    1. [GREATWAR] What did Grandpa do in WWI?
    2. Hi all- The question: "What did Grandpa do in WWI?" has become a topic of disagreement in the family. Maybe, hopefully, you all can help me find the answer to this and other questions about his service. I have some information on his service and I have his diaries from that time. However, they don't answer this question directly. Here's what I know ... He began the war as a 1st Lieutenant in the Avaition Section of the Signal Reserve Corps. (Please excuse me if I'm not getting these titles totally correct). He was in Washington, DC & New York working as a purchasing officer until sailing for France on April 2, 1918. He was discharged on Nov. 30, 1919. While in Europe he was at ASPC #2 ... What does ASPC stand for? His diary entries during the time he was in Europe are mostly like this: April 4, 1919 Lv Paris 2:30 pm via Orleans - car from Orleans to Romo (not sure if this spelling is correct). Dinner at La Ferte - St Aufin, av Romo 9:30 pm or November 26, 1918 Lv Paris 2:30 pm for Romarantin (not sure if spelling is correct) av Romo 8:00 pm How can I find out if these times of leaving and arriving would have been more in line with driving or flying at that time? He never talks about any flight training, would he have had formal flight training if had been a pilot? As a granddaughter, how can I get whatever military records might still exist? Thanks for any help you can give me. -Liz McGough

Can anyone with access to Army Lists provide any information , please? I assume that his service record, if it has survived, will be at the India Office Library. 3. Dennis He's listed in the Army Deaths Other Ranks 1914-21; twice as it happens under references A.3 371 & A.8 308 - probably the result of an administrative error. 3. I realize that my enquiry is a little outside the normal remit of this list but I'm hoping someone might know the answer to my question. I'm researching the men whose names are inscribed on the War Memorial in my village. I have discovered that one of them, Wright FREEMAN, was censused in 1891 in the Barracks in Lincoln as a "Private, Infantry". I was wondering if anyone can tell me what unit would have been stationed there in 1891. He is proving to be an interesting character: He served in WW1 as 8234 Lance Corporal Wright FREEMAN in the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and died of wounds on 10 August 1915 at Gallipoli. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. In the 1901 census he was an inmate of Dorchester Prison, in Dorset. I haven't yet tried to find out how come he ended up in there! regards, Peter Appleton Researching the men whose names are inscribed on the Skelton-in-Cleveland War Memorial

    3. Dave Try the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, if all on your list fought during the war it is highly unlikely that they all survived. The War Graves site will give you rank, number, unit, date of death, etc, then you will have more to go on. 3. To: Great War List (John Favill) Re: Manchester Regiment On my website (my grandfather served with 19th Manchesters in WW1) you will find a good list of general references to the Manchester Regiment. I don't have copies of any unless they relate specifically to the 19th, but I'm sure you should be able to track others down through the web. My web page also gives a list of other sources that have helped, and you may be able to track some of those down, too. See http://www.tonyholkham.co.uk/non_fiction_chance.htm Best wishes Tony Holkham

    3. Barry - SDITGW adds that Francis Grundy was Kia, and born & enlisted at Farnworth, Lancashire. He was killed during attacks on the village of Ovillers, where little progress had been made since the beginning of the battle on July 1st 1916. On the 10th of July the 8th LN Lancs (supported by 3rd Worcesters) were trying to flank round northwards from the Albert - Bapaume road to the rear (south-east) of the village, but were repeatedly counter-attacked and driven back.
