    3. They were part of Kitchener's New Armies of which there were six, each of about 100,000. They were volunteers until Jan 1916, after which date conscription was introduced. Members signed for a minimum of three years or the "duration. " All the so-called "Pals" regiments were Service Battalions. As a matter of interest, it has a different meaning in the Canadian Forces.
