The final deed I followed was in DB 5 p 202, but dated May 2 1715. George Green and his wife Elizabeth to John Kendall. This was pat to George on Dec 15 1708 by the Proprietor of Northern Neck of Virginia for 885 acres. Property begins in Bald Eagle Neck, adj the Cate land of Ralph Wormslly along Bald Eagle Neck Run and also adj George Green. I did not find a will for this individual, nor other property conveyed out. But it might help someone else. Joanne VaBchVa
In deed book 5 p 200 dated May 2 1710, George Green of St Mary's Parish Co of Richmond conveyed 80 acres to John Kendall. In DB 7 p 107 dated March 16 1715, George Green of Hanover Parish in Richmond Co Va conveyed 50 acres to John Sabastine. It came from the same "885 acre tract" that George Green pat. Property begins at a gum tree standing in Francis Slaughtor's line then to a gum tree in Max__ Brown's the to a white oak in John Suttles. Joanne

My great-grandmother was Fanny Louise GREEN, 1859 -1959, b. in Dunnville, Ontario, Canada. She always claimed she was a descendant of Charles GREEN who entered the Niagara area in 1786 and settled on Lundy's Lane. I have recently been told that this is true, but I'm not 100% sure I have the lineage straight in my mind. I think her father may have been Marcene GREEN, ca. 1830 - 1909, his father being Charles GREEN, b. 1796, and his father was Charles GREEN who settled in 1786. Does anyone know anything about this? I'd really appreciate any info on this. Thanks. Wendy Standish standish@iaw.on.ca
A couple of weeks ago I told someone that I would look in my Green file for Jesse Green. I finally imputed all of the file, and I do not have a Jesse. Hope I did not raise any false hopes. Joanne VaBchVa

Hi Carrie and all, I have a copy of the Jesse Mercer GREEN document as well. He is incorrect in his statement about Gen. GREEN. You can find his correct lineage at the website of Tiffany NASH... http://www.mindspring.com/~tnash/ I have visited the Amos GREEN cemetery in Cherokee County GA, it is in the wooods near Ball Ground. Here is who's there... These are some cemeteries I indexed several years ago. It is near the city of Ball Ground in Cherokee Co., GA about a mile into the woods off Flatbottom Trail. It is on one of the highest hills around and overlooks the Etowah River. We've always called it the Jesse GREEN Cemetery. These GREENs are descendents of the William GREEN and Joanna REEDER line. Hi ! I'm new to the list and am hoping someone will be able to help me with this. I have a biography written by my GGG Grandfather Jesse Mercer Greene. In it he says his father is William Washington Green, grandfather is Amos Greene. He goes on to say that Amos' Father is Richard Greene - the son of Gen Nathaniel Greene. I have heard that Gen Nathaniel Greenes direct line daughtered out, so I don't know that this could be true. Can anyone help me? Carrie (Green) Mongillo
Still looking for parents or siblings of William Green who married Elizabeth Cottingham in Angelina Co, Tx. 1850. Children were Rutha, William, John, Samuel, Mary and Lizzie.
For any descendents of Col John Green, 1730-1793, I came across a wonderful old book (1883) called "A Brief Sketch of the Life of William Green, LL.D., Jurist and Scholar" by Phillip Slaughter. William Green (1806-1880) was the g/grandson of Col. John Green and apparently was quite a character. He was a judge of the Va.Court, a Law professor at Richmond College, and a prolific writer. He spoke only Greek, kept an office in his yard away from his house, wore a dressing gown and slippers most of the time, loved cats and frequently carried kittens around in his pockets. He ate his meals in silence while reading and would only eat when his family had left the table. He told a colleague that he would go for as long as six months without speaking to anyone but his cats.Judge Green was married to Columbia Slaughter, I presume a relative of the author, so apparently no one held his strange behavior against him!! The book also reviews many Judge Greens legal opinions, religious treatises and personal reminiscences. It's really interesting.

I am looking for information on the Green Family from Virginia who lived in Gibson County TN . My 3rd Great Grandfather was Robert Green born about 1790.Info on Robert Green, according to the 1850&1860 census he was born in 1790 or 1791. His tombstone says he died in July of 1867, Aged 87 Yrs. Born in Virginia. He was married in Culpeper in 1824 by the reverend Alonzo Walton. His first son was William P. his second was Charles and his third was Robert. If you follow the naming customs Roberts father should be a William???? His wife has a unusual name. In 1850 Mahithalem, in 1860 Mahethelun, on her headstone it is Mahefley. When I found the marriage record in Culpeper in 1824 for Methelean Pinckard and Robert Green, I was sure I found the right couple. After the children were born they moved to Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee. When he writes his will in 1864 he mentions his fathers estate in Virginia. I just need to figure out who Robert's (B: 1790) father was. I have both of there wills and found only one clue. It sounds like they were bickering in their wills about their Fathers estates. Robert changes his will in 1867 because Mathelean is claiming part of his father's estate. He is 77 at this time so I would assume his father has passed and their is some dispute ongoing over the will. When she writes her will in 1877 she is still talking about her fathers estate not being settled. I first find them in Gibson County Tenn in 1840 The children I find are William P. born in 1826, Virginia born in 1829, Sarah Ann born in 1832(my GGGrandmother), Robert TO. born in 1835, Elijah born in 1838, and Charles born in 1842. Sarah had told on of her sons that she was related to Gen. Nathaniel Green. They the middle name of Green. My Grandfather and Grandfathers were both Charles Green Phelan. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Hi All, First off, my compliments to Sue Pawley on her recommended website regarding Proof. For those who haven't read it, it is well worth the while. I was reviewing some of printed information sent by Ann Mensch to Ron Green (my cousin.) I found two Farnifold Green wills. The one dated 1759 has to be Farnifold III, since he mentions sons James, Joseph and John. He also mentions children Titus and Mary. This meshes with Alonzo Thomas Dill's accounts. The will of 1774 is probably Farnifold II. He mentions children Elizabeth, John, Farnifold and Mary. I will transcribe these for reference in the future, if someone is interested. A bond for marriage between James Green, Jr. and Margaret Cogdell is dated 20 Oct 1777 and signed by bondsman Wm. Pastuer and witness Wm. Fullerton. Based on that (supposedly) primary evidence, there is NO WAY that Margaret Cogdell can be the mother of our Gideon, born in Anson County in 1755. I think this also discredits the Farnifold to James Jr. (son of Farnifold) descendancy, but does not prove it, either. It seems that the preponderance of evidence supports this. Bill
Looking for any and all information about a Mr. MILLER who married Julia Ann GREEN of Forsyth County. She was born about 1830. They had two boys; William Russell MILLER, born about 1849, and Allison Woodville MILLER, born 18 Dec 1853. Unknown what happened to this unnamed MILLER father, but Julia and her boys are shown in the 1860 census with husband Daniel HENDERSON. Daniel went off to fight in the Civil War and never returned. Julia and her children then moved on to live in Murray County, GA, and they are found there in the 1870 census on page 556. If anybody has anymore information about this family, PLEASE write to me! Take care, Robert

You are probably awared that there is a "story" that John "The Fugitive" Greene came to America, and this use of the name "Clarke" could be the basis for the story. As I recall, John "The Fugitive" Greene, if he existed, lived before America was settled, but who knows how stories get started. Tom Green
Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply and I understand your position. I have stated before that, just because someone publishes a book, it doesn't make the contents factual. Granted, perhaps they have done the best they can; but, for anyone to say that a particular book is the ultimate authority is pure Hogwash. As you indicated, we are dealing with 200 year old records that are subject to interpretation. I had not run across that quote before on the John Greene in my original message and, during my time on this mailing list had not seen it discussed before. No offense taken and, I agree, the fun is in the chase not the absolute facts. Thanks again for your informative reply. Ron Greene RGreene431@aol.com
Hi Marian, No, the smith in my original message was a gentleman with the last name of smith. I do have 3 Smith Greene's in my database; however, none were born in the Northeastern states. (1) Smith Greene, b. abt 1850, most likely in NC. (2) Smith Greene, b. abt. 1846, poss. NC, d. 1865. (3) Smith T. Greene, b. March 110, 1837 poss. NC, m. Caroline Lucinda Watson. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Ron Greene RGreene431@aol.com
I ran across a book on the Web titled "Descendants of Joseph Greene of Westerly, R.I." by Principal Frank Greene. In his introduction he quotes from another book, "The Greenes of Quidnesset" by Professor Ray Greene Huling (1883-1884). The quote concerns a John Greene emigrating from England to RI (Wickford, North Kingston) about 1639. The quote: "A tradition exists, both among his own descendants and in the Warwick family of Greenes, to the effect that he came hither from England, and had formerly borne the name of Clarke instead of Greene. The change of name, if, indeed, it occurred, may have been made for the purpose of gaining permission to leave England for America. 'Godly deceptions' of a similar kind were not unknown in those trying days. Smith had left Gloucestershire (England) for New England, and again Taunton for Narragansett, 'for his conscience' sake,' says Roger Williams; possibly young Greene was of a family sufficiently obnoxious to the authorities to render desirable a change of name as well as a change of residence." If the above is accurate, perhaps that explains the lack of any link between the New Jersey/ North Carolina Greene's and the Rhode Island Greene's. Thought maybe some of you might have some thoughts on this or have run across it before. I would be interested in your comments. Ron Greene RGreene431@aol.com
