    3. Gretna Green in Scotland (famous for cross-border marriages from England) had the largest Munitions factory in the world in WWI; from "Gretna's Secret War" by Gordon L. Routledge, 1999 (reviewed in Family Tree Magazine September 2006 page 19). The factory, 9 miles by 2 miles, required 30,000 munition workers and 10,000 construction navvies. They were accomodated nearby eg in Carlisle, England. At Carlisle, when 5000 workers arrived by train one landlord had 1000 whiskies lined up! This led to the local Liquor industry (158 pubs & 4 breweries) being nationalised, which lasted to 1971.
