    1. [GREEN] Roll Call - William Greene 1725 - 1770 western North Carolina
    2. Listmembers: I posted this information a couple of weeks ago, so sorry for the repeat, but thought I would jump in here again while we are doing a roll call. This Greene line is my maternal great grandmother's line. I also have two other Green lines belonging to my husband's side of the family. I will post those separately. I've been on the Green list for several years now. I've been working pretty diligently on this Greene line as it is "local" for me. Colonial records in western North Carolina are few and far between. I'm also working with a "defunct" county (Tryon) so their records were spread around to several other counties.   I would like further information or contact with anyone else researching the following line: William Greene b. ca 1725 possibly Rhode Island                       d. ca 1770  North Carolina   + Nancy Justice b. ca 1730 possibly Rhode Island      m. ca 1749  Mecklenburg/Tryon County, NC?      2nd m. Thomas Potter ca 1771 1)  Jarvis Greene b. ca 1750 d. 19 Aug. 1782 Battle of Blue Licks, KY     +  Sarah Griggs b. Wales (children:  John, William Griggs, and Nancy Elizabeth) 2)  George Greene b. 1755-1760 d. Menard Co., IL bur. Clary's Grove Cem.      +  Lucy Jones 13 March 1784 (had 11 children) 3)  James Greene b. ca 1760 d. 1821 Bond Co., IL bur. Greene Cem.      + Sarah Hix d/o Richard b. 1772 d. 1846 (14 children) 4)  Mary Greene b. Jan. 1755 d. 1827 Madison Co., IL      + John Rotan/Rattan/Rottan Oct. 1775 ( 8 children) 5)  Esther Greene b. ca 1757 6)  Nancy Greene b. 6 Feb. 1768 d. 1856 Menard Co., IL      + Robert Armstrong 22 June 1787 (10 children) 7)  unknown sister Greene      + Absalom Matthews Sr.   Sons Jarvis, James, George and son-in-law John Rottan all fought in the Am. Rev. in Capt. Robert Porter's Co., Tryon County, NC, 1777.  Son-in-law Robert Armstrong was also an Am. Rev. War veteran.  More details are available for the children.    I have also come across information that the mother of Thomas Potter, second husband to Nancy Justice Greene Potter was a Phebe Greene who may be the daughter of Job Greene b. 1656 Warwick, RI.     If anyone has any Green/Greene line in western North Carolina during the time period of 1750-1770, please contact me.  Also, anyone with roots in the New Salem/Menard County, IL area.  This family had contacts with Lincoln at that time.   I will look forward to hearing from anyone! 1. [GREEN] GREEN roll call
    2. I'm not new to this list. Have been following for a few months, hoping to see an unusual first name in the GREEN family: Caswell GREEN, b 1805 in TN (according to Family Search) Married to Jane ? (They list no sources for this information.) Their daughter, Matilda F. GREEN, b 1823 in AL is shown as wife of my ggfather, David Nolan PATTERSON and mother of my maternal grandmother, Matilda Alabama PATTERSON, b 1860, Franklin County, AL m. Thomas Benton NORMAN Do any of these names ring a bell? We have been listing Matilda F. GREEN, my ggmother, as Matilda F. BATES. Along comes the LDS and lists her as Caswell GREEN's daughter, causing great confusion! I'd love to be able to straighten this out. Any suggestions? Donnie Mechling

    3. Glad to oblige - Research of my Green(e) lineage has led to Duplin Co., NC in the late 1700's with potential ties to the Green's of Wilmington, NC early to middle 1700's. There is also the possibility that our Green's tie into the Farnifold Green, Sr. lineage of Craven Co., NC who was killed by indians in 1714. Known links are to Lott Green and his father, Thomas, in Duplin Co in the late 1700's. Lott's son, Samuel (my g/g/g/grandfather) was married to Catherine Lettica Wallace, believed to be the daughter of Robert Wallace, also of Duplin Co. Lott's sister, Temperance, was married to Joel Johnson, Sr., later found in Sampson and Bladen Counties. Reubin Green of Sampson Co. is also believed to have been a brother of Lott. Lott was born about 1765 and died about 1829. Any information this Green line most appreciated. Bill Greene

    3. I'm working on the Dutchess County, NY Green, Grien, Gryns of the early to mid-1700s, as part of my overall research into the JAYCOCKS surname. Especially interested in Christopher Green of Fishkill, and whether or not he was the same man as Christopher Greene of Rhode Island.\, and in the identity of the wife of Christopher of Fishkill, Elisabeth Van Denmark, also seen as VerMark, a surname with a bewildering number of variant spellings. 1. [GREEN] New Listowner
    2. Bill Caddell
    3. Hello GREEN Researchers: Effective today, I am your new listowner. I know many of you already, as I have been a subscriber and contributor to this list for several years. My name is Bill Caddell. I live on Lake Granbury in Hood Co., TX. I also administer the CADDELL, CADLE, CADWELL, CAUDLE, CORDELL, KEADLE, CALDER, CALDERWOOD, BATTLES, BIRCHFIELD, BURCHFIELD, BURWELL, TIDMORE surname lists, the SCT-INVERNESS and MORAY lists in SCT and the ALSTCLAI list of St Clair Co., AL. According to family lore, the progenitor of my family in America was Andrew CADDEL (b. c1730, Edinburgh, SCT and d. c1825, St Clair Co., AL and my gggg grandfather) married c1765, Orange Co., NC to Jean HENDERSON (b. c1745, VA). They had the following known children: Margaret (m. James ANDERSON), Phoeby (m. Burwell GREEN), Elizabeth (m. Lewis GREEN half-brother of Burwell GREEN), John Calvin (m. Mary JAY), Andrew Henderson (m. Susan TIDMORE GREEN), Martha (m. Henry JOHNS), Jane (m. John HALE), Unisa (m. unknown), William Riley (m. Jane GREEN), and Benjamin (m. Delila). According to tradition, Andrew CADDEL left Scotland, stowing away of a ship to America, at the age of 14. It was reported that he served indentured service for his passage. My research has led me back to Virginia, where I first located Andrew in 1751 as witness to a deed in Spotsylvania Co., VA. He next was recorded in 1754 in Orange Co., NC. Since then I have found that many of the close associates of Andrew in Orange Co., NC also came from the Spotsylvania-Hanover Co., VA area. One of which was the LEA family. Andrew, the LEAs and several others did early surveying of land in Orange Co., NC. It is reported by LEA descendants that the LEA lived in Granville Co., NC for a short time before Orange Co., NC. Several of the GREEN family married CADDEL as well as associates of the CADDEL family. I have not yet determined if Andrew knew the GREEN family in Virginia. I understand that these GREEN were in Surry, Prince George County and Charles City County, VA as early as 1650. I've been told that the progenitor for this GREEN family was Lewis GREEN Sr. (b. England :d. 1725, Prince Geo. Co., VA) and wife Susannah GRIGGS. Then, William GREEN Sr. (m. Mary) and William GREEN Jr. (1st m. unknown, 2nd m. Lucy TYUS). 1787 is the earliest date that I find which mentions a GREEN (Lewis GREEN) and Andrew CADDELL together in Caswell Co., NC. Lewis was the son of William GREEN Jr. and his first wife (name unknown). Lewis married Elizabeth CADDEL (daughter of Andrew CADDEL) in Dec 1789. In Jul 1789, Burwell Green married Phoeby CADDEL (daughter of Andrew CADDEL). Burwell, half-brother to Lewis, was the son of William GREEN Jr and his second wife, Lucy TYUS. The family remained in the Orange/Caswell/Person Co., NC area until around 1800 when they moved to Pendleton Dist., SC. Pendleton District land records show Burwell GREEN owned large tracts of land there. The family left Pendleton District and settled in Alabama in about 1818 at the time it became a state. They were in the TUSKALOOSA (later changed to TUSCALOOSA) and St Clair areas. They were in the 1820 census of St Clair County. Descendants generally scattered across the northern half of Alabama. I have been researching the CADDELL(L) name and variations for the last 40 years. For the past 15 years I've concentrated on Scotland research. I've been to Scotland twice and have found much information on the origin of the family in Scotland. My early research is at "http://www.castles.org/Chatelaine/CALDER.HTM". If I may be of assistance to any of you at any time, please let me know. I would like to have a ROLL CALL and, please, each of you tell of your research, brick walls, interests, or whatever you would like to say - as long as it's of genealogy related. Bill

    1. [GREEN-L] Christopher Greene and Elizabeth Denmark
    2. Sharilyn Whitaker
    3. Thanks VERY much for your post Violet. Here is the crux of my difficulties: 137 vi. Christopher Greene (#2887) was born 9 March 1696. He married Elizabeth Denmark 20 August 1721. (Elizabeth Denmark is #2888.) I need *documentation* for the marriage of Christopher to Elizabeth Denmark. I have ssen that the marriage took place ca 1718-1721, and places as disparate as Rhode Island and Boston, Suffolk, MA in Rhode Island Greene genealogies. What I THINK happened, is that someone found the baptism of Nelly Green to Christoffel Green and "Elizabeth van Denmark" living in Fishkill, NY in 1732, and used that to attach the name "Elizabeth Denmark" to Christopher Greene of Rhode Island, thereby making the link between Christopher of Rhode Island and Christoffel of Fishkill. While that might be true, it is not certainly true, unless we can find something else that connects these two lines. See what I mean? Do you have ANY other references to this marriage? Regards, and thanks again, Sharilyn PS. In addition to Denmark and Dunmark, here are a few variants I have found on Elizabeth's surname. She was DEFINITELY from New York! Van Den Mark, Vander Mark, Van der Mercke/n, Vande Merk, Van de Merk, variants spelling of "Deenmarken", Vandemark, Vandermark, Vandermeek, Van Dermerkan, Vandermerke, Vandermerken, Vendermark, Van de merke GROAN!!!

    3. Greetings from a new lister. Is there anyone on this list who works on the Rhode Island Greenes ca late 1600s, that has access to any of the reference materials for this family? I'm working on the NY Greens of the 1700s. Rufus has been done, and then some, because some of his descendants were early and notable Mormons. I am working on Christopher of Rhose Island, who "MAY" be Cristoffel Green seen baptising a daughter Nelly in Fishkill in 1732. I need to find information on Christopher Greene, born 19 March 1696/97 to Job Greene and Phoebe Sayles. I have what is on-line. I'm looking for documented or published information. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards, Sharilyn
