Hi Green members, Over the holidays, we had to make an unexpected trip to GA and I had an opportunity to do a little research. I checked the 1870 GA census, Chatham County, City of Savannah, Ga. I found this William Greene family from Ireland and I am wondering if any of you have this family and any information on it. Many many years ago, my father told me that a William Greene connected to my dad's family moved to GA. I should have also checked the 1880 census, but my time was very limited. Here is the family that I am wondering if he belongs to us. Greene, William, age 43, Miller ??, born in Ireland and parents b. Ireland. Margaret, age 41, k.h., born in Ireland and parents b. in Ireland Charles age 15, at school, b. GA Henry ??, age 13, at school, b. GA George, age 11, twin, at school, b. GA Robert, age 11, twin, at school, b. GA Willie, age 8, b. GA ?? (can't make out spelling) age 5, b. GA Sally, age 7, b. GA Fanny Solomon, domestic servant, age 21 Since my grandfather was a twin and these people are from Ireland, I really wonder if they are connected to me. Does anyone have any information on this family???? I really would appreciate any information anyone may have. Also this William was the only William on census from Ireland. Hope to hear from someone who has some information. Thank you and Happy New Year. Sally
I offer a slight correction to your posting on the military unit that William Green served in. He was in a Loyalist regiment, lost his 300 acres he inherited from his father Samuel Green to the Committees of Correspondence, went west first to Fayette County, Pennsylvania 1784, then north of Pittsburgh to Armstrong County, Pennsylvania 1791 where he farmed, raised three sons Samuel, John, and James. Also your designators for the Williams as I, II, and III might confuse some. Sugrest (1), (2), and (3) Notes for WILLIAM GREENE III: William was a soldier in Washington's Army at the Battles of Trenton and Monmouth. Listed in Feb. & Mar. 1777 on the Muster Rolls Of Captain James Shaw's Company of New Jersey LOYALIST Volunteers in the regiment commanded by Colonel Joseph Barton. Go to this page for confirmation and further details: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/njshwbar.htm PS: There exists in the DAR a membership application in which the member (now deceased) used her ancestor William for admittance. Sorry, her data was in error. She had all details right about William but his unit of service. She chose some other William Green who did fight for George Washington. Brian Green
Hello all, Thank you for all of the posts on William Green and Samuel Green. I am still sifting through it all. Though I am not sure now that I even have the right William Green. The way this started was: I found a newspaper article on microfilm from a local paper on one of my uncles. This article was from 1900's. In it he stated how proud he was of his grandfather William Green who served in the Revolutionary War. There is a piece in it taken from a letter my ancestor received from the secretary of war, Washington it said : Washington.DC July 3 1905, It is shown by the records of this office that one William Green served as a private in Colonel John Hathorn's Regiment, New York Militia, Revolutionary war. His name appears on a receipt roll under the following heading:"We the subscribers do acknowledge to have received from Col. John Hathorn, of Warwick, in Orange county, the several certificates as numbered with their sums annexed to our names." This roll shows that on September 16, 1784, William Green received certificate No. 981-440 for (shows the amount). His name also appears cancelled on a list of certificates returned by John Hathorn for pay of hes regiment of militia for November, 1779, belonging to Orange county. Nothing further concerning him has been found on record. The records show the Henry Wisner was lieutenant colonel and later colonel of the regiment mentioned." signed F.C. Hainsworth Military secretary. It says also that he (my uncle) remembers his uncle very well. That he died when he was ninety seven years of age. 'And a story that he told him. So I called a cousin of mine in Arizona. He is not new to genealogy. I am very new to all of this. He called and sent papers that he found William Green and he has sent for records. But he listed this William as being in NJ Militia. But was checking into. After all of this I am more confused than ever. I tend to believe now though that my cousin is researching the wrong William Green.I have a William Green listed on a paper from the Dar showing William on a list from the Orange County militia Fourth Regiment Under Col. John hathorn and Lieut. Col. Henry Wisner. I know this is my 5th great grandfather but don't know where to go from here. I am sorry this is so long but wanted to explain and hope that you have some tips on where I should go from here since I know you all have a lot more experience in this than I. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you cousins, Dawn Lepre

More New York William GREEN/Es Just to muddy the waters on New York William Greens, I have the following William Green whose New York location has eluded me - although I believe I will eventually find him in Herkimer Co. A William Green appears in the town of Norway, Herkimer Co. listing of Capt. Jared Smith's Co. List dated 1811. A significant colony of New Englanders migrated from RI to Richfield/Winfield, New York. These New Englanders were purported to have been associates of descendants of Roger Williams. That certainly fits our RI GREENEs. I hope to center my further research in this area. (unfortunately, my research time is extremely limited, as are library facilities in my area.) William GREEN/E, b. 9 Jun 1737, Stone Castle, Warwick, RI. William died in New York, date unknown, location unknown. Married on 18 Feb 1762 to Comfort Green, b. 26 Jul 1738, Old Warwick, RI (dau of John GREEN and Elizabeth FOSTER). Comfort died July 1798 in New York, location unknown. William's descent is from John, the Surgeon, Green. William, b. 1737<Richard, b.1702<Richard, b.1666<Thomas, b. 1628 <John, b. 1590 Children of William Greene and Comfort Greene: Richard John Wanton Thomas Brenton/Brinton Elizabeth Comfort Charles Mary William, b. 5 Nov 1767 This gives you two more New York William Greenes (father and son) to work on. Anyone with further information on this family - PLEASE contact me. Nancy Van Valkenburg Watrous FIWATROUS@aol.com
Hi all. As NJ Greens have come up.. maybe someone can shead some light on Adelia Green born abt 1849 in Bergen County, NJ parents unknown.. Now was this person hatched...? I sent the following information to a person who has an Orange County, NY book.. Well it is hard to say.. I know they were or at least Charles was Methodist , and most of my family is Republican. However, LOL I'm not.... A clue to Charles, in the research Don Stralhe was doing Charles showed up as Vincent Helme (born 1845) son of Henry Helme and Ann Gannon, (no wonder I had trouble finding him). He died in Carbondale, PA. as did Adelia, on her Death Certificate it only states that she was born in Bergen, County, NJ.. I'm on that root list and I have looked at a lot of records and find nothing.. my Cousin Ann, who I found this July has hired someone to locate records on Adelia.. but so far nothing... Note a brother and Sister of Charles, were unknown to the researchs yet Ann had proof of their existance. Charles obit listed a Brother Joseph Helme and a sister Ellen Hill of NYC, both still alive in 1907. Also Ann had a letter written to Charles from Joseph, and since August we not only found were Charles fit into the Helmes line but also Ann located the Descentants of Joseph Helme, (b 1842 )now Joseph married a Rachel Bamper who was from Bergen County. I have a copy (old) of the ORANGE CO. PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. I lists two Greenes (no everyname index): George W, Highland Mills b. 16 Oct, 1846 hi father Horatio Nelson and Sarah Ann (Dickens) Green , b. in Monroe..the grandfather of our subject (i.e. GeoW.) was Samuel Green. His father, Samuel Green and his father-in-law, Mr. Marigold, forged the great chain which was stretched across the river at West Point for the purpose of preventing the passage of British ships.. FYI Mr. George W. Greene is a Methodist Episcopal, in IOOF, and a Republican!!!! Now, I now that a Daniel Green married into the Helme Family.. so I wonder if purhaps some place the Green's of Bergen County. (can't find any) were cousins of the Green's in Orange County, NY. The witnesses at the Wedding were a Nelson Wilson and a Henry Morgan. There was a Carrie Wilson who married John Van Horn, who Charles was friends with. I also have looked into the Naming System that everyone talks of.. the first girl in the family was named Carrie. the next (my greatgrandmother) was Mary Elizabeth Helme. Now their was a Robert Helme (Ann's Grandfather). I have not found a Robert in the Helmes line.. (clue ?) What do you think? When it comes to Adelia I sometimes feel I'm pulling at straws... ! The only other thing I can think of is that she did not like her given name.. and used a middle name Adelia. As Charles hated Vincent..and used only Charles V. Helms... Can any of you shead a spot of light in my cousin Ann's and my direction it would be great. Well there is my ideas.. got any to add to it.. (smile) Thanks. Wanda
Hi Brian, Thanks for the info. After checking out the sites you mentioned, I agree that my info on William Green3's military designation is incorrect. Back to the drawing board to find exactly where he fits in with Washington's Army. However, despite my error for my William3, Dawn, in her original message, still had info on two separate William Green families. I think her William (minus Phebe) coincides with your info. Your PS regarding incorrect DAR info is right on target. I have read posts from other researchers pointing out numerous errors in the DAR & SAR applications. Perhaps that's why some researchers become so incensed when you question possible mistakes in their info. Infallibility does not exist just because someone decided one source of documentation was acceptable while another was not. Thanks again for your help. Ron Greene RGreene431@aol.com

Here's more info on Hetty Green's ancestors from another online library. If you want more info, let me know. Jo "In 1652 Henry Howland was among the original purchasers of Dartmouth...acquired from the Indians. Subsequently, with twenty-six others, he bought the land known as Assonet, including the present town of Freetown, Massachusetts, and here his son Samuel settled..." Henry Howland married Mary Newland of Lynn, Massachusetts. They had four sons: Zoeth, who was killed by Indians and whose descendents accumulated a great fortune in land and whaling and which was later famed as the Hetty Green fortune; John; Joseph; Samuel, whose son Joshua married Dorothy Lee. They were the parents of Isaac Howland who married Katherine Howard and who begat Roba who married Henry Edminster.
Hi Harold, Found this on Ancestry.com library that I subscribe to. Don't know if it's your Hetty but sounded likely. Jo Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century. Addenda page xliii GREEN, HETTY HOWLAND ROBINSON, capitalist, was born Nov. 21, 1835, in New Bedford, Mass. By careful investment she has become a large holder of stock in sound railroad companies in the west and south, in the Chemical National bank, and in business blocks and other real estate in Chicago and other parts of the United States.
Tom, You may want to check these pages on the Samuel Green of northwest New Jersey. http://www.ptbruce.kanservu.ca/Genealogy/Whitesell/Green.html http://pa-roots.com/armstrong/ffolder/wdgreen.html http://alpha.binatech.on.ca/~bhmchin/billyg.html I am in possession of the work on Samuel Green of Northwest New Jersey by Helen Benson (plus notes) and also the Ida Crozier work on the sons of Samuel Green who migrated to Canada as Loyalists (Adam, John) after the Revolution. These researchers examined possible New England connections for the family but came up with "nothing" substantial. Their work is from the 1970's/80's but seems to be fairly complete. The connection Benson, and then Crozier, make to a Richard Green who landed at Burlington, New Jersey in the late 1600s is "thin" but better than any relation to New England Greens. As yet anyway. Also, this is a nit but I've yet to see any spelling other than without the infamous "e" . Regarding your data..." that shows that Samuel Greene was born January 30, 1669, and died September 18, 1720. Major John Greene was the son of Surgeon John Greene.." I gotta say "I don't think so". Samuel Green left a will and named all his children and died as I recall from memory ca 1760. I had responded to Dawn separately with the same web pages so she can decide on the data. Brian Green
