Hi List, I wanted to past this site to you. I have heard that these Federal Land Patents carry some good information. They have all states. I have a Benjamin Green that got a land patent in Ala. (among other Greens) that I am in the process of sending for. The dates that are shown is not the date they applied for the land but the date that the land was paid for in however way they paid for it. Of all the Greens that are listed in Ala. that has gotten Land Patents I know they could not have all lived there. I think at one time I have seen some research going on for Burkett Green, there is one Burkett Green listed. Thought I would send this on to the list just in case. Mell

> > ARCHIVE PUTS HUDDLED MASSES ON-LINE - Volunteers scanning Ellis Island Records. (SF Examiner 2/2/99) Climbing the family tree will take a lot less clawing as soon as a nonprofit foundation finishes a more than $15 million project to post Ellis Island immigration records on the internet. By helping people to access information instantly that previously was buried in a bureaucratic quagmire, the project will revolutionize genealogicial research for many of the more than 113 million Americans who already actively pursue their family histories. Officials at the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation in NY, the same organization that gave Lady Liberty a face lift in 1986 without any public funding, estimate that more than 40% of Americans can trace their European ancestry back to Ellis Island. "This is going to be a reference point", said Vern Deubler, Pres. of the Calif. Genealogical Society, which was based in San Francisco for a century before moving to Oakland this year. "It's going to provide people with very important leads". By the end of next year, the foundation hopes, people will be able to enter any information they know about a progenitor and the program will search more than 20 million records for a match. The software will even be able to tolerate misspellings. If a match is found, the researcher can choose to print out a photo of the ship and a copy of the original manifesto that marked the immigrant's arrival. At Fisherman's Wharf on Monday, Stephen Briganti, Chairman of the foundation, said the new database would especially help Bay Area researchers. He said the Bay Area remains one of the major hubs for Eliis Island immigrants and their descendants. Tens of thousands of immigrants came here after arriving through the port, first to fuel the Industrial revolution and later to farm wine grapes. He said first generation travelers from the main Ellis Island years - 1892 to 1924 - still live in the area. Briganti added that Californians' interest in Ellis Island immigration research, based on requests for the foundation's resources, is outstripped only by New yorkers'. The database - which organizers say could be ready by the end of 2000 - will catalog records of almost 20 million immigrants who flooded the tiny NY Harbor island. Until now, those documents have been stored at the National Archives and Immigration and Naturalization Service in the clunky microfilm format. The first phase of the project was to collect and digitize records and install computers at the museum. Now, Briganti said, putting the information on the Internet has become a top goal as well. "We're pretty confident this is going to work," Briganti said. "It's not perfect, but it's light years ahead of going to the Archives." A demonstration of the system showed that a reseacher can enter information in any or all of 11 fields, which ask for personal information such as the subject's name and country of birth, and immigration, like the subject's port of entry. Foundation spokeswoman Peg Zitko said the project got off the ground when a nationwide network of Mormon volunteers agreed to digitize the microfilm information for free. Thousands of volunteers have logged more than 2 million hours; they've entered 3/5's of the data so far. A spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City said the project was important to the church's mission. "We've always been involved in genealogy," said Dan Rascon, "because linking to our family helps us understand who we are and what we may become." Information on the project may be found at www.ellisisland.org on the internet. (And I just want you all to know that I typed this, not scanned, so I hope I get some appreciation out there!!!!!!!! Best, and good night! Terry in Calif.) PS, Please feel free to pass this along to other genealogy lists. ==== LITHUANIA Mailing List ==== Have you visited the Rootsweb Archives? http://www.rootsweb.com

They have three children living out of six that were born to this couple. In the 1910 census it shows that Marion ( now spelled Marian ) is married to a Sadie E. You posted a message on January 17, 1999 about Nathaniel Greene who married Cynthia Catherine Giles and I may have some info that could help you. Jonathan Briggs married Abigail Green who was born in 1758. Their son was named Giles Briggs, so it is possible there was some connection to the family you are researching. Abigail Green was the daughter of Nathaniel Green born June 4, 1718 who married Alice Lee on March 8, 1738. Nathaniel Green was the son of James Green who married Rebecca Cahoone, and after her death married Mary Cook born about 1722 and died October 9, 1796. James Green was the son of Lt. John Green of London born about 1645 who married Abigail Wardwell. Lt. John Greene was the son of John Greene of Quidnessett. Hope this helps you in some way. Tom Green
Hi Dave, I found some additional info on the headquarters homes for Gen. Washington and Greene tonight in the Bucks County Historical Magazine. There are several articles dated October 15, 1895 which were written when historical markers were erected on both sides of the Deleware River where the Colonial Army crossed to attack Trenton, NJ. On page 316 is a picture of the Keith house and the historical marker on the home. There is also a detailed story about the Christmas eve meeting at the Samuel Merrick house. It tell of the arrival of Gen. Washington and the other officers on the staff and the discussion of Gen. Washington's plan to cross the Deleware River and attack Trenton the next night. On page 325 of the same volume is an article by Hon. Samuel Gwinner who owned the land where the army massed before crossing the Deleware, and he tells that the Samuel Merrick home was less than 2 miles from the Keith house and was located on land then owned by Mr. Obrien. This article appears to have been written 1898, so I don't know if this will help much, but maybe someone will know where the Obrien farm was located in 1898. He also mentions that the Merrick house was located on the road from Brownsburg to Newtown. Mr. Gwinner also talks about an old log home used by Gen. Washington which was located on land owned by Thomas B. Lownes that had burned some years before 1898. Apparently stones from the cellar of this burned home were used in the foundation of the monument erected at McKonkey's Ferry ( now Washington Crossing). There is also a copy of the speech given at the ceremony for erecting the monuments, and it is great! There are powerful patriotic passages in that article starting on page 308. Tom Green

GREENs appear to originate in Michigan. Puzzle as to when or how they arrived in Wisconsin and met Seth Dana BARDEN who subsequently married ELSIE J. GREEN. Only this is that Elsie disappeared shortly after marriage and then Seth was then seen marrying a Minnie Ann FRENCH. Matthew GREEN and Amelia FORD. Daughter Elsie J. GREEN noted marrying Seth Dana BARDEN at New Haven, Dunn County, WI on 31 May 1890. Published in Dunn County News 13 Jun 1890. I have absolutely NO information on any of these GREENs prior to this ... and especially Elsie J. Green BARDEN departed via hot air balloon shortly after. I guess that probably Elsie died in childbirth possibly circa 1891/1892. I need information on this GREEN family. Witnesses to the marriage with Elsie J. GREEN were Seth's sister Mary C. CLARK wife of EDMUND A. CLARK and Franklin M. BARDEN (brother). Seth, Mary and Franklin are children of Horace McKendry BARDEN and Phoebe L. BLOOD. I need information on the CLARKs, BLOODs, FORDs and Franklin BARDEN and Horace BARDEN. About four years later Seth Dana BARDEN is noted marrying Minnie Ann FRENCH at Prairie Farm, Barron County (about 20 miles north) on 25 December 1894 by Methodist Episcopal Minister Reverend Paul HULL. Note that Reverend Seth BARDEN is with the United Brethren Church. While married to Elsie GREEN he served at FENNIMORE, Grant County, WI. So details about Elsie may center around FENNIMORE. His preaching career while married to Minnie Ann French BARDEN was in the general Barron, Dunn, Rusk & Chippewa Counties area. If anyone can relate to this CLARK, GREEN, FORD or BLOOD families I sure would appreciate infromation. Thank you, Don Barden, Satsuma, FL

In a message dated 99-02-01 01:20:19 EST, you write: << Where is the Norton Estate? I know the Nortons are related into Norton, Kent somehow but have not been able to check this. I believe their may be a connection with the Parrs and Henry the VIII giving Thomas Norton alias Green so many parish church lands. Sir John Norton of Northwood had an affair with a Green and thats where the search must go I guess . If you know of anything or learn anything please let me know. The Greens must have been a good family for Sir John to meet the Green women and then recognize her son who was born out of wedlock. Sincerely Chip Greene . >> Hi Chip, You have a lot of interesting information, and I would like to explore any possible connection to the early Greene family in England. Sir Henry Greene was the Lord Chief Justice of England and one of the largest land owners of his time. He was married to Lady Catherine de Drayton, who could trace her ancestors back to Charlemagne. It was this Sir Henry Greene that purchased the Norton estate in about 1352. The Norton estate is listed in the Doomsday book in 1086 as being located in Northamptonshire, in the Foxley hundreds (district) near Oxfordshire. I don't know if this is the same estate or not, as the one purchased by Sir Henry Greene. This is the family that Maud Greene descended from who was the mother of Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII. From your comments it would appear there may be some connction somewhere. There is a problem in identifying the father of Sir Henry Greene, in that his father apparently changed his name from Sir Thomas de Broughton to Sir Thomas de Greene, and no one know why, or if this is correct. What is your throry on which Green that Sir John Norton had an affair with? Do you know the time frame of this affair? Tom Green
