As a matter of fact, an estimated 35 thousand Americans served in the CEF during World War One. many, but by no means all, remained with Canadian forces after Wilson joined the war in April 1917. This really throws off your accounting...if we are going to get hung up on nationality. By the way, in 1914-1918, Americans serving in foreign armed forces by law lost their citizenship.
