    1. [GREEN-L] [DAVIS-L] Christmas Story
    2. Donna M. Wheeler
    3. For all of you researchers..... "Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and the such Were proof that my work had become much to much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and of such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I forgot. Had I not been so busy with grandparent's wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills. While others had bought gifts that would bring Christmas cheer; I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright. Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and I yanked up the sash. When what to my wondering eyes should appear? But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer. Up to the housetop the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys, and old Santa Claus too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. The TV antenna was no match for their horns, And look at our roof with hoof-prints adorned. As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa - KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good old Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk). Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy; When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you", Santa grinned. As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amazement - the cover it read "Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead." "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug," He said as he gave me a a great Santa Hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folks who can't find a thing. Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess." As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team which then rose like the down of a thistle And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family History is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!" ==== DAVIS Mailing List ==== Do not send e-mail messages to mailing lists for which the topic is inappropriate. For more information, email the List Owner, J.J. Johnson (gnbf@gate.net).

From 1754 through 1762 he worked with various land surveyors including LEA, CHURTON, BANKSTON. Both William and Benjamin died during the 1830s. I do not have any documentation that Benjamin was the son of Andrew and Jean, however, he was not of the age to be a likely child of John Calvin and there are no known others. I do, however, have documentation from two records that they had sons John, Andrew and William. John Calvin had one know son - Andrew that went to Texas in about 1834. Andrew Henderson had several and all are well documented. William also had one know son - Andrew that went to Arkansas in about 1854. It was documented by a son of Andrew Henderson that William had another son in the year and after he died, name unknown. William's 1st son Andrew was my gr gr grandfather. Benjamin had minor children when he died but the names are not known. My gr gr grandfather, Andrew CADDEL's 5th son was named Lewis Tyus CADDELL. Andrew's 1st child died young. The next three sons and their father Andrew all died fighting in the Civil War. I have very little information on the GREENs, none on TYUS and none on HENDERSON. Please keep in touch. Lewis Green (half-bro to Burwell) 26 Dec 1789, Caswell Co., NC >> Hi Bill, I have a little Green data that may help you in some way. The Lewis Green who married Elizabeth Caddell was the son of William Green, Jr. born about 1720, who was the son of William Green, Sr. born about 1700 and died December 10, 1749. William Green, Sr. was the 9th son of Lewis Green born about 1639. I realize these dates seem a little hard to believe, and don't have any proof of them. Burwell Green, born April 12, 1765, that married Phoebe Caddell, was the half brother of the above Lewis Green, and the son of Lucy Tyus, the second wife of William Green, Jr. Lucy Tyus, born about 1734, was the daughter of John Tyus and Ann "Agnes" Branch. I hope this helps you in some way. Please let me know if you can add to the data on this family. Tom Green

Was there a will or other evidence? Ken >> Hi Ken, Your theory is correct, but we don't have an accurate birth date for Martha Filmer. The date of birth of Thomas "The Seagull" Green is baised on the fact that a Thomas Green was a passenger on the ship, Speedwell, that arrived in 1635, but this might not have been the correct passage of the ship. I have seen 1649 as the birth date of the young Seagull Green, and I am guessing that the birth year of Martha Filmer is baised on that of her future husband. Can anyone shed any light on this problem? Both sons, Col. Abraham Green and William Green that married Amey Clay, are commmonly given as about 1700, and there are enough land deeds to pretty well prove they were sons of Thomas and Martha Filmer Green, so we are probably incorrect on many of the birth dates of this family. 3. Do any of the GREEN researchers out there have a Charles Green, Ohio, b. between 1820-1850. Or a Sarah A. Lowe, Ohio, b. about same time. Maybe a marriage record about 1850-1869. My gmother was born 25 Sept 1870 so the above dates are approximations. The two children we know of are Jennie GREEN and Rosella GREEEN, b. 1877. 3. Hi all, I have Martha Filmer born in 1640 according to data given to me. Usually a female will have children over a period of 25 years, and usually not over the age of 45, and the few outside the norm of 45 are not much over 50. We ought to expect her last child born about 1685, to 1690 unless the age we have for her is wrong. Thiss seems to exclude Abraham. Was there a will or other evidence? 2. Hi Louise, You have probably seen the recient messages on Gen. Tom Green, and I wanted to ask you about a message you sent to the list in August. If I have already asked you this question, please excuse, but with so many others working on this family, I would appreciate any info you may have on this family at this time. Your August message has the following posting: __________________________________________________________________ COL. ABRAHAM GREEN {R (4), R (3), R (2), L (1)} Lived in Amelia County. Tom Green to the Thomas "The Seagull" Green family. As you know, Col. Abraham Green was the son of Thomas "Seagull" Green, and was born about 1700 and married Elizabeth Cowles and 2nd Ann Blunt Nicholson. The problem is that Judge Nathan Green, the father of Gen. Thomas Green, was born May, 16, 1792 and could not have been the son of Col. Abraham Green, born about 1700. We are relatively sure that the father of Judge Nathan Green was Thomas Green who married Nancy Wood first married to William Foster. I have ESTIMATED that this Thomas Green was born no later than 1760 baised on his oldest son, Edward Green being born about 1786, AND the story that this Thomas Green fought in the American Revolution and was wounded in the Battle of Monmouth. I do believe Gen. Tom Green was a descendant of Thomas "Seagull" Green, but as you can see, it appears we are missing a generation somewhere. Any ideas? Tom Green

Various members of my family have searched for the parents of William Green, born February 6, 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia for over 30 years, and I believe it is safe to say, that if there was some document that names the parents of my 4th great grandfather, someone would have found it by now. Some years ago, I noted that Prince Edward County was formed from Amelia County, Va and many of the descendants of the Thomas "The Seagull" Green family lived in these counties. I have therefore collected considerable data on this family, and you are correct about the dates. There are numerious errors in the dates of this family, but I have not been concerned about these errors, since I am looking two or three generation down the family tree for the parents of my William Green. I am alarmed that we do not seem to have well documented information in the 3rd and 4th generation of the family. I know this information is out there, but it has been very difficult to research. I have had pretty good luck in researching Thomas Green, born about 1665, the son of Thomas "Seagull" Green. He married Elizabeth Marston who was born November 25, 1672 and many of their children and grandchildren were notable citizens. I have also had good luck with Col. Abraham Green who was the sheriff of Amelia County, Va. He married Elizabeth Cowles about 1725, and their daughter, Obedience Green, born about 1730, married her first cousin, William Green, the son of William and Amey Clay Green. I have more info on the family of William and Amey Clay Green than any other, and this family is where the Horsepen land was concentrated. I have little more that one or two generation of the other children of Thomas "Seagull" Green. There are a number of Web Pages that contain considerable details about this family. Good Luck in your search! Tom Green

    3. Hi Tom and all, I have been collecting whatever I can find on the VA Greens, all of them, who were there prior to 1750, and I expanded that to 1800 to find possible surnames used as first names. My point is that what I find seems to be in question. Dates don't match the expected marriages, children too far apart, that sort of thing. Has anyone worked up a (best guess) list for the Seagull, and the others also? I sure would like to know what the most excepted data is. We have two sets of Greens, in Montgomery Co., one goes in to a fellow named Farnsworth, ( I heard), and the other used the Seagull names, and Bolling names. Example: Bolling Green. Bollings used Green Bolling. Ouch. The NC Wm Green born 1740s or earlier, used (in later generatiopns) the name Anderson, Pleasant, Marston, Philmer/Filmer, Goodman, Bolling, plus a healty dose of all those common ones, like James, John , Wm etc. The other set used Greene, (Farnsworth's set ?). Any good reference I ought to find? If some has the most accepted data earlier ones, would they post it, so I can check my data again. Ken
