    3. Dear Mike, Thank you very much for the photo of the cemetary at Helly. My own Grandfather was killed at Juebbulpore, India in July 1917. He is commemorated on the Kirkee Memorial, although I have been told a memorial stone erected at Juebbulpore is probably still standing. I am interested in his nephew George Bennett who died in France in 1916 and is buried at Theipval I think. My interest in Heilly station is that my sister plans to visit the battlefields with a friend, one of who's relatives is buried at Heilly Station. Sorry if my original message was a bit misleading, I do realise that it is a long way from India to France. Many thanks for you help Ted ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Shingleton" <shinglma_64@btopenworld.com> To: "EDWARD SOUTHWICK" <ted.southwick@btinternet.com> Cc: <GREATWAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 09, 2006 1:31 PM Subject: Re: [GREATWAR] War Cemetaries > Ted > > I was most recently at Heilly Station a couple of months ago. > > I've put a photo of the cemetery (a general view) on my website and it > can be found here: > > http://www.resthepast.co.uk/images/DSC_0393.jpg > > Hope this is of interest. The medal roll reference can be used to look up the actual medal roll held at the National Archives. Instedad these are his regimental numbers as listed in your original post. M.G.C. Pt 10116 R.War.R 14854 M.G.C. 10116 M.G.C. 3. As a further contribution to this discussion I have asked my Sat-Nav supplier to include War Cemeteries as standard points of interest. It would be quite useful however if the CWGC could add location data to their cemeteries website that would enable one to navigate to the cemetery - just lat/long might be all that is needed. - Any support for the idea? 3. Please be aware with the Ottawa records that there are transcription errors, and you may have to do some creative spelling of names to find the correct paper. Also, you don't always get a full service record, and invariably you will not find out any details of the death unless it was in a hospital outside mainland Europe. The records were culled, and much of what you pay for in the photocopying is duplicative, though you do usually get the full pay records. Good luck in your searches. Peter

Have look at this link to the CWGC Web Site for cemetery details and location. http://www.cwgc.org/search/cemetery_details.aspx?cemetery=27100&mode=1 As to your grandfathers five brothers, sadly [in research] we seem to know more about those who died than those who survived. Before finding if they were conscripted [conscription introduced in January 1916 with the passing of the Military Service Act calling for enlistment of unmarried men between 18 and 41] or enlisted it might be easier [sic] to find what Regiment or Corps they belonged to. 3. Hi Ted, I don't know where you are but in Canada there is an online resource for Canadian soldiers of WW1. If you're fortunate enough to be dealing with Canadians go to http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/02010602_e.html The Attestation papers (papers at joining the CEF) are digitized and online and the full service record is available for about 30 dollars canadian (depending on the number of pages) follow the link available on this website to find out more about that. The list follows the convention: Name, Rank, Unit, Execution Date, Offence, NA Reference [where applicable], Cemetery were commemorated. Regards Peter Fellowes

    1. [GREATWAR] Poetry on returning home
    2. Barbara Dennis
    3. I am after a poem or song or similar for the men that returned home (either WW1 or 2) & how they adapted. I tried googling war + poetry &poetry + remembrance - but so far I have only found things on the people who didn't come home. I have a scroll made up for the men who died, but there are just as many family members who came home & to me need something to identify them with. All I can say is thoughts like - how hard it was to leave behind what they saw / their mates / memories (good & / or bad) / readjusting to civie life / that even though they came home I am just as proud of them as those who didn't return. Thoughts like that. This can cover any of the forces - Navy, Merchant, Army, Airforce. Does anyone have any favourite poems that may tie in with what I am after? Or any other ideas on trying to google to come up with a suggestion. Many thanks, Barbara Dennis Auckland, NZ
