get in? I do not know who left it on the roots mail. Thanks Joan Smyth Yewtee@aol.com
Hi, Regarding the Clay, Green connections you speak of, I have Marston, William and John unconnected to any wives. Does amy one have this family? I don't think I ever did get the Seagulls set worked out to where it made sense to me. Any help here, as I have a lot to learn yet. Ken

Ken >> Hi Ken, There are several Burwell Greens, and the one I was posting was said to have married Ann Poythress. This Burwell Green had a sister, Susannah Green born about 1700, that married William Gilliam, who is mentioned as a brother-in-law of Peter Green. From what information I have collected, all these siblings, Burwell Green, Susannah Green, and Peter Green were the sons of Lewis Green born about 1639 who lived in the part of Prince George County, VA. that became Surry County. I do not believe this Lewis Green was the one who was attacked by the bear, we were discussing last week. That Lewis Green apparently married Elizabeth Lauderdale. I am most interested in any corrections or additions you can provide. Tom Green

Hi, The Green List seems to be one of the more helpful lists, I would not think someone would want to prevent Green data from being placed on it. My advice is to post it and see who squeeks. A few list hosts surpress information as they are writting a book, and move to redirect data flow as they desire it. Hello, I am new to this list and desperate for some clues about my "orphaned" Green family. What I know: Joseph Robert Green was born (according to death certificate) 20 Nov 1840 in Washington County, AL. He died 8 Dec 1912 in Clarke Co., MS. Death Cert also lists his father's name as Mark Green, birthplace (of course) unknown. His mother is listed as Elizabeth Howell, born (again) unknown. He was a "retired politician" at the time of his death. Joseph Green married Mary Ann Guy (daughter of Wrigdon Guy of Clarke Co., AL) April 30, 1863 in Clarke Co., AL. They had 14 children. In 1880, Joseph and Mary Ann were living in Wayne Co., MS. Joseph Green served in the 8th MS Inf. and is buried at Oddfellow's Cemetery in Quitman, MS. Family members say that this Green family was always involved in politics to some degree, but no one is very clear about what that means. I have been unsuccessful in locating any record of Mark and Elizabeth Green in either MS or AL, and would love to hear from anyone researching Greens from this area. Thanks for your time! A correction has been sent to me regarding the List of Occupations posted to the list a few days ago. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Re: List of Occupations << Holster A groom who took care of horses, often at an inn >> There is a typo here. Actually, the word is "hostler" or "hosteler." A holster is still a leather pouch for holding a pistol or other gun.

I don't know that I am related to Elizabeth GREEN, but I live in Pueblo, Colorado. There is an Historical Marker at the site of the Mormontown with the names of the settlers on it. It was on the Arkansas River, a little east of the Fort Pueblo. A local woman, Mary Lindenmuth Scarcello, has written a book about the Battalion and the people in the settlement. There is where the first white baby in the Colorado Territory was born; the first school, first church and cemetery were there, even though the town did not last long. So Samuel Gould and son John had a part in Colorado history, as well as LDS church history. I'm glad to know they were of GREENS. Her book tells essentially the same information as you told, except a little more about Samuel being in the advanced party to reach Utah and that he had to chase down some horse thieves who had stolen horses from the town. Just found this reference to an early 1700s Greene (Elizabeth Greene). Hopefully someone can use it.... Laura Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia Volume 3 Biographies Grace, Isaac Henry Gould, Samuel, a member of the Mormon Battalion, was born Aug. 15, 1778, in Litchfield county, Connecticut, the son of Jacob Gould and ELIZABETH GREEN. He was an early convert to "Mormonism" and left his first family for the gospel's sake. Having gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo, Illinois, he, together with his co-religionists, was expelled from his home in that city and started for the West. On his arrival on the Missouri river he enlisted in the Mormon Battalion, together with his oldest son, John, and started for California, but after traveling as far as Santa Fe, New Mexico, he was sent with the sick detachment of the Battalion to Pueblo, where he spent the winter of 1846-1847, assisting in taking care of the sick. He arrived in the Valley in the summer of 1847. Brother Gould is supposed to have been the oldest man who enlisted in the Mormon Battalion. He was a member of Parley P. Pratt's party which explored Southern California during the winter of 1849-1850. His wife, Sally, bore him seven children, namely, John, Reuben, Sylvester, James, Maria, Harriet and Jane. In 1851 (Jan. 1st) he married Fanny Ward Lester, who bore him four children, namely, Jacob B., Samuel L., Susannah W. and Emily J. S. Later he married Cynthia Wright who bore him one child. He moved with his family to Southern Utah in 1861 and afterwards made a trip to Michigan to visit his first family, being gone about a year. After residing in Utah's "Dixie" five or six years, he located at Parowan, where he had formerly lived, and there he died Dec. 30, 1869. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- Laura Greene lgg@interaccess.com lggreene@earthlink.net or redhed44@aol.com Carlsbad, California =================================================== Researching: Green(e) (RI>NY), Daves (NC>Illinois), DuBois (NY) Fay (Mass>NY), Riley (NY), Johnson (RI) Hardenbergh (NY), Holden (RI>Mass >NY), Mitchell (?>TX & KS) Putman (NY), Wands (NY), =================================================== FTM Homepage: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/g/r/e/Laura-G-Greene/ Noel's Greene Database: http://al7fl.abts.net/green-page/green.htm Noel's Putman/Putnam Database: http://al7fl.abts.net/putman/putman.htm ===================================================
