Bill, The Jersey Settlement in NC was in what was then Rowan Co. in the 1750s when it began to be settled. It became Davidson Co. NC in 1823. The Green or Greene family who came to the Jersey settlement came down from Hopewell Twp./Maidenhead -now Lawrenceville area of Burlington, Hunterdon, now Mercer Co. NJ. The notable name that appears throughout this Greene family in almost every generation for about 100 years is the name Gersham or Gershom - if you have any descendants or siblings of descendants with this name that crop up you will know that you are part of this Greene family that came from Hopewell/Maidenhead area of NJ to Jersey settlement. Many of them also married into the Hunt family that came from this NJ area to the Jersey settlement as well. ( I am a Hunt descendant - but don't know anything about my Green ancestors from a different area at present). There is a wonderful article on the families of Hopewell NJ and their story of why they left NJ and came to NC by Ethel Stroupe written for the Rowan County Register and also one by Gloria Padach written for the Rowan County Register as well. Also I wrote an article on the two settlements for the Parke Society newsletter last year. I am at work at the moment and don't have the dates of these publications. I think I also encountered it "online" somewhere (the Rowan Register articles) and believe I got it just by going to a search engine and putting in "Jersey Settlement" Rowan Co., NC....I will check and get back to the list on it. A suggestion for those new to doing their hunting on the web....whenever you're seeking information about a place, such as the Jersey Settlement, or event, try simply typing its name into your favorite search engine (such as Google.com) to see what pops up. I got about 100 hits searching for "The Jersey Settlement" (did an advanced search to eliminate "New Jersey"). Try more than one search engine to find as much as possible. Hi Bill and Steve: There may be others, but the book most people use is "Saints and Sinners at Jersey Settlement" - the Life Story of Jersey Baptist Church - by Garland A. Hendricks, c. 1964. It's in lots of libraries and on film to be ordered at the Mormon Family History Centers. I have a copy if you can not find it. I'll be glad to send you some look-ups from it, if you write to me - [email protected] My copy has no index, though I seem to recall someone else saying they had seen an index. Greens, at least mine, are on pages: 29,30, 33, 34, 35, 38, 41, 42. Hannah Green Green Baird Tompkins is on page 44,46, 52. She is my ggg-grnmother. I will post my whole Green line tomorrow, probably. It's the same as John Hawkins to this point - except his comes from her brother. Another book, which most do not know about, is "Reeds Cross Roads Baptist Church" - An arm which became a Body - by Rev. John H. Pace, Sr., c 1989. It has a lot about the Jersey Baptist Church, but not much about Greens. The first few pages give a history of churches in NC in early to mid 1700's ; then tells about how in 1795, George Reed (my gg-grandfather, a possible charter member or at least early member of Jersey Baptist Church, wanted to have a branch (or "arm" as they called it) of the church meeting closer to him so his 15 children and many slaves, and other in the community could attend easier. His wife was Martha Green, dtr. of Hannah, who was the dtr. of Jeremiah of Jersey Settlement. George Reed deeded land to Jersey Baptist Church Association for such a "arm" to be build at Reeds CrossRoads (now simply called Reeds, NC), and several members moved over to it for limited services. Later in 1838, it became an independent church on its own. In 1868 an R. S. Green is listed as clerk of Reed's Church. The Church and Cemetery are still operating. There is a memorial stone dedicated to George Reed as founder and benefactor. He also established the town which bears his name and owned much land, a freight line, and the "Red Inn" where George Washington's Boulder stands because President Washington came there to eat. If any want more about either book, write to me. Redell Reed
Anyone aware of literature that describes the Jersey Settlement of NC? Have seen many references to it but know little else - timeframe, location, members, etc. We've been unable to trace our Green's beyond Duplin Co., NC in spite of some well seated speculation. The Jersey Settlement is a possibility since folklore has it that my g/g/g/grandfather was born Reading, NJ (?). We find him in Duplin Co., NC late 1700's. Thanks - Bill Greene
Hi Betty, Thanks for responding. First question I have for you is how do you know that your James Benjamin Green is connected to the William you mention prior to having the information you seek? Or do you just suspect he is? Secondly. I think that some of the information I have on the Greens beyond my 3rd great grandfather Empsey Green is somewhat suspect. John Green who is said to have married Martha, ( whom we believe was a Hemphill ) is probably failry certain as well, but who his father is, is where I begin to feel like it may be shakey ground. I sending you and forwarding to the list as well a more detailed genealogy report that includes some notes from Bonnie Suell's book which happens to be my cousin and informant of most of what I have. Her work is not real well documented. Perhaps in the notes there will be some clues that will help It appears that Bonnie felt that our William Green's ancestry were from the NJ branch of Greens. Descendants of William Green Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 GREEN was born Unknown. Notes for WILLIAM GREEN: >From Bonnie Suell's book, "Our Green Family" "Tradition asserts that the Green family of Haywood County is a branch of that sturdy British stock that has been prominent in the affairs of Great Britain for generations. It was in the early colonial times that numbers of the Green family left their homes and came to America. Some settling in Rhode Island and others in New Jersey. It has been well authenticated that William Green, a descendant of the New Jersey families came into North Carolina a few years before the Revolutionary War and located in what was known later as the Jersey settlement on the eastern bank of the Yadkin River in Davidson County. He lived there during the period of the Revolutionary War, but it is not on record that he was a soldier. I do not know who William Green married or how many children he had, but from the records of the other Green families it would have been unusal if he didn't have a large family. I only know the name of one of his children." Child of WILLIAM GREEN is: 2. i. THOMAS2 GREEN, b. Abt. 1758; d. July 29, 1828, Rowan, Co., NC. Generation No. 2 2. John Green may have been married twice because it is reported he married a Miss Hemphill. In the 1820 census John Green has a large family without a female old enough to be a mother. I believe he remarried before 1830 and had more children with a female old enough to have more children. In 1840 John Green, between 60-70 years of age with a female between 40-70 with one son between 20-30. In 1850 John is deceased or left and Martha Green age 65 is living with her son, Empsey Green and family in Macon Co. NC. Martha Green says she was born in Burke County. Steve, My hair stood straight up when I read your message. It is only a hunch, but this seems to be a part of my line. In my line, William Green signed the charter for the Second Virginia Colony, which, I think is now Sussex County VA, which was Jamestown. I believe the only way I am going to get the documentation necessary to complete the ancestry between this William Green and my Gggrandfather James Benjamin Green, my grandfather Francis Marion Green, and my father Thomas Benjamin Green is to personally go to the Sussex county library for a week to a month, and search, search, search. My father's brothers were Woodall Pleasant (Plez) Green and James Green. Therefore, besides the many James's and Thomas's, I think there must have been a surname Pleasant in there somewhere. Also, my Green's married Powell, Hawkins, May, Woodall, Bryant, among others. And between William and James Benjamin, there was Edward Green and Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Calhoun. This may or may not help you get anywhere. Hope it does. Looking for connections to the following Greens that have married into our family. Margaret M. Green was born about 1805 in Iredell County NC. She married Ebenezer Hibbits in Iredell County on Aug. 19, 1824, and they migrated to St. Francois County MO. There are several other Greens in this same part of St. Francois County, and I'd like to find out if they are related to Margaret and perhaps they moved together. Rachel Catherine Green was born about 1820 in Rutherford County NC. She married William Hampton "Hamp" Brooks in Rutherford County on Feb. 14, 1838. They migrated to Lumpkin County, Georgia, then on to Iron County Missouri. Will be glad to share information with other descendants. Jeremiah and Mary Wiseman Greene had a son John Greene b. abt 1784 in NC. Appears to have married a daughter of Joseph Hagaman in early 1800s in NC. Perhaps Sarah Hagaman, but I have not seen a source for this. Does anyone have a source for this information? John and _____ Hagaman appear to have had a son named Hardin Otha who was born in NC, 1820 and died in 1909 in Lubbock, TX. This has been determined by circumstantial evidence. Any information concerning John and Hardin would be appreciated. They lived for awhile in the Overton/Putnam Co., TN area up to the civil war. Thanks, Greg
