right let me see, well it was a virus, and the various ways people are describing it is not the way it is travelling, or at least to me, there was no underscore (_) beofre the name, but the attachment must have had mp3 as it went for media player! my pc IS CLEAN, i HAVE NO VIRUS THANKFULLY the only way to deal with it seems tobe to be vigilent with your AV software, run it daily, run it every few hours, do not rely on Rootsweb to stop these viruses, they are not coming via rootsweb they are attaching to personal mails. I think that the way it is happening (based on the ones that came to me) I do something that many of us do, save topics that we may use later, these are being targeted, someone else said they had an email that had a familiar subject header, even one they had used, so was mine, so you would think it safe to open the mail irrispective of any attachment. just run Av software beofre you open anything and kepp it running at all times! and I have also got the email from dedah sitting in teh inbox with an attachment it is about to be blasted to death! its another virus, it has not come via rootseb it is direct from an address book and targeting the green list tonite! again be vigilantI hope that this helps all who have mailed to me on the subject and I mailed to the list to avoid any concerns to you all. If you don't want to purchase a virus scan program, download Zone Alarm. It's a free firewall that has caught all the viruses I've been receiving. If you click on the attachment, the Zone Alarm icon shows up to let you know not to open it. I don't have the URL handy ,but you can find Zone Alarm through a search engine and download the free version. Anita
I did it and it works. I had added an update to McAfee Virus and right after that lost communication with my server which they reinstated. But most of all I had lost my Free Cell game and that was killing me. So I did as Donna said and all is well. I assume it was the virus and I am so sorry if I transmitted to you all. Put the 0's in and all will be well -- I think! My first trouble with viruses. I had replied prior to your email coming in, so you will see my previous comments, I don't think that it is actually coming via rootsweb, the emails I got were "from" Support to my email address with teh heading Liverpool docks queries something I had queried a long time ago regarding ships leaving Liverpool, it seems that a virus has entered a persons address book and sends discriminately to everyone else in the book, thus bypassing roots web, lets face it hackers are usually one step ahead! I have had 4 today too, AVG is on overtime, but mine did show attachments, the subject lines were ones that I had eother used myself or replied to some months ago! so effectively i would have opened them thinking someone had sent me further information on a particular subject! the senders were not in my address book, but that means nothing as I save emails for future reference, I am sure most of us do! thats why I asked if the sender had actually sent anything to me. Its not hers or anyones fault that these viruses are hitting us, its the hackers/virus makers. I do hope that neither Elizabeth nor anyone thinks that I was blaming them, I just wnated to be sure that I was not destroying information that I did actually need! Its really doing the rounds theis bad trans one, and in no format that I have seen posted on any list ot be aware of! High List, I only received one virus infected message today. It is pretty cleaver how it gets around your suspicions. It was not on this list but had a subject line that was from a message that I had sent to this other List last week. It had no message, just a blank box with an attachment. I normally would not open an attachment but since it was Re my message, I started to open it. Also I recognized the senders name. Luckily my Antivirus was on and stopped my doing it. Then I took a closer look and realized it had not fooled Rootsweb and gotten through. IT WAS SENT TO MY PERSONAL E-MAIL but with the Re [email protected]**** it looked as if it had come from the List. Also as some one has mentioned, when I returned it to the sender, it bounced back as no such address. So I went and looked for the address in my sent mail and all that it would show me was her Name, not her E-mail. Then a light went off and I looked in my address book and sure enough there was the tell tail underline in front of her address to prevent it from being returned so I removed it and sent it again. So far It has not been bounced Be careful!!!.........................................Bob in So. CA PS By the way glad to be back. Been off the list for some time. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Laura Greene" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> > I too have received this virus EIGHT times today from various rootsweb > senders. I understand that if you put :0000 or !0000 as a name in your email address book <without an email address> that it will keep viruses from sending to the rest of your book and a message will bounce as "invalid recipient" or something like that.
for the time being, I have received an email with an attachment from Elizabeth -Angela Guyver, re: Shadrack green I have not opened it but media placyer started for reasons best know to its self, my AV will hold in quarantine, can Elizabeth confirm via list (as rootsweb will prevent the virus from getting through)that she did or did not send email to me with an attachment before I blast it to kingdom come! Mellie, Apparently a virus is creeping into all sorts of lists. There has been some discussion on two other surname lists that I am on about a virus. Many think it is somehow circumnavigating the Rootsweb system and going through to the various lists. I don't know. I personally have not received any of the emails in question, so I feel that they are somehow being sent by someone else or someone else's computer. I received an email today on another list stating that this same thing was going on with 3 of the lists they subscribe to. I think it is best we all scan our emails BEFORE opening them. Rootsweb does not allow attachments, so I do not understand why anyone would open email attachments that appear to be from Rootsweb. I hope this is all cleared up soon. Until then, all emails will be scanned BEFORE I open them. donna :o)
I forgot to include this information which was sent to another list that I'm on and I thought that I'd share it with you. I apologize for sending 2 posts about a virus, but I felt this was important. ~Etta > "There is a new virus making the rounds that responds to mail marked > unread in a person's Inbox. Dear GREEN List, I'm also on several other lists, and have been getting warnings like this from those listings all day, and in each one the File name mentioned the word "HAMSTER", or "DOC". I will do a cut and paste of a couple of warnings that I have received today, in the hopes that they will help someone else. (Please note that the words 'HAMSTER' and 'DOC' appear in the first warning), ~ Etta POST # 1). If you receive a message with an attachment and the message body is blank DO NOT OPEN IT!!! Description: W32/Badtrans-B is a worm which uses MAPI to spread. The worm arrives in an email message with no message text. The attachment filename is randomly generated from three parts. The first part is taken from the list: FUN HUMOR DOCS S3MSONG Sorry_about_yesterday ME_NUDE CARD SETUP SEARCHURL YOU_ARE_FAT! HAMSTER NEWS_DOC New_Napster_Site README IMAGES PICS The second from the list: .DOC. .MP3. .ZIP. and the last from: pif scr If the attached file is run, it copies itself into the Windows system directory with the filename KERNEL32.EXE and changes the registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce so that the worm runs the next time Windows is started. The worm also drops a file named kdll.dll, which is the password stealing Trojan Troj/PWS-AV. If you suspect you have received a virus from a subscriber to this list please email [email protected] with details. POST # 2). We haven't had an informational post in quite a while (a regular stationery post will follow in a few minutes). Since my anti-virus program has caught over 20 emails containing worms/viruses in the past 2 days, I thought it was time. :) A new worm hit the web Nov. 24.....W32.Badtrans.B @mm......this is different than the other Badtrans worm and obviously it is spreading fast! Please make sure you update your anti-virus programs immediately!! For more info and how to remove this worm go here and click on the name of the worm. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ If you don't have an AV program, please consider installing one. Green list be careful with those viruses, as soon as you open them they automatically send to all of your email addresses. Scan before you open! Colleen "Green" Lopez --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! GeoCities - quick and easy web site hosting, just $8.95/month.
I too have received this virus EIGHT times today from various rootsweb senders. If you have Outlook, the email will not show having an attachment - the attachment is embedded within the email and immediately tries to execute itself when you preview the email, or just open it. This virus has found a way to work around Rootsweb's prevention because it does not show itself as an attachment per se, so Rootsweb servers are not recognizing it and is letting these emails go through. Trust me, your sender does not know she sent it! Hello again Green family, Still seeking the elusive Thomas Green b. abt. 1775 in VA and died 1865 in Fannin Co., GA buried in Harmony Cemetery. As of this date, I've searched for almost 5 years to no avail for some kind of idea on Thomas' parentage. As far as I know...(take that for what it is)...Thomas' wife's name is Agnes. She is supposedly buried next to him at Harmony, and while there is no headstone identifying her, you can tell that there is a grave there. The ground is all sunken in like many of the other graves in that particular graveyard. If there is anyone out there with any kind of lead whatsoever, please contact me, as I will definitely follow-up on it. Kim Bates

My MC MASTER line were in New York in 1800 when Levi MC MASTER Sr. was born and he moved to Huron County, Ohio about 1833 where his 4th child was born. His son Levi was the 5th child and he grew up and moved to Michigan. Everywhere this family lived there were members of the same GREEN line. I have not been able to make the connection between the GREEN and MC MASTER families as yet and how my Willis GREEN became a Mc Master. MC MASTER. There is no record of a legal adoption in the county in Michigan that the GREEN and MC MASTER families lived. The older members of my family said that Willis was raised by Levi MC MASTER and took the MC MASTER name. Does anyone know anything about a Willis or William GREEN born about 1870 who was "adopted" by Levi and Mary Ann (CHILD) MC MASTER? His "adopted parents were born in Ohio. Levi was one of 12 children of Levi and Charity (NEWBUY) MC MASTER. Willis was suppose to have been born in Tuscola County, Michigan and that is where he lived with Levi and Mary Ann. All I know is his birth surname was GREEN.
