    3. Derek, Thank you very much for drawing my attention to the http://www.wargraves.org.uk/ photo site. I found one of my relatives there but two others were not shown, including one who was awarded the DCM in WW1. Fortunately, due to the kindness of another member of this list who lives in Canada and went to Heilly cemetery a few years ago and while there saw my relative' s gravestone and photographed it for me, I now have a photo of his gravestone. Now, thanks to your telling us about the war photo group, I will send the photo taken at Heilly to them, along with another photo taken of his father 's gravestone which is on the CWGC site but has not yet appeared on the group 's war photos wonderful site. Actually, this is the second time this week that, in the first instance , someone in the group has taken the trouble to send information to the group which is useful to all of us and I want the person, in this case, Derek, to know that their thoughtfulness is much appreciated. The other instance was earlier, in the week, when Steve sent me a photo he had taken while on a trip to Ypres for which I have already thanked him. Their actions give me the opportunity to raise a point about the egalitarian nature of the group which is not always as clear as it should be. Random acts of kindness by any member of the group for the benefit of any of us should be seen to be appreciated by all of us or they will not continue to be forthcoming. In my opinion, all contributions from any individual members of the group are just as worthy as are the valuable contributions from some of our experts. If this idea is not accepted , then we could create a situation in the group similar to George Orwell's Animal farm where all the animals on the farm were equal except that some were more equal than others. I don 't subscribe to that notion at all. Patrick Holland. Perth Western Australia. 1. [GREATWAR] FINDING ARMY SOLDIERS
    2. Hello Fellow Researchers, When I started research in the early '90's, I tried to locate records on my two uncles from Bayonne, NJ, whose death certificates indicated they served in WWI. I was unable to find anything through the Army, since I had no information to give them except their names and birth and death dates. I contacted the Navy and found one uncle. When I called the army base in Bayonne, they were in the process of closing and couldn't help me. Neither could the NJ VA. Are any of the Army records on-line now? Or is it still just as difficult? Any help will be appreciated. Nancy

I think that it's likely that the following soldier is the one you seek. Note how his surname is spelt Johnstone, in the same way as the brother you found: http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1656862 Name: JOHNSTONE, JAMES Initials: J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Leicestershire Regiment Unit Text: 2nd Bn. Memorial: BASRA MEMORIAL Assuming the brother was Herbert, Soldier's Died in the Great War has the following information for the two men. Notice how James and Herbert enlisted and resided in the same place, which ties the two men together pretty well. Regl No 6872 Name JOHNSTONE, JAMES Rank PRIVATE Date of Death 13/01/1916 How Died Killed in Action Regt Leicestershire Regiment Bn 2nd Battalion Born STONEY GATE, LEICS Enlisted LEICESTER Resided OADBY, LEICS Where Died MESOPOTAMIA Regl No 43578 Name JOHNSTONE, HERBERT Rank PRIVATE Died 28/04/1917 How Died Killed in Action Remarks FORMERLY 5059, LEICS REGT. Although quite a lot of men in their 50s did serve, in normal circumstances 56 was too old to have been in the Army at the lower end of the rank scale. >David McNaught WILSON died 10 Oct 1917 There are a couple of David Wilsons who died on that date listed in the CWGC database - do you have a place of birth or an address to compare with Soldiers Died in the Great War? Pressing my nose to the screen(!), I reckon that the badge in the first one depicts a grenade with a scroll below, and may well be that of the Lancashire Fusiliers, with the scroll partly hidden by the leather chinstrap - see the photo at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110045309959 In the second photo, the badge is probably a flaming grenade, and in view of what you say about your relatives, could easily be that of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers - see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180039485434 However other Fusilier regiments also wore this design of badge - see for example the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Royal Munster Fusilier, and Northumberland Fusiliers. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230037631657 and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180034916163 The badge in third photo could well be that of the Royal Engineers, but I'd like to see a larger version before committing myself further. 3. Hello Peter, Basically what happened with all regiments was that as they duplicated the # Battalion became the 1/# Bn and its duplicate became 2/# Bn with the 3/# Bn feeding them as they depleted, some regiments duplicated much more say like the 7/# Bn... So in short the answer you seek is that the 5th Bn became the 1/5th Bn.
