    2. Peter Metcalfe
    3. This is not a WW1 question but I don't know which List to subscribe to so I'm hoping someone can advise me please. Whilst in the Preston Cemetery, Tynemouth on Wednesday I came across an old military headstone which could be 19th century. The inscription is as follows:- John Prendergast Co. D 13 Conn. Inf I would love to find out who this man was so any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards Peter

    3. On a recent visit to the Preston Cemetery, Tynemouth to search for a grave of a Royal Navy man who served on HMS Nottingham which was sunk in the North Sea in 1916 I was surprised to see that his and many other military headstones there were made of what looked like blue marble. I have only ever seen those made of white stone and slate before so I was wondering if this is unusual and for what reason. Most of the men were seamen and the others were army. Also would I be right in saying that the white marble headstones were for those who were killed in action or died of wounds and those made of blue slate were for those who died for other reasons whilst still serving or between conflicts eg there are two made of slate in my local cemetery of a soldier who died of illness in 1920 and another who died of pneumonia in 1918 whilst still doing basic training. 2. Canadian WWI veteran dies at 106 Harper urges Canadians not to forget Percy Dwight Wilson and his comrades Last Updated: Wednesday, May 9, 2007 | 4:25 PM ET CBC News Percy Dwight Wilson, who was Canada's second-last surviving veteran of the First World War, died in Toronto on Wednesday at the age of 106. Wilson was just 15 when he lied about his age and headed overseas with a Toronto battery in 1916, despite his parents' objections. When he arrived in England, his age was discovered and he was sent back to Canada without ever having fought. First World War veteran Percy Dwight Wilson, shown waving goodbye from the veterans wing at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto in November, lied about his age to enlist. He died Wednesday at 106. (Canadian Press/Frank Gunn) His son, Paul Wilson, said his father knew the risks involved but was desperate to serve his country. "I think maybe in 1914, when the war broke out, some of the young boys signing up thought it would be a lark," Paul Wilson said. "By 1916, there had been thousands upon thousands of them just killed. They had some horrendous battles." When Wilson got back to Canada, the teenager re-enlisted, but was discharged again because of his age. The second time, he was let go before he even left for Europe. At the start of the Second World War, Wilson again tried to re-enlist but was told he was too old. Continue Article The Prime Minister's Office announced Wilson's passing Wednesday afternoon in a statement offering condolences to his family. "All Canadians, no matter where they live, should not forget him, and the others of his generation, who gave so much for their country," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said. "The sacrifices made and remarkable bravery displayed by Mr. Wilson and his comrades is a lesson for us all." Born Feb. 26, 1901, in the southwestern Ontario town of Vienna, Wilson was one of more than 600,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders who joined the military to fight in what was then known as the "war to end all wars." Newfoundland and Labrador did not join Confederation until 1949. About 66,000 Canadians died in the four-year conflict. Wilson went overseas with the 69th Battery of Toronto, after doing basic training in Petawawa, Ont. A year before his deployment, he served as a bugler with the 9th Mississauga Horse militia. First Nov. 11 with no WWI veteran at hospital After the First World War, Wilson met his wife, singer Eleanor Dean, while studying music at Toronto's Royal Conservatory. The couple and their children eventually moved to Stratford, Ont. Wilson worked for Bell Canada for 47 years, and also sang semi-professionally. After his wife died in 1993, he spent the last years of his life in the veterans wing of Toronto's Sunnybrook hospital, where he often sang to staff and other residents. Staff member Suzanne Plowman said Wilson will be missed. "I knew as soon as we saw the flag go down [at the residence] that something had happened," she said. "This [Nov. 11] will be the first Remembrance Day we have without a World War I veteran here." His death leaves John Babcock, who lives in Spokane, Wash., as the last surviving Canadian to have served in the 1914-18 war. In recent months, the families of First World War veterans have expressed hesitation about having a state funeral for the last soldier to die. Veterans Affairs is now considering holding a ceremony commemorating all First World War veterans collectively when Babcock dies. With files from the Canadian Press

    3. Great War veteran Dwight Wilson dies at 106 Canadian Press There is only one Canadian veteran of The Great War left after Dwight Wilson died in Toronto today at 106. The Prime Minister's Office made the announcement this afternoon, offering condolences to Wilson's family and saying Canadians should not forget him and the contributions he made to Canada's effort in the First World War. Born Feb. 26, 1901, in Vienna, Ont., a village near the Lake Erie shore about 20 kilometres south of Tillsonburg, Wilson was one of more than 600,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders who joined the military to fight in what was then known as the "war to end all wars." About 66,000 Canadians died in the four-year conflict. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the sacrifices and "remarkable bravery" of Wilson and his comrades is a lesson for all. His death leaves only John Babcock, who lives in Spokane, Wa., as the last surviving Canadian to have fought in the 1914-18 war. Babcock, also 106, has said he doesn't want a state funeral.

    3. Thank you Alistair, I have been to the Green Howards Museum a couple of years ago. Roger the manager was really helpful. Regarding the diary, I don`t know if they have a copy there. I`ve posted them the question, but they are closed for a while, until the end of the month I think for refurbishment. The P.R.O. however does have the 2 or even 3 diaries for 11th East Yorks Regt and 11th West Yorks Regt. Thanks for the interest and your suggestion. Regards. George. 3. I would not clean it unless I had talked to someone and knew it would not damage the casing, if you can use a small brush and try to brush off any dirt (and please keep the dirt, I know this sounds ridiculous), but its possible if you want to go that far, use the dirt to find out exactly where and when it was fired - Can you translate the mm into inches for me, my mind don't do metric very well. delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tony Holkham" <Holkham@compuserve.com> To: <greatwar@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2007 9:56 AM Subject: [GREATWAR] GREATWAR Digest, Vol 2, Issue 78 | To: Great War List | Re: Somme Bullet | | Many thanks Delilah and Ray for your replies. I have been given a bullet casing found | on the Somme (where my grandfather fought with the 19th Manchesters). | | On the base are several numbers and letters. Looking at it as a circle, in | an arc at the top are the letters I A R T D I, and in an arc at the bottom | the letters E B S I. Separating these two arcs on the right are the numbers | 02 or 92 horizontally together, and on the left what look like the numbers | 1 (with a tail as in continental writing style) and possibly 2 (or it may | be a Z). | | The casing looks to be about 12mm across at the base, narrowing gradually | at first then more so in the top 10mm, and about 50mm total length, with | the opening at the top about 8mm in diameter. | | I'm guessing it's French or German but have no experience of these things. | | Also found in the same area were several small, heavy ballsabout 12mm in | diameter which look like grape shot. Would this be the case, or could they | be musket balls perhaps from an earlier conflict? | | Thanks and best wishes, | | Tony Holkham | Researching 19th Manchesters PALS (Cpl Ernest Briggs) | | ------------------------------ | Message: 2 | Date: Mon, 7 May 2007 11:43:32 -0400 | From: "Delilah" <diamond6468@mindspring.com> | Subject: Re: [GREATWAR] Somme bullet | To: <greatwar@rootsweb.com> | Message-ID: <004b01c790be$783e8e20$6c849804@delilahs> | Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" | | Is there a way you can send to my e-mail a photo of this - the initials may | | stand for the manufacturer, the numbers may be the size of the ammo - thats | | why I would like to look at it, if possible - can you tell me in inches | what | your mm might be - is there anything stamped on the bottom of the casing - | that may tell the size | delilah | | ------------------------------ | Message: 3 | Date: Mon, 7 May 2007 20:40:27 +0100 | From: "ray parker" <rlp@shikari.fsnet.co.uk> | Subject: Re: [GREATWAR] Somme bullet | To: <greatwar@rootsweb.com> | Message-ID: <001901c790df$91657280$6d8087d9@k0w8g6> | Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" | | Re Somme Relic. | This looks like a 8mm Lebel Rifle round.
