Hi Tom and other Green(e), researchers: I'm interested in your William Green line. My ggg-grandfather was John T. Greene (spelled with and without the "e"). He was born in 1821, GA (according to the 1950 Clark Co., AR census.) He died in 1883, Clark Co., AR and his obituary says he arrived in Clark Co. in 1838. His wife was Lucy (or Martha Lucy) Jordan. John had a brother named Peter. I don't have a birth date for him, but there is eveidence that he fought in the Civil War and died in 1909. He founded the Mountain Springs Water Co. in Garland Co., AR. Their mother's name was Nancy. I don't have a maiden name for her. She is supposed to have been born in VA. Does any of this fit in with your Green notes? Stacy King king@mobiletel.com TBGreen3@aol.com wrote: > 3. William Mercer Green, born about 1786 in Burke County, NC. My g-grandmother was Cynthia Ann Green, born 1825 in OH, the daughter of John Green. I am trying to find her mother. There was a marriage of a John Green and Mary Ann Cruzan 1/3/1822 in Brown Co. OH. Other records I have show that a "John and Mary Ann Green were early land owners in Rush Co. IN." My John Green had two children born in OH and two more born in Rush Co. IN (1830 and 1833) by his first wife who was possibly Mary Ann Cruzan. There was also a marriage between a John Green and Sarah Crampton in 1824 in Montgomery Co.OH. My question is which one, if either, was the mother of Cynthia Ann, born 1825 in OH and Elizabeth, born 1828 in OH. The other two children of John Green and this first wife were Olivia, born 1830 and Newell, born 2833, in Rush Co. IN. Hi Dawn, I agree with Tom that you have some families confused. As Tom Stated, the William Green you have listed in your message does not belong with this family and is the grandson of the William Green who died in NJ in 1722. The William whom married Phebe Moore is buried in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Ewing NJ. Other headstones in a line with his are: sons - Elijah & Samuel; daughter - Mary; wife - Phebe; a stone with partial name "ABAIL"- might be Phebe's sister, Abigail Moore. One other stone is said to belong to the William who died in 1722. To make matters less confusing I'll refer to the Williams as 1 2, & 3, with William3 being the William you mention. Some researchers believe that William3 inherited William1's brick house that is still standing today on the campus of Trenton State College, directly from William2 who had inherited it from William1. Published works by Robert Reeder Greene allude to this fact as does a plaque placed on the house in 1927. However, William1's will clearly states that he left his newly built brick house to his eldest son, Richard and that his younger sons, Joseph & William2 were to share the house & plantation that William1 had purchased from John Severns. it is my opinion, that, perhaps, someone has exercised a little literary license here or that the full story has not been discovered yet. I would be interested in what other Green(e) researchers think. Here is what I have on William3's family: Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM3 GREENE III (WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born 1743, and died 1815. He married PHEBE MOORE, daughter of SAMUEL MOORE and REBECCA GREENE. Notes for WILLIAM GREENE III: William was a soldier in Washington's Army at the Battles of Trenton and Monmouth. Listed in Feb. & Mar. 1777 on the Muster Rolls Of Captain James Shaw's Company of New jersey Volunteers in the regiment commanded by Colonel Joseph Barton. Children of WILLIAM GREENE and PHEBE MOORE are: 2. i. SAMUEL4 GREENE, b. Abt. 1791; d. April 01, 1859. ii. ENOCH GREENE. More About ENOCH GREENE: Fact 1: Relocated to Georgia. iii. ELIJAH GREENE, b. Generation No. 2 2. SAMUEL4 GREENE (WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1791, and died April 01, 1859. He married MARY PERRINE. Children of SAMUEL GREENE and MARY PERRINE are: i. MARGARET ELIZABETH SCUDDER. 3. MARY4 GREENE (WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1788, and died March 02, 1858. She married JOHN JONES, son of BENJAMIN JONES and CATHERINE ANDERSON. Children of MARY GREENE and JOHN JONES are: i. ENOCH GREEN5 JONES, b. March 12, 1811, Ewing Township, Mercer Co, NJ; d. May 04, 1882; m. MARGARETTA HAY. ii. AMOS SCUDDER JONES. iii. LYDIA JONES, b. Hi John, Here is the info I have on my family. William Green, born February 6, 1762 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He married Kezziah Patton, born about 1763, in her parents home in Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina on January 9, 1781. Several cousins have spent many years attempting to identify the parents of these two pioneers. Their children were: 1. Thomas S. Green, born October 24, 1781 in Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina, and married Sarah Harden in 1805 in Burke County, NC. Thomas died in 1857 in Georgia. 2. John Green, born about 1784 either in Orange or Burke County, NC. Nothing else is know about John except he MAY have gone to Texas to fight in the Texas revolution. 3. William Mercer Green, born about 1786 in Burke County, NC. He married Nancy Porter October 29, 1811 in Burke County, NC, and the couple moved to Haywood County, NC where their son William M. Green was born. The couple moved their family to Georgia in about 1830 where both died. William died March 24, 1847 in Carroll County, Georgia. This is my direct line. 4. Sarah "SallY" Green, born about 1790 in Burke County, NC, and married Matthew Hicks January 27, 1814 in Burke County, NC. Both died about 1843 in Carroll County, Georgia. 5. Silas M. Green, born about 1796 in Burke County, NC, and married Sarah W. Horton January 10, 1848 in Franklin County, Tenn. Silas died August 7, 1892. 6. Martha "Mattie" Green, born about 1801 in Burke County, NC, She married Charles Justice and Austin Pack. 7. Elizabeth Green, born about 1803 in Burke County, NC, and married Mr. Allen. 8. Anderson Clyde Green, born about 1806 in Burke County, NC, and married Sarah "Sallie" Morrison about 1827 in Haywood County, NC. Anderson Green moved to Texas and became a preacher. He died June 10, 1891 in Upshur County, NC. 9. Tillman Green born about 1810 in Burke County, NC and MAY have married Mary "Winnie" Daniels September 3, 1838 in Stewart County, Tennessee. Tillman died about 1850. 10. There also MAY have been a child named Elijah Green who died young, but this is speculation due the the belief that William Green, Sr. had a brother named Elijah Green. William Green, Sr. died in Haywood County, NC March 2, 1837. Kezziah Patton Green moved to Carroll County, NC with several of her children where she died August 1, 1849. She is believed to be buried in Carroll County, Georgia next to her son William Mercer Green and his wife Nancy Porter Green. They are buried in a family cemetery called Old Bethel Cemetery located near Villa Ricka, Georgia. I am posting this info to the Green list in hopes some one will be able to add to the family history. Hope this helps you in some way. Tom Green TBGreen3@aol.com

Hi Dawn, There are others on the Green list with much more info than I have, but I wanted to tell you that my data shows that Samuel Greene who married Sarah Bull, Margaret Gordon Kemp and Hannah Wright was the son of Major John Greene and his wife Amy Almy. I show that Samuel Greene was born January 30, 1669, and died September 18, 1720. Major John Greene was the son of Surgeon John Greene. I also do not show the same children as you do for Samuel Greene. I do have William Green born about 1743 who married Phoebe Moore born about 1753, but I show his father to have been another William Green, born 1702, who married Lydia Armitage. The father of the second William Green was Judge William Green born about 1671 in England, who married Joanna Reeder in 1692 and the couple lived in Hunterdon County, New Jersey where he died June 16, 1722. I have not identified the other Greens you show as the children of Samuel Green, but I don't believe any of them belong to this family. I will post this reply to the Green list in hopes that someone can help you with your research. Good Luck! Tom Green

In a message dated 99-01-01 10:15:35 EST, you write: << Do you know any book that traces the descendants of John of Quidnesset?? I believe he is my line, but don't have the documentation yet. I finally traced my line out of Vermont and to RI by way of an ancestor named Peleg Green. >> Hi Susan, Yes, Bill Wright from Houton, Texas published a very good book on John Green of Quidnessett, and I believe it is called "William Browning and Mary (Lewis) Greene." Bill donated several copies of this book to various libraries around the country. I show that Peleg Greene, born april 25, 1752, was the son of Timothy Greene, born June 14, 1725, and his father was John Greene born April 9, 1688, who was the son of Lt. John Clark Greene, born June 16, 1651, who was the son of John Greene of Quidnessett. Good luck, Tom Green
It was " The Day They Shook The Plum Tree" Her name was Hetty Howland Robinson and she Married Edward Henry Green of Bellows Falls, Vermont. Her daughter was Sylvia and her son Edward. A stipulation in the will of her aunt, Sylvia Howland stated that the money she left Hetty would remain in Howland hands. So when Hetty died the money was left to Ned and Sylvia and when Ned died the money was all left to Sylvia. Sylvia in turn broke the will of her Greate aunt Sylvia Howland and left the money to various charities with a few personal bequest to servants, etc. Jon
Hello Ann, No I am sorry I do not have an Asher in my family. But I will keep my eyes open for you. Where in NY are your Greens from? Mine are from Orange county, Warwick NY. Dawn
Indeed there was a Hette/Hettie Green. Many years ago I read a biography of her entitled, "THE DAY THEY SHOOK THE MONEY TREE" (or something very close to that). Sorry, but I do not recall the author. She inherited her wealth from her father of the New England area, who sold his whaling fleet just before the advent of the gas light. I don't recall very much about it, but her two children, a son and a daughter, did suffer from her love of money. She did have a talent for increasing her wealth, which was something not done "at that time". Green may have been her married name, but I'm not sure. Geraldine M. Weir weir@bayou.com
I talked to my sister in Bakersfield, CA last night and she told me of one GREEN we were supposedly related to that I had forgotten. Her name was Hetty(Hettie) GREEN. The family story goes that she was extremely wealthy and somewhat of a recluse who actually allowed her son to die because she would not call a doctor. How much of these stories are true or not is always questionable. But Hettie was a real person of that we are sure. My grandmother stated she had met her on a couple occasions. Have you ever heard of such a GREEN? Harold Williams Mesquite, TX (Dallas suburb) willhn@flash.net

Hello Tom, Thank You so much for your response! I haven't researched the family of Robert Green, born 1695 who came to America about 1712 with his uncle William Duff, who had several brothers who also came to America. Because of my sister, Lynda Jean and I being adopted by our father, Henry Brock Pinckard when we were both very young, I am just now getting started on the research of our natural side. Both Francis Marimon Green, our natural father and our adoptive father are deceased now. The time is ripe now for Green researching and it fulfills a void in my life. This is interesting information. I've enjoyed very much reading your messages. Happy New Year! Elaine Dennison hendenn@flash.net
Found this recently on another website. Thought it might be of interest to Green(e) researchers: 19th Century Naming Patterns: SONS: First: named for his paternal grandfather. Second: named for his maternal grandfather. Third: named after father or father's paternal grandfather. Fourth: named after father's oldest brother or mother's paternal grandfather. Fifth: named after mother's eldest brother or father's material grandfather. Sixth: named after father's second oldest brother or for mother's maternal grandfather. DAUGHTERS: First: named for her maternal grandmother. Second: named for her paternal grandmother. Third: named after mother or for mother's maternal grandmother. Fourth: named after mother's oldest sister or for father's paternal grandmother. Fifth: named after father's eldest sister or for mother's paternal grandmother. Sixth: named after mother's second oldest sister or for father's paternal grandmother. NOTE: there were all sorts of variations, some covered by rules and some by family decision. It was customary to name the next daughter/son born within a second marriage for the deceased husband/wife. If a father died before his child was born, the child was often named for him. If a mother died in childbirth, that child, if a girl, was usually named for the mother. Another child was commonly named for a child who had died within the family. DUTCH NAMING PATTERNS: The custom was that the lst be named for paternal grandfather; 2nd son named for his maternal grandfather; lst daughter for her maternal grandmother; 2nd ghter for her paternal grandmother. If 4 children were born then all 4 grandparents are known. Ronnie Greene RGreene431@aol.com

Hi Tom, Not as of yet. I am still waiting for the Tennessee State Library to send me the "Man from Winton", which I ordered in early December. I appreciate their help, but they are so slow. I Ordered the "Tom Green Scrapbook" by Sarah Glenn Riddell from the Texas State Library yesterday and the have already put it in the mail. As for me getting to the library to look up some hunches, this December has not allotted me the time. The reason I was asking about the "Seagull" Family Tree is this. I agree with you about Maj. Gen. Tom Green not being a Descendent of Col. Abraham Green. But I think they were cousins. I have always believed he was related to the Filmer GREEN b. 1743 which married Ann. Though I have no prof.
