I am trying to find information on Elizabeth ( Betty) Virginia Green born about 1667 in England and died 1730-1766 in Gloucester Co. Ware Parish, Va. She married Robert Pryor born about 1663 in England and died after 1704. I am not sure about Elizabeth's birth date. Thanks in advance for any help. Dianne
Hi all, Sounds like Bill's Green was no genealogist. More than 80 percent of people in time get interested in where they came from, their parents, grandparents. Genealogy is just that, a study of one's parents. Sounds like Mr. Green (below) already knew more than he wanted to know about his parents, and that may have been his response to that knowledge. At 10:33 AM 1/20/99 PST, Bill Green wrote: >Hello Tom, >I have finily received the the Book "The man from Winton" by Nathan >Green Jr. I found this on page 30-32. So many people are offering to help type and post information online, here is a way to help that many of us had not thought about. Hats off to Lori for thinking of a very important way to help fellow researchers. Nancy Watrous FIWATROUS@aol.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following email was posted to the Cook County, IL Mail List. This lady is to be commended for what she has done to help all of us in our research. If each and everyone of us would do what she has done, in her own parish, our searching would be a lot easier. Please do not contact me! I am only forwarding her email. Her address is at the end of her posting. ______________________________ Hello List: I m relatively new to the list, just a few months. I would like to share a recent experience involving some volunteer work which resulted in a wealth of information which can be used by many future researchers. In the last few days there have been some postings highlighting the problem of family information hidden in church documents, frequently unnoticed until a persistent family investigator takes the time to root it out. Recently I had a similar experience. I scheduled a visit with the parish priest in the neighborhood where my immigrant grandparents married and raised their family. I gave the priest one of the surnames I was researching and a week later we met for close to 3 hours pouring over the baptismal and marriage registers. Prior to my arrival he had looked through a church Jubilee book from 1923 which was a pretty thorough history of the founding of the church. He had identified one reference to the surname I was researching and during this time we found a second reference to the other side of the family. I was very taken with the book and a few months later I asked the priest if I could scan in the entire 200 page volume. He thought I was nuts for wanting to do this but was good natured about it. I spent 2 days at the rectory with my PC and scanner. There were over 100 pages dedicated to family portraits and biographies many including the year the person or family came to America and where they had lived before settling in Chicago. There were also many pages of business advertisements giving additional information about how they earned their living. With the priest's permission the entire volume has been sent to a Genealogical Society. It has a website containing all the names indexed from many other church jubilee books, all done by volunteers. I took extra time to index "my" jubilee book. The end result was 31 pages of names (hundreds of them) and not 2 but 18 references to my family members (plus school pictures of aunts and uncles which would never have been identified otherwise). Once posted, other family historians will have an opportunity to read about and see their ancestors as well. In the next few months these names will be posted added to the SGS (Slovene) section of the www.feefhs.org website. The church is benefiting also. I am leaving a complete volume of the book / name index. This will keep the fragile original from incurring more damage plus help the church secretary with future inquiries. All she has to do is turn to the index to see if the family is mentioned, then turn to the pages and head for the copy machine. Maybe some of our other Cook genealogists might consider approaching the Cook County churches important to their family histories and volunteer to copy one of their Jubilee books and offering to index its names. Think of how much information there is sitting on shelves because the church office staff do not have the time to spend on our requests. Being able to do this was easier than I thought. Maybe volunteering to do the grunt work is all it would take to get a lot more information out into the open. Maybe if enough volunteers did this we would have something valuable to share with the rest of the listmembers. So, if anyone has been researching ancestors from St. Stephen church in Chicago and coming up empty you can e-mail me privately with your inquiry. The index has many names but not all names of everyone who worshipped there. Lori Aulo00@aol.com

Hello Tom, I have finily received the the Book "The man from Winton" by Nathan Green Jr. I found this on page 30-32. I thought you might find it interesting. "Nat Grafton's family was not one of the F. F. V.'s, so called. His father was an honorable, thrifty, industrious man, and his mother an energetic, kind woman. Both parents were worthy members of the Primitive Baptist Church, and thier family piety and Christian walk were unexeceptionable. Nat's father was a man of substance. He had a large farm and much cattle, and a good many servants, who, in that day, were slaves. He was a very upright man, and, though not highly educated, he had strong common sense, and was well informed. He had a great contempt for the pretensions of some of his neighbors, who set themselves up for aristocrats, and had their families represented on canvas in the shape of a tree with all the branches, and this framed and hung up in their parlors. He ridiculed their grand notions, and taught his sons that, so far as birth is concerned, they were as good as anybody. He was particular always to tell them, whenever such matters came up in the family talks, that he himself fought under Washington in the great struggle for liberty;; but that his own grandfather was a tallow-chandler in England---all f whas was doubtless true. He might have said that while his ancestor was making candles to light up the world, he was engaged in a far better business." I think this only adds to the puzzle. What do you think? Hi Paula, I had though that your Thomas Green might be related to the Malden, Mass. line, but I don't see a connection. Thomas of Malden married Elizabeth Lynde, not Elizabeth Carter, from what I know of that line. I am certainly not that knowledgable of this family and will forward your message to the "list" in hopes that George Green, or someone else can help you. Good Luck! Well, its been a while since I submitted info about my mystery ancestor....so, here goes. I know that my g-g-grandfather Gilbert Greene was born 12 February 1824, in Hawkins County, TN. He died 23 July 1894, in rural Piatt County, IL. In 1844, he married Martha Ann Ramsey in Scott County, KY. Martha was the daughter of William Ramsey and Mary "Polly" Henley Burdette. Gilbert and Martha lived out their married lives in Piatt County, just south of Bement. Every day, I look at the information that you all pass back and forth, and tell myself, that these folks could be related to Gilbert. Unfortunately, I know nothing about his ancestory, so have to watch all this great information as it goes on. Any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated. I know he had parents and a family. The question is, who were they? Thanks, Darrell Blue Yakima, WA
Wendy Good to hear the information was helpful. Your report on Charles Green, Loyalist from northwest New Jersey adds new info to my file. I will have to go over Helen Benson's work and see again where Charles may fit in. As I recall she does not list him but it is clear he was related to the othe other Greens that went on to Niagara and lower Ontario. Brian Green
Jack Green, son of Thomas Green and Sally Mederis of Pinelog, Cherokee Co, NC. Thomas Green was the son of Amos Green and Rebecca Coffey. Thomas had brothers Silas and Daniel who also married Mederis girls, sisters of Thomas's wife. Silas married Sally and Daniel married Ellen. Jack Green married Sarah Parton, date unknown to me, and they lived at Pinelog. Children were John, Pinelog preacher, Alice, Elbert, Rosscoe, Ida, Thomas, and Hattie. John married Safrona Crawford and Alice married a Crawford, Safrona's brother. Hattie married Robert Ledford. Are there any descendants of this family out there? Would love to hear from you.
