I have some questions for you very knowledgable people. I am researching seven soldiers from my home town who were discharged through illness during the war and died shortly after. I found the pension records of only five of them on Ancestry. One of those I couldn't find was definitely pensioned off as his obituary says so. The other was demobbed then died of pneumonia shortly after so perhaps he wasn't in receipt of a pension. Of the other five, one of the records clearly has two pages missing. There were supposed to eleven but there were only nine though parts of the missing pages could be seen in the photographs. My question is will I have to view the original records in Kew to copy these pages or will they be on the microfilm copy (or is it fiche)? Though these records are very informative, will there also be records of these men in WO 363? Finally, I have a good digital camera and was wondering if they copy well from microfilm or fiche. Regards Peter
There are any number of good books on the AEF which include material on training in France, which is where most real training took place. Information on occupation duty is harder to find. See for example The AEF and Coalition Warmaking, 1917-1918, David Trask (Kansas 1993) and Pershing and his Generals: Command and Staff in the AEF, James J. Cooke, Greenwood 1997). There are also any number of histories of the US Marine Brigade of the Second Division and its heroics at Belleau Wood. See Len's Bookshelf (_www.wfa-usa.org_ (http://www.wfa-usa.org) ) for the newest entry in this group of histories. Look under RESOURCES. There are several unit histories of the Second Division of the AEF. One is available from The Digital Book Shelf (_www.thedigitalbookshelf.us_ (http://www.thedigitalbookshelf.us) ); others will appear in a Google or other search. Are there any good books about AEF training upon arrival in France or the Occupation of the Rhine bridgehead area after the Armistice? I am specifically interested in these subjects in regard to the AEF 2nd Division. Thanks, Mitch
Just been looking at these for a family member and there is a small form, W3214, that I have never seen before. It's a receipt for an 'Armlet and Pamphlet' dated 1 12 1916 any one know what this 'Armlet' was ? iain
Hello, everyone I'm new to this forum and I wonder if any of your ancestors were in the same unit as my grandfather? I've recently obtained his military papers and so have learned a little bit more about him. His name: Robert DAVIES. He enlisted in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, in September, 1909. >From what I can decipher from his papers, he began his short military career as a gunner with the 126th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. His unit mobilized at Preston, August 6, 1914. He was injured in Ypres on November 11, 1914. Abdominal shrapnel wound and a bullet through the elbow. He was transferred to the 7th Reserve Battery and later discharged from the RFA in April 1915 after it was determined that he was physically unfit to continue service. I've posted 3 photographs of my grandfather and fellow gunners here: http://kindredspirits.rootschat.net If any of you have any information about this specific unit or it you recognize others in the photograph, I'd be very pleased to hear from you. Thanks, Ros
Hi List, Just to thank everyone who replied with regard to John Hills service in the Labour Corps.Very much appreciated. Best wishes Lou

Ivor, Many thanks for this - and the rest of your e-mail. Anything is very welcomed as it helps put something on the bare bones of this simple record. Chris
Chris I can add a little to his Labour Corps service. His number of 117718 indicates that he was one of the early members of the Corps and served, initially at least in 197 Company. I say initially as it was quite common for LC men to be moved to other companies. 197 was formed from Permanent Base men already serving in France so I think you can assume he was in this category - that is men who were medically unfit for front line service. 197 did not keep their own War Diary and there is little information about where they served. In January 1918 they were at Abancourt and in October 1918 they moved to Poperinghe. However there is very little on their duties - they were used to work on the roads and a few men were attached to the Central Purchasing Board in August 1917. Ivor
Mike I think that was my point :>) Until a year or so ago, the advanced viewer was incompatible with Firefox. I only changed to Firefox about 18 months ago, and was used to the advantages of viewing Ancestry via IE - when I switched, although some people might have found the basic viewer OK, I didn't find it a patch on the IE version. Even now, I still find Firefox slower to load the Ancestry pages, and the number of crashes increasing - this never happens with IE. Firefox is my browser of choice, but I still revert to IE for Ancestry. Hello Sue, That surprises me because I've been using Firefox for a number of years without any difficulty. I seem to recall that until about a year ago the advanced viewer was incompatible with Firefox but the basic viewer worked fine. I do think these pages failing to load are probably a browser issue however. Mike Firefox has never handled Ancestry very well - census, BMDs, everything really. Until about a year ago it wasn't possible to access some of the features, like the buttons at the top of the page that let you scroll backwards and forwards through the pages. Then there was some sort of tweaking, and it improved, but now I get quite a few pages that fail to load and just remain white, often followed by the inevitable crash. I tend to use IE all the time now. But I do believe that many of the reported 'missing pages' are the result of browser incompatibility with Ancestry. It would be interesting to know which browsers are being used when images are failing to load.
