    1. [GREATWAR] Advice Rootsweb List WW2
    2. John Milner
    3. I have just had a look at the Archive on the WW2 List and it appears to be slanted towards the US forces, could anyone confirm or deny if this is the case, information I am after concerns the British Army and I don't want to subscribe if I am having to wade through e-mails about US units, of which I know very little. Thank You Regards John Milner

    1. [GREATWAR] Gretna Green & Carlisle
    2. John Wilson
    3. Gretna Green in Scotland (famous for cross-border marriages from England) had the largest Munitions factory in the world in WWI; from "Gretna's Secret War" by Gordon L. Routledge, 1999 (reviewed in Family Tree Magazine September 2006 page 19). The factory, 9 miles by 2 miles, required 30,000 munition workers and 10,000 construction navvies. They were accomodated nearby eg in Carlisle, England. At Carlisle, when 5000 workers arrived by train one landlord had 1000 whiskies lined up! This led to the local Liquor industry (158 pubs & 4 breweries) being nationalised, which lasted to 1971. 3. Hello Howard, You may send a copy to me as a JPEG attachment. Please try to make the image as clear and as large [within reason] as possible. If there are parts of the picture, like shoulder titles, please also try to make a separate enlargement or zoom of those areas. Also [and every tiny bit of information may help] if there is any writing or inscriptions on the picture, on the back of the picture, names or places names etc please also include them as notes with the image. I make no guarantee but by all means will have a look for you. 3. Hello Have you tried putting his name into www.nationalarchives.gov.uk and checking his name on the Medal Index Cards? You may get a long list depending on his name but it is worth a look. You only pay if you want to download a specific card. Steve IanGDurham@aol.com wrote: Hello List, Thanks for all of your replies and interest. I have been trying to find out if a great grandfather of mine served in WW1, he was British, living in England and have found nothing. On his death certificate, 1970, it was noted that he had had scarlet fever in childhood so I thought that it may have left him unfit for service, your replies seem to confirm that. 3. Hi, While I do not know much (anything) about this, I was talking to a lady the other day whose son had scarlet fever as a toddler, and it severly affected his hearing and therefore his early schooling and he required several operations to improve the problem. The boy is now about 15 or so. Maybe their hearing wasn't up to standard?
