    3. If I can dare to add to Forrest's comments: If a family at the time said that they did not want an inscription, then one can never be added. If at the time the family did not answer the request, then a family could later (and, I believe, still can) add an inscription. I suspect that only obscenities were not allowed. I must admit I have never counted to see how many letters were used, but there are some very factual inscriptions: SHOT AT DAWN was allowed, and Kingston's youngest deceased simply had his parents' names and address. 3. May I make a request to members wishing to unsubscribe? Please make sure you follow the procedure carefully in sending the word 'subscribe' to the correct address (GREATWAR-L-request@rootsweb.com). Additionally, please remember which address you used when you subscribed and use the same one to unsubscribe. If you do all this correctly and still receive the message 'You have not been removed, you are not on the list', yet you continue to receive list mail, the most likely answer is that your email provider has changed the syntax of your address. Not your fault, not the list's fault & certainly not my fault. In this case you should email me - listing all your email addresses past & present - and I will help you. PLEASE bear in mind that 'You have not been removed...' is an AUTOMATIC message. I did not compose it nor can I control it and I am not responsible for the content. Therefore messages with unpleasantly sarcastic and/or aggressive additions are deeply resented and my help will NOT be forthcoming. I am not willfully sending mail to people who do not want it and do not appreciate receiving such mail. This is of course directed at a very few people. Most people who have difficulty unsubscribing email me politely and I never mind requests for help, however simple or complex. I apologise for the tone of this message to the vast majority who understand how to conduct themselves in a civil manner. 3. I have a lot of books, magazines from the 8th AF Historical Society, I have a few that lists names and has photos, the 8th AF was the largest Heavy Bombardment in WW2 and WHARTON was the largest Air Depot, they have numbers. - either I can post the names I find, some have pictures or how ever you would want it. Let me know if this is something you would be interested in. The calendar has events that happened on certain days and some names that were given awards posthumosly. There are also stories of different things, I coul dpost thek if it would be interesting. Also since the 8th AR was in the 2nd Air Division, I have requested the names of everyone that was in the 2nd Air Division. I also have a lot of associations and reunion dates, if wanted. I also can get some histories of units from those that ceme out of Camp Fanning. I have map/list where the US Marines wre in the wars and where they landed and fought on the globe since 1775. Do you have the info on th eorganization of the 8th AF and all the units that were in the 8th. delilah evans

    3. If any kind listers are planning visits to the battlefields in Northern France, is there a chance someone might be willing to take one or more grave photographs for me? I need some photos for a non-commercial project from a number of different cemeteries. With one exception there is just one grave in each cemetery. If anybody could help with even a single photograph I would be most grateful. I have asked CWGC in France to recommend a local photographer I could pay to have these graves photographed and was basically told to get lost because I am not a relative. The photos are needed to complete my website dedicated to the Royal Field Artillery in Worcestershire. I have a picture of the headstones for all but one of the fallen in France, Flanders, Italy and the UK and want to complete the project. A number of French graves are needed to complete the job. Unfortunately (?) I now live in Tenerife and the chances of getting to France myself are now almost nil. If you have a relative who fought in the Worcestershire artillery during WW1, may I invite you to visit the tribute website at www.dennicorbett.com/241.html. You can check in the alphabetical lists if we have him listed. The website is backed up by a database detailing the almost 2500 men in the 1st/2nd South Midland Brigade (later 241 Brigade) Royal Field Artillery. If he is listed, contact me and I will let you have any information I have on him. If you know he was in the brigade and I do not have him listed, again please contact me (but be prepared to forgive me if I get excited!) There is no charge for any information I can let you have, my duties as historian for the brigade are completely voluntary. Please note that I do not hold information on "the Worcesters" meaning the infantry of the Worcestershire Regiment. This is purely an artillery project. 3. Dennis Have you tried the British War Memorial Project? http://www.britishwargraves.org.uk/ If they have the photos you are looking for there is no charge though donations are welcome. And of course they always need volunteers. Not just for overseas war graves but Britain too. I am a volunteer and find it very satisfying. I have also recieved many photos from them too of men from my home town who died in WW1. Regards Peter

    2. The 33rd Engineers was a general construction regiment assigned to the Services of Supply of the AEF in France and disbanded at Camp Grant, Illinois in July 1919. 3. My search continues for any information on my great-uncle, Joseph J. Michael from Baltimore. He was in the Army twice, the first time from 1909-12 and again during the Great War 1917-19. He was in Company F of the 33rd Engineers, and according to the Order of Battle, they left Hoboken for France, but there is no other information. As stated earlier, NARA will release WWI records only to immediate family (who are all dead). Does anyone have information on the places of service of 33rd engineers in Europe? Dos anyone have any photos of the 33rd, which might include Joseph Michael? Photos might have been taken at Fort Devens, Mass., Hoboken Port of Embarkation, England, France, or elsewhere. I would gladly pay for any copies or duplications of photos or other materials. David Crider Birmingham, AL --------------------------------- Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. 3. Sue and Forrest, You are miracle workers. Forrest, you got the right one with Miss A L Ross ( Anne Leslie Ross). She was at City Fever Hospital Edinburgh prior to serving with the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve then returned to the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh in 1917. (Later lived in EH12) Sue, The British Journal of Nursing is a goldmine. I assume that Miss A Ross who attended the investiture on 4th October is the same as Miss A L Ross who was found by Forrest I wonder if it is possible that the Miss A Ross who was Mentioned in Despatches for service on Hospital Ships is the same lady. With awards for gallantry it is possible because they would relate to separate incidents, whereas the awards in question are for devotion to duty over a period of time. Many thanks for your help. 3. Jim I haven't searched the LG for this [I want to retain the will to live], but the British Journal of Nursing has a couple of references to an Anne Ross. Firstly, she attended an Investiture at Buckingham Palace on the 4th October 1916, where she was presented with her ARRC by The King. There is also a piece about a Mention in the Despatches of Sir John Maxwell for service on Hospital Ships, again in the BJN on July 1st 1916. Both these refer to a woman who was a member of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Service Reserve. You can search for these here: http://rcnarchive.rcn.org.uk/ and I used the term 'A. Ross' to find her. If you have any trouble, drop me an email and I'll send them. You haven't said whether 'your' Anne Ross was a member of QAIMNS, or the Territorial Force Nursing Service/Civilian, and the details above might fit with your information, but The National Archives Catalogue show that there were at least three different women with the name Anne/Annie Ross who have service files - one a member of QAIMNS, and the other two TFNS - and there could be others around - civilians, British Red Cross etc., so you need to confirm you have the right candidate. But it would certainly be worth looking at the service file of the QAIMNS Reserve Member first, who seems to be the most likely candidate, and whose file reference is WO399/7209. The files are not online, and are produced as original documents at The National Archives at Kew. I am now appealing for some pointers about where I should look. I am trying to trace the award of an ARRC to Nurse Anne Ross, probably in the period 1914-1917. The London Gazette have put many decorations on the internet but not the ARRC. On the medal cards I have found a card with the notation "Nurse A Ross" and a pencil note "Hospital Ship". I had not had any previous mention of hospital ship service, and there had been a presumption that the award had been made for hospital services at Aldershot. Where do I go from here? Many thanks to all who think they might give me a clue. Jim
