    2. In a message dated 98-12-26 02:04:19 EST, you write: << >Hi there, While I do not know who the Van Vechtens were that hosted Generals Green and Washington while there were in NJ for winter quarters in 1779, I do know who was putting up the troops. Our Guerin family of Morris Co. NJ and the next door neighbors, the Wicks, were home to the troops. We could not provide fancy dinners and three hours of dancing. We did give up every tree on the farm to build the huts for the troops. Thomas Guerin, his sons Joshua and Joseph were the "hosts with the most for the boys!" that winter and another one, too. There is now a National Park up there near Morristown on the Wick and Guerin farms and the manager of the park lives in Joshua's house! Merry Christmas! Elsie Wilson, descended from Thomas and Joseph Guerin. >> Hi Elsie, Thanks for your reply, I enjoyed the story very much. I love to hear any story about our ancestors and how their lives were affected by the Rev. War. It has always seemed strange to me that the officers would have parties and dances while the troops were freezing to death! I do not believe the story I related about Gen. Washington dancing with Catharine Littlefield Greene was an unusual story. I have seen stories about many parties and dances throughout the war. I was passing this info about the Van Veghtens to David Green who is working on the restoration of the home across the street from the Van Veghten home, which was where General George Washington wintered the same year. I would appreciate any other stories you micht have about the events of the period. Best Wishes, Tom Green

    2. In a message dated 98-12-25 22:15:35 EST, you write: << Tom, I just discovered the parents of my missing grandmother Jennie Green, b. 25 Sept 1870, Ohio. She m. Joseph BRADFORD WEAVER, b. 22 Sept 1868, IN, on 2 Oct 1890 in Noble Co. IN. Her parents were Charles GREEN and Sarah A. LOWE, both from OH. Was wondering if you had come across these names in your Green research. Harold Williams willhn@flash.net >> Congratulations Harold! It is always great to discover a previously unknown ancestor, and I wish you luck in identify the others. I have not done any research on Greens in the Ohio or Indiana area, but have seen numberious mentions of Greens in these states on the Green list and will post this reply to the list in hopes that some else will be able to help you. 3. Good evening to the GREEN list members, The subject WILLIAM GREEN married ELIZABETH WHEELER, September 13, 1659, at Malden, MA. ELIZABETH was born July 8, 1641, at Charlestown, MA, and died sometime before February 06, 1693/94, when WILLIAM married the much married ISABEL FARMER. ELIZABETH was a daughter of ISAAC and FRANCES (WATSON) WHEELER, and I have a good handle on their children if anyone is interested. It is dear ISABEL who has me stumped. I show that she married (1) DAVID WYMAN, April 27, 1675, at Woburn, MA, (2) JAMES BLOOD, November 19, 1679, and (3) WILLIAM GREEN, February 06, 1693/94. In none of the marriages do I show any children. I have absolutely no information on ISABEL, her parents, siblings, or children. If anyone on the list has any information that they are willing to share, it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Rick in Thailand

    2. Hi, Does anybody know if Gen. Nathaniel Greene ever lived in Virginia? Stories handed down in my Green family say they were from New Jersey but so far I haven't been able to get my Greens out of Virginia. The problem has been Prince William Co., Virginia where much of the records have been burned. I'm already related to Gen. George Washington through another family that married my Greens. I was just curious. 1. [GREEN-L] Christmas letter!
    2. High Mountain Bear
    3. Good morning and Merry Christmas to all, Although the warm sunshine is melting our snow, we are still enjoying a white Christmas. Our children and grandchildren live in different areas of California, but have keep the phone busy with their seasons greetings to us. We are blessed with the fact our son Scott and his son Scooter, age nine, live with us. Scooter keeps the spirit of Christmas alive and gleaming, here on the mountain, and is a constant reminder of the reason we celebrate December 25th. Below is a copy of the Christmas letter my wife sent out to our friends, family and loved ones. I feel it is appropriate to share with all, as a token of love from our home to yours. Merry Christmas to all! Del Black In the beautiful Tehachapi Mountains of California ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From our home to yours, Silence and Serenity accompanies the softly falling snow in blanketing the yard and the surrounding hills. The year has slipped by weaving one day into the other. December is upon us and Christmas is just around the corner. Christmas, a time for remembering, a time for sharing. If only we could feel the warmth and glory of this season each and every day. Why can't we sing Christmas carols in July? The melodies are most beautiful of all! Perhaps we should listen to Silent Night all year long, to keep the love and kindle the spirit in our hearts each day. But then again, there is something quite magical about December. Maybe it is the sparkle in a child's eye, the sound of their laughter counting each day, waiting for Saint Nick to make his yearly visit, trying so hard to remember it is really Jesus' Birthday. May the spirit of Christmas remain in our hearts as the season's change. Remember the love of all in the springtime, when our hills are ablaze with Daffodils and wildflowers, as the warm rays of the sun touches our cheeks and the cool breezes gently blow away our troubles. Wonderful summertime! Have you ever listened to the crackle of the oak leaves beneath your feet, as your eyes behold the wonder of the color of the leaves in autumn? My family, my friends, I think about you in the evening as the first snow dances softly to the earth making all clean and pristine! As morning dawns the hillside is covered with the smooth white powder indented with just a few footprints left by the mountain quail, as they seem to frolic as they take cover beneath the drooping branches of the pines. Now it is time to say thank you my family and friends for helping to give our lives true meaning! We wish you a glorious New Year full of love, laughter, good health and happiness. The time to see the beauty around you and keep Christmas alive in your hearts. Del, Lennie, Scott, Scooter and Benny

    1. [GREEN-L] Re: Jeremiah Green & wife Sarah Anne Hartley
    2. Hi Helen, You posted a message to the Rowanroots list in Dec. 19, 1998 asking for the parents of Sarah Anne Hartley, and I wanted you to know that there are a number of people researching this family on the Green list, so I am posting my reply on both list in hopes that someone will be able to help you. I do not know the parents of Sarah Anne Hartley, and in fact did not know that was her name. I show her name as Joanna Hartley, which is probably a nick name. My interest has been the Jeremiah Green, born February 17, 1755 in New Jersey, who married Mary Wiseman. This Jeremiah Green was the brother of Richard Green, who was the father of the Jeremiah who married your Sarah Anne Hartley. The father of the first Jeremiah Green was Judge William Green who built the fitst brick home in the area about 1717, as I recall. The home still stands on the campus at Trenton, NY. Others have great detail on this family if you are researching the family. I had a cousin who died in the 1960's who spent many years attempting to prove that our William Green, born February 6, 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia was the son or grandson of Jeremiah Green who came to the Jersey Settlement on the Yadkin River. If you happen to see anything that might help me identify the parents of my William Green please forward it on to me. I hope this message will help you find the ancestors you are searching for. Merry Christmas! Tom Green

    2. Hi Dave, Some time ago you asked me about the Home in New Jersey where Gen. Nathaniel Green wintered in 1779. I believe the home was that of Mrs. Van Veghten, located between Bound Brook and Somerville. This was the home where the General held the dance and Gen. George Washington danced with Catharine Littlefield Greene for three hours without either sitting down. Gen. Greene sat at a table and intertained Martha Washington while her husband danced with his wife for three hours! I can emagine what my wife would have said about that! Hope this helps with your research. Tom Green

    3. Here we go... My grandfather, James Alvin Greene, was born in 1907 in Dickson Co. TN., but raised in Houston Co. TN and I have no idea where these Greenes/Greens were really from. His siblings were: Walter, Wallace, Ethel, Martha, Ida. His mother was Laura Medcalf/sometimes spelled Metcalf who was born in Humphreys Co. His father (WE THINK) was James Thomas Greene, but are not sure because he left Laura with six children when my grandfather was a baby. The old man's name was not allowed to be mentioned, nor were the Greenes, and my grandfather never knew his father, although WE THINK he died around 1942 (have no idea where he was buried), and my mother believes he worked in Nashville at Worthen Bag Co. Walter and Wallace later lived with their father and the family heard they dropped the "e" from the end of the name. I have gotten absolutely no where on these lines, cannot find the right census in the right county apparently... and the family left living knows nothing. I cannot even locate any cousins descending. If any of this means anything at all to anyone I surely would appreciate it. jan Houston Co. TN Coordinator: www.rootsweb.com/~tnhousto/index.htm Stewart Co. 3. To those of you looking for Green(e) family members from Killingly and Thompson, Windham Co., CT, I would recommend C. W. Bowen's "The History of Woodstock Connecticut," Norwood, Mass.: privately printed, the Plimpton Press, 1935, v. 6, pp. 54-96. It is an 8 volume work, and only 150 copies were printed. I borrowed it from the NEHGS Library, call number F/104/W9/B67. There are lots of Greens from the colonial period to early this century. George L. Greene
