The British Indian Army of 1914 was officered almost entirely by British subjects, King's Commissioned officers many of whom were schooled in the languages of their troops. The entire Indian subcontinent (now Pakistan, Bangladesh and India) was a British colonial possession until 1947. The 39th Garawal Rifles were part of the Indian Army Corps fighting on the Western Front in 1914-15. For a history of the British Indian Army on the Western Front in WWI see: Sepoys in the Trenches, Gordon Corrigan, Tempus, 2006.
